Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

I think he has said Clawson was a great hire. But he was taking a shot at UTIE who said Clawson's resume was similar to Urban Meyers before Florida.

I'd argue that point. The SEC in the 1990s was really not that far from what it is today.

I think you're right, but the main difference here is the recent growth in strength of the western portion of the conference. LSU along with Southern Cal. have become the two dominate progams in the country. Auburn has been better recently than they were in the 90's also. Of course Bama has been down, but Georgia has become a contender annualy for the East, which is quite a stretch away from their horrendous run in the 90's.

The difference between Tennessee's teams in the 90's from Tennessee's teams in '01, '03, '04, and '07 are quite simply a variation of losses to LSU, Auburn, and Georgia.

I don't know about that. Terry Bowden's last year was a disaster, but you are talking about a team that made an SECCG appearance and had a separate 2 year run where they lost a total of 1 game.

Auburn's schedules were extremely weak in '93 and '94. In '93 they played 2 teams with winning seasons, and 5 teams over .500 in '94, whom they lost one game to and tied another to a 6-4 Georgia team. We did not play Auburn in either of those seasons. In '04 they played 5 teams with winning seasons, and beat all of them. Their conference winning percentage is also a fair amount higher in the 21st centry as opposed to the 90s.

(Edit): 4 teams with winning seasons in '04. They beat us twice obviously.

And the fact that the '01 team didn't win it is basicaly the mark of the turning point of Fulmer's career.

Exactly. That game couldn'tve possibly been more winnable. To this day, I remain puzzled as to how UT lost. But it certainly began a long, precipitous slide toward, as someone else pointed out, the Purdue of the South.

Well here's the deal with that game. Tennessee had plenty of oppurtunities to win it. Julian Battle was in a position to put the game away similarly to what did us in last year against LSU, but the ball hit his hands and fell out. Stallworth had a bad game as well. We put Rohan Davey in the hospital, but out of no where Matt Mauck comes in and cleans house. So many bad bounces in that game coupled with the fact that we were coming off the biggest win in 3 years against 'UF and looking ahead to a National Championship. An underrated and loaded LSU team outplayed us.

The fact that people are defending Fulamanure with the "Oh, the SEC is so tough" garbage is Exhibit 1 as to why I will never attend another road game or donate a dollar above and beyond what it takes to keep my seats as long as that oaf is the head coach. The only thing more worthless than Fulmanure is his cadre of sycophants.

Fulmanure is hands down the best spin on his name, ever. Automatic classic.

Maybe parity is making winning difficult, but isn't it the coach's job to separate his team from the rest? And if all things being equal, shouldn't UT have won at least one SEC title by now (if parity has played that much of a role)? I'm not bashing or defending Fulmer, I'm just calling this as I see it.
