Fulmer is still the best name.

Firing Fulmer was NOT a mistake. How he was fired, when he was fired, and who he was fired by, was a mistake. I know from people who have worked under the the last three HCs that Fulmer had let the program slide in so many ways. Lots of issues beyond just wins and losses. The hiring of Hamilton was the biggest mistake. Fulmer is the alpha point on the current state of the program. The worst 5 year period of UT football since 1909 starts with Fulmer's 5-7 debacle. Saldy, the fate of the program was in the hiring decision made by Hamilton. When you think of the what ifs regarding who UT could have hired it is more than depressing.
Look at Alabama. How in the world did they end up with Mike Price, as a choice? How does LSU go 20 years with coaches like Denardo and Hallman? And keep in mind that before Bama got Saban they had already hired Rich Rod, when he had a change of heart and stayed at WV. It wasn't till then that the Bama folks ponied up the $$ to get Saban.

My honest assesment is that UT will not make a good hire. The candidates just don't seem legit. Stoops leave OU? Aint happening. Do you think Fisher will actually leave the fertile recruiting grounds of Florida? No. Doesn't appear that Patterson, or Peterson are cultural fits, and don't seem to be persuaded by big money.
UT will get out of the cellar, but the next coach will not last more than 5 years.
UT missed the right hire 5 years ago. Kiffin was wrong for so many reasons. But, the big setback was the worst possible timing, and I don't think even Hamilton hires Dooley if the timing wasn't what it was.

Maybe you are right and TN will get a good coach this time, better then Fulmer (although I doubt we will see he duplicate Fulmer's record). That said, I would guess we would get a more motivated Fulmer this time and sure I would still bet on Saban, but Fulmer can get wins like this, we know this.

But yet 23-27 in the four years after Phil are his fault? He may have left the program in a state unfavorable, but at the end of the day those 4 years are on Kiff and Dools. They were the head coaches and it fell on their shoulders to coach players up and get results. Did they?

I'll hang up and listen

Damn, I wish I would have read this a few years ago before I wrote him off.

Get out of here, Fulmer will not be our coach again.

Fulmer deserved a chance to fire Clawson and get a new OC to see if he could turn it around. It's called equity, he had earned that. I was all for firing him at the time. But unlike some, I'm not too proud to admit we would clearly be better off now had we kept him, we would.

Let's just say for instance Fulmer was never fired....and he lost EVERY SINGLE GAME for 4 straight years (2009, 10, 11, 12). 12 games a year would equal 48 games. That would give him a record of 152-100 with a NC, and would far and away be a better resume than any of the names we are hearing.

It's human freaking nature to get complacent. I'd be willing to bet he's evaluated the situation and acknowledged some of his shortcomings (Clawson). He's had time to recharge those batteries and I think he would do a fine job.

As for the name calling....PLEASE! Those calling names need to get a life. An opinion is one thing. But I've been around awhile and I know your type. Only a CHILD name calls, and I'd be willing to bet ole' Phil would backhand slap each and every one of you name calling chumps to the floor. He's done, and continues to do more for this university than 90% of us. That in itself should earn some respect.

One more thing. Majors learned from Neyland, Chavis and Fulmer learned from Majors. The foundation and principles in which this proud program were built on by Neyland have been all but an afterthought and went out the door with the dismissal of Fulmer and Chavis. That's something this Program has sorely missed, the past few years. That's the most important thing he and Chavis would bring back. And that's something you can't just buy.

Again, just an opinion. Not sure he'd be the first call I'd make, but he wouldn't be as far down my list as some of these names I'm hearing. He or Chavis.

As for the bad mouthing/name calling...you may as well just start bashing and name calling Neyland himself. In a sense it's the same thing. Fulmer is Tennessee thru and thru and will FOREVER HAVE MY LOVE AND RESPECT, whether he ever coaches again or not. Respect...something I could NEVER have for some of you name callers. I'm out......

I am 35 years old and have a wife and four kids. Because I disagree with facts that makes me 16...look Fulmer had some bad years, I think he will have the fire again...so can we set the personal stuff aside.

i do believe Fulmer would like to redeem himself but TN is not the place to do that.

This hire needs to unite the fanbase. Fulmer would not do that.

I was just trying to say in my original post that I would be ok with Phil at this point. Givin the options out there. My lists go like this.

Chavis
Cut
Fulmer

I may be old school. Yes.

It's almost like there is a newer age of fans that drive the negativity around the program. If you can win a National championship in 2 or 3 years take a hike. I'm afraid Tennessee will never see a long tenure coach again and coaches are now a dime a dozen.kinda sad

You are 100% correct.

I enjoyed some of your post in our epic thread collection. Feel like we met some good people through this forum. Jake seems like a hell of a guy.

I'm gonna miss that thread, I'm like you I'm not giving up on Gruden until the next coach is named.

Philip Fulmer is in such high demand that football powerhouses such as Kansas and Kentucky went in other directions. The guy didn't do anything his last decade here unless Cutcliffe was around.

Kansas and UK are not able to compete for titles no matter who coaches them. Fulmer has said he wanted to coach somewhere the team could compete for titles.

Alot of the same ones saying Fulmer should have been fired for hiring Clawson and the failed offense that year are the same ones who were saying Dooley should get a 4th year as long as he is willing to fire Sal and get a good DC. Funny when you think about it. Fulmer was coming off 17 wins, Dooley was coming off 10.

The guy is a true VFL, a NC winner, good record. He should be a plausible candidate for the job. He knows what UT tradition means. The more I think about it, the higher he climbs on my list.
