And that's why 2/3 the way through Majors' tenure he went 0-4 against the top 25, yet people gave him the chance to recover, but people wanted Fulmer out. Why?[/QU Because Majors had to rebuild the type of program that Fulmer left behind and everyone knew this at the time!

59-22-2 in the 7 years before Majors took over, and 12 straight winning seasons. Majors first year was the first losing season in 13 years. Right, it was so bad that it had to be rebuilt.

And that 0-4 year came TEN YEARS after Majors started. IF there was rebuilding, it should've already been built, so there is no excuse for it happening, but he was allowed the chance to continue.

Yep , he left plenty of talent. So much that Kiffin had to start walk ons .

If I recall correctly, Kiffin screwed Josh McNeil by starting a Sullins at center. McNeil was a top 4 Center according to Kiper/McShay. KIFFIN ruined his pro chances. I think Kiffin screwed a lot of players chances of being good by starting the Sullins twins. The talent was there on the O-Line, which is the walk-ons you speak of.

I think McNeil's knees being trash after injury had more to do with it than anything else. Even McNeil seemed to think so...

"You think Mel would still have me there if he'd seen my MRI and surgery files?" McNeil asks. It was this reason he didn't make himself eligible for the NFL draft after his fourth season at Tennessee. Even though he'd already graduated with a degree in communication studies, McNeil knew he'd be flagged by the NFL scouts and doctors.

Once flagged, McNeil feared he'd be adrift in a world he'd never known, a world without football

A good article on Josh...

Football Worth the Pain for Josh McNeil

Happy New Year to you also VF.

You know better than that.
Majors as HC

1989 11-1 SEC Champions
1990 9-2-2 SEC Champions
1991 9-3

1992 The year Majors had his heart attach and Fulmer stabbed him in the back.

TN was 9-3
Majors is credited for 5-3
Fulmer is credited foe 4-0

Fulmer took over a very strong program.

I have never understood this statement. CPF came in and went 4-0, did the best he could and the powers that be rewarded him for it. What exactly did CPF do other than win?

P.S. Did Majors not have a heart before then?

Exactly. Fulmer may have lobbied for the position, but he wanted to be a head coach, and if he didn't get it here, he would've elsewhere at the end of the season. Simple as that.

C'mon Gramps. YOU know better than that. No proof it ever happened.

if kiffin inherited the talent that fulmer did, he would have won the SEC

LOL .... LMFAO .... Kitten started pre-season #1 and pissed it away. 1st team to be pre-season #1 and lose 6 games. The only other team that did not score more than 13 points on GT were the Blue Hose. WOW!!!!

You act like NOTHING was returning from Fulmer's last years. 1.) If Fulmer was kept, the talent would've been better because the class would've been intact. 2.) If Kiffin wasn't a dumbass/douche and didn't run off the talent, it obviously would've been there. You all keep acting like if Fulmer had stayed the talent would've been exactly like it played out, which it wouldn't have.

and by all accounts, Fulmer was the recruiter, not Johmnyboy (sic).

Fulmer was one of Johnny's boys back then.
Phil did not recruit every player signed during the Majors era.
Fulmer was a very good coach for several years but he did not walk on water.

True. It reminds me Fulmer blowing it in.the same way in 2005 when TN was ranked #3 and totally tanked.

With Fulmer we knew we would be back to competing next season. Fulmer never had back to back losing seasons. Fulmer made improvements after his 2005 season. In 2006 we went 9-4 and in 2007 we were 1st in the east and went to the SECCG.

Kitten hasn't proven he can do anything other than embarrass every team he has coached.

Shame on you as a Vol fan for even trying to compare Kitten to Fulmer.

Even worse is when some on here compare him to Urban. If the some of the "fans" praise Urban or Lame so much, go and be their fans....you will not be missed.

fulmer--better recruiter than majors, better coach then kiffin---hamilton blew the two post-fulmer hires. he should have been fired after the kiffin disaster

USC #1 had nothing to do with Spliffin. Their number one ranking is a hash pipe dream perpetuated by sportswriters that are absolutely infatuated with the "mystique" of USC. I personally don't understand it. The SEC was a conference while they were still wearing 6-shooters in the Pac-whatever. To me, USC is about as relevant as Vandy.
