Fulmer is still the best name.

Ya go figure, but how is it Fulmers fault?
Kiffen screwed us and left after running off a couple of players. Let's not forget the sanctions that came from Kiffen and his staff. Then hired Dooley who couldn't coach to begin with.

You can blame Fulmer for his loses, but that's all.
It's funny to me how when it's convenient people say he had so much talent, but couldn't win. Then they say he left us with no talent. Fulmers last year was ruff to say the least. I was mad more than a couple of times. However I never held him responsible for what happen after.

I personally blame Hamilton!!!

Because that 33-person 2007 class contained at least 25 completely useless players.

People Kiffin "ran off":
William Brimfield
Todd Campbell
B.J. Coleman
Lennon Creer
Chris Donald
Donald Langley
Tyler Maples
Ahmad Paige
Darris Sawtelle
etc.

How many of those people didn't completely suck?

This goes for pretty much everyone who advocates Fulmer's return, as I'm just trying to see where you're coming from. Out of curiosity:

From 2000-08, Tennessee under Fulmer went 76-39 (.660, which is about 8-4), with 0 SEC titles and 3 SEC East "championships." Do you want Fulmer back because you think that's good enough for Tennessee, or because you think he'd take us back to the glory days of the late '90s?

Followed by the 2008 class ranked below Ole Miss and Boston College, among others. 32 others, to be exact.

Tennessee only signed a small number of players in 2008 due to the large numbers they signed in 2007. Not to mention that fact Tennessee didn't really lose many players.

Even if you rank them by the average player rating, which takes total class numbers out of the equations, we were 27th. Right behind Maryland, Kansas and Minnesota.

I like to make the Fulmer Haters try to explain their collective hatred. It usually boils down to he should have won every game. Which could be said of every coach.
I can't imagine he would even come back. I would assume he is retired. But while he was a coach here he ran a record setting offense for Majors and set records as a head coach. Won a couple of league titles and the first BCS title. 100 more wins than losses. That resume stacks up well anywhere in the pantheon of college coaching. And it is fine with me too.
Hope the next guy can win even bigger and better than Fulmer did. And then set his sights on Neyland. That is my opinion on what is "good enough for Tennessee". Thanks for asking. :peace2:

UT's 2007 class is widely thought of as one of the top five in the nation.

If you want to judge him on one year. I can do the same.

No one here is a fortune teller, but regardless nationally it was considered the #5 recruiting class.

Alabama had the number 17 ranking class in 2007. If you swapped and Alabama had the #5 class and Fulmer had the #17 class. You wouldn't look at the players. You would want that #5 class.

I just don't understand all the hatred towards Fulmer. I said many times I will support whomever the university hires. I'm not saying hire Fulmer. I want the best coach for UT. I want to get back to winning. However Fulmer is not the enemy and we owe him respect at least.
In 50 years when people read about the Fulmer era they will be impressed. Think about it for one moment he is the #2 coach in the history of The University of Tennessee. History is hard to change and who do you think might be the next coach to reach his status.

He is a Hall of Fame coach with a NC. You can't just erase that. When were all gone and all they have are the books and a few old enough to remember the Fulmer era what do you think they will say. He will be a legend.

We all know he will NOT be our coach again. So why pick his career apart just let the man go.

I've just skimmed the past few pages of this thread, but I have lived through several coaches at UT.

Phil Fulmer had his day but he got complacent. Once Cutcliff left he was blank on what to do with the offense. He tried Randy Sanders and he busted. He brought Cutcliff back and had some success for a year or two until he left again. He then brought in the biggest bust of all Clawson. By this time the fans had their fill of Fulmer's miscues. Lousy offense's and great Chavis defense's weren't enough to save Fulmer.

Phil Fulmer was a great Tennessee coach, but only with great coordinators behind him.

I think that sums it up for most fans. I don't hate Phil, I like him and appreciate what he did for UT, heck he was great for 10 years and then autumn set in. It was time for Tennessee to go in a new direction. Hoping we get this hire right.

You beat me to it. Some of those vaunted classes ended up being busts.

The 2007 class has to be one of the most over rated classes ever.

Seek help.

I would be interested in hearing why I need help. I loved Fulmer when he was coaching and still like him. That being said, he did nothing of note from 1999-2008. "East championships" don't count. He did have 100 more wins than losses, unfortunately most of those 52 losses came in the time frame I mentioned. It seems to me you need the most help you little infant

Apparently we all don't know he won't be our coach again, hence this thread.

I would take him over Todd Graham, Dirk Keotter(sp?),Al Golden, or Strong. But if we get this far down the list we have failed anyway.

you mean Joker who's fired, or how about JL Smith at Arky, he's out too..., or Chizik at Auburn who's about to be out....then I don't think he coached against Sumlin, Pinkel and Muschamp, or Franklin I don't think he coached against them....

So why don't you just post his record against Spirrier, Saban, Miles and Richt which is what your really asking

You have changed from winning anything to now saying he won "nothing of note". Why do you keep changing the standard? As hard as you feebly try to make your point, you keep failing. Fulmer is what any young coach would aspire to be. Worked his way up from Graduate Assistant to BCS champion to Hall of Fame.
Thusly, if you endeavor to continually talk the crap you do, SEEK HELP. Quickly.

steve spurriers next win will make him the winningest coach at two programs, only other sec coach to do that is bear bryant(ky and bama)

I admit it. I'd take Fulmer over Graham or Golden as well. Those two candidates freakin' suck.

I'm not changing the standard. Nobody cares about a coach that doesn't win championships which he did not do from '99-'08. As good as Fulmer was, he'll never be in the same class as Saban, Miles, or Meyer. I would bet any young coach would rather aspire to have a similar career as one of those coaches

Then list the coaches who won the SEC east division.
Then list the coaches who won the SEC title.
Then list the coaches who have won a national title.
Fulmer is on all three.
As far as wanting to be like Miles or any other coach, maybe. But Fulmers career path is at the top in my book. Work your way up through the ranks at the school you played for, in your home state. Taking your school to the top of the mountain (a place they had not been in 50 years). Fairly boss if you ask me. Nothing wrong with Fulmers career. He would be stupid to waste any more time coaching. What else does he need? A 3rd SEC title? Second national title? 200 wins? Time to let one these other guys have a chance at it. Have a nice day sir :hi: .
