Fulmer is still the best name.

Hiring fulmer would make UT look like the dumbest university ever. You fire the best UT coach ever & then reach the bottom barrel again & rehire him?

Actually I think alot of the country thinks UT made a mistake. If you read other boards I see alot of other schools fans poking fun at UT with the "Ya miss Phil yet"? People make mistakes and so do universities. IMO, UT made a mistake and now they realize it. It would take alot of pride swallowing for UT to offer Fulmer the job back. If it is the best option on the table, I would expect Hart to be able to do it.

But yet 23-27 in the four years after Phil are his fault? He may have left the program in a state unfavorable, but at the end of the day those 4 years are on Kiff and Dools. They were the head coaches and it fell on their shoulders to coach players up and get results. Did they?

I'll hang up and listen
Please, don't put words in my mouth. I said firing Fulmer was NOT a mistake. Fulmer is NOT responsible for the bad hires made after his exit. He is responsible for putting UT in the position to risk such hires.

What he accomplised in the 90s cannot be argued. It also CANNOT be argued that he slipped, and slipped badly. One also can't ignore that the SEC was changing fast and Fulmer was becoming a door mat for the new generation of coaches. He was very welcoming to first year coaches in the league.
Also, there were cultural problems, discipline problems, poor hires and bad results. Fulmer left the program in worse shape than when he found it. Fulmer was given a chance to right the ship and the best he could do was Dave Clawson. Let's not forget that he had already gone 5-7 in a year where they were pre-season top 5.
The failure of Clawson doesn't excuse his hiring, and who hired him. Nor does it excuse the myriad of other issues Phil had let occur under his watch.

Viewing Fulmer through the lens of the last 4 years is distorting the reality of where the program was under Fulmer's last years. It is simply poor reasoning.

Alot of the same ones saying Fulmer should have been fired for hiring Clawson and the failed offense that year are the same ones who were saying Dooley should get a 4th year as long as he is willing to fire Sal and get a good DC. Funny when you think about it. Fulmer was coming off 17 wins, Dooley was coming off 10.

Who?

This I know to be fact. Many people lost respect for UT for firing Fulmer. Not just firing him, but the way it went down. I had a WVU fan tell me "it might be hard for you guys to get a top coach considering you way you guys did Fulmer". Then went on to say, "you guys basically took he and Chavis out back and shot them like an old horse as if they were worthless". He just might have a good point.

Thank you. I have been trying to get this to stop for 2 weeks.

The problem is when your hoping to land coaches with records of 29-14 or 34-20 or 40-45, passing on one who is available and went 152-52 and would take the job seems very silly at least to alot of people.

I know this, if we had kept Fulmer it wouldn't have been any worse than it has been in the last 4 years. Plus, we wouldn't have had the Kiffin and Dooley trainwrecks. And we would have kept some degree of stability, obviously now we have none. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, I respect him and would support him again.

no that's not true. Based on his performance, it was the right thing to do. Based on his performance, rehiring him would be a ridiculous thing to do

Are you the moderator that combined this thread I started with Fulmer is the best choice?

It's the same discussion happening all the time. The number of Fulmer threads popping up is mind-boggling. It's like no one actually remembers what happened in 05-08

Pretty pathetic of you man, 06 and 07 were a lot better than the last 4 years and 05 and 08 were better thant the last 2 years. My thread was not saying Fulmer was the best choice or he would get it...kind of ruined the discussion. Plus what I could tell more people agreed then disagreed. If you are a moderator you need to set your personal feelings aside when doing "moderator" things. I don't care if you disagree, but that pretty low.

I do not want to be offensive, but the key is Fulmer is "available". He was a great fit for UT at the time of his hiring and we all have great memories, but no one is knocking down his door at this time to hire him. Timing has much to do with success in coaching and alot of people believe his time has passed.

Never the less, if he became coach again I would support him just as I will always support my alma mater.

if you have an issue with what was done then use the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom. Don't bring them out in a thread

being better than the last few years is debatable and has nothing to Fulmer's performance that ended up getting him fired.

Your Fulmer arguments are not new. They are the same old ideas that get thrown out by people who think 98 bought him a lifetime contract. Check this thread if you don't believe me

I think most remember what happened in that time frame. What most don't remember is the two year stretch General Neyland had in 1947 and 1948. In 47' he went 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. In 48' he went 4-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Two years after that he went on to win back to back NCs.

I cared for Andy Kozar in his last days and we talked a lot of football, which wasn't that far after the Fulmer firing. Although he liked and supported Kiffin, he referred to those dark years under Neyland. He said the fans were actually protesting on Gay St. And wanted a new coach, LOL. I swear he said that. Then he went on to say how he would have never gotten to experience playing on a NC team had the power people listen to the spoiled fans. He was adament that he was behind Kiffin and felt he was a fabulous young coach. However, he should have never coached at UT because we should have shown Fulmer the loyalty he had shown us. But I'm sure Kozar wouldn't know....

Could Fulmer have taken another HC somewhere if he just wanted to coach? I think he could have without a doubt. Like alot of coaches, he has a list of things he would want in a job. He was also making a large monthly sum from UT booting him out. It's not like he needed to find work. I would love that home run hire just as much as the next guy. Is that guy on the board? With the current coaches names being mentioned, I just don't see it. Don't get me wrong I would support anyone Hart hires. Part of me thinks with where we are today, a 4-5 year deal with Fulmer(seeing that home run is not likely with where we are) where he could get us back to at least winning 8-10 games a year sets us back up to be appealing to the next guy. Once again, if Gundy, Patterson, Petersen, or Pelini want the job, I think they would be better hires. I just don't know that we are that attractive right now. Sometimes choosing to stop the bleeding is the best decision you can make.
