Fulmer is still the best name.

What proof do people have that Fulmer got lazy? Did they watch him loaf around or something? Do they have priveleged epistemic access to Fulmer's thought-life? I hear this all the time, but I don't see the evidence for it. So, there were a couple of bad recruiting classes, but how does that necessitate him becoming lazy? Fulmer is NOT the best hire now, but he would still be better than some of the names being tossed around.

This-He is alot better than some and not as good as others

I think most remember what happened in that time frame. What most don't remember is the two year stretch General Neyland had in 1947 and 1948. In 47' he went 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. In 48' he went 4-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Two years after that he went on to win back to back NCs.

I cared for Andy Kozar in his last days and we talked a lot of football, which wasn't that far after the Fulmer firing. Although he liked and supported Kiffin, he referred to those dark years under Neyland. He said the fans were actually protesting on Gay St. And wanted a new coach, LOL. I swear he said that. Then he went on to say how he would have never gotten to experience playing on a NC team had the power people listen to the spoiled fans. He was adament that he was behind Kiffin and felt he was a fabulous young coach. However, he should have never coached at UT because we should have shown Fulmer the loyalty he had shown us. But I'm sure Kozar wouldn't know....

Great post. A lot of people forget that Bear had his bad years too.

1967 8–2
1968 8–3
1969 6–5
1970 6–5

Everyone wanted him gone after that 70' season.
Then from 71' to 81' he pretty much handled everyone.

Fulmer was fired because he got lazy. Plain and simple. When he lost cutcliffe, and sanders didnt work out, he should have went out and got the best OC in the country. But instead he hired dave clawson and that was his downfall. Sanders was a bad pick and clawson was awful. I think fulmer just got lazy. He wasnt recruiting as well either.
But if we cant get gruden, and we can get some great assistants, fulmer might not be a bad option.
He at least gives his all for TN and loves tn. More than i can say for hart.

I have to disagree with that.

4 SEC Conference division titles from 2001 till 2008 and his 2007 recruiting class was ranked #5 in the Nation.

I said lazy, i think complacent is a better word.
He was preseason ranked what number 3 and ended up 5-7.
After cutcliffe left he was never the same.
Just my opinion.

And why do you assume Fulmer will win. You can spout his record all you want but his prime was over a decade ago.

Like I've said before you don't just forget how to win.

From 2001 till 2008 we were in the SEC Championship 4 times. That's competitive no matter how you look at it. 1st in the east 4 times from 01' to 08'.

Who is your choice? What ringer do you have up your sleeve that is going to win it all for us?

Tom Landry was 270-178-6 during his coaching career. He was great for his time, but when the Bill Wash spread offenses started becoming a norm he was in over his head.

His last three years he went 17-30 before he was fired. It doesnt take away the fact that he was a great coach FOR HIS TIME, but when he was fired is was obvious the game passed him by.

Phillip Fulmer will always remain part of Tn lore, but we have to be honest with ourselves. There is a reason why he is unemployed.

For those dead set against Fulmer, name your choice. Don't berate us ,and then when we ask who your choice is, not answer.

Who is y'all's choice? Strong, Jimbo, Fedora?

Yep

4 Conference division titles from 2001 to 2008 that
Meant being in the SEC championship game every other year. 2007 recruiting class ranked 5th in the nation.

Now please tell me how we fired him because he couldn't win the big game.

Who would your choice be right now that could come in here and win us a NC.

2 losing seasons in a 16 year career does not equate to termination.

There are 124 D1 college programs in America. Not ONE has offered him a job since hes been fired. Dont you think theres a reason for that?

yes. Because he is part owner in a company and making enough that he doesnt have to coach unless he wants to. He's publically stated that he wants to be around his family which includes a grandchild.

Do your research, moron

I would like to add this Fulmer quote

He is looking to establish himself at a well-established school.

"Somebody that's committed to winning championships and being the best that they can be, with a chance to compete in a conference that's nationally recognized. I'm not going to go walk into a door somewhere that you have no chance to be successful."

So that eliminates 70-80 schools then

Is it the schools fault for Fulmer handcuffing himself? The fact is Fulmer has not even been interviewed by anybody in in the last 5 years.

1) no such thing as a division "title"

2) how did that 2007 class do at UT?

We won the SEC East and earned a spot to play in the SEC Championship.

Last I remember you have to win your division in order to make it to the SEC Championship. We won the east.

And no one has hind sight.

Now who is your pick?

You guys do realize that there is a 0% chance that this will ever happen? Why waste your energy on a fantasy? The dude was fired and is still a sore spot for half of the fan base.

Fired CEOs (Head Coach if you will) usually don't get asked to come back. I think the reason is because THEY DID SOMETHING TO GET FIRED IN THE FIRST PLACE! Phil was great in his prime and gave the university a lot and we should all be thankful, but that ship has sailed. No reason to try and renovate the Titanic.

Paterson, Peterson, Shaw, Jimbo, and even though he has been mentioned yet Kyle Whittingham could do a fine job.

1. Gary Patterson .. Not coming they have already said they will match and beat any program in the nation.

2. Chris Peterson.. Great coach but I don't think he would come. Signed a 5 year contract at the beginning of the year.

3. David Shaw .. Only 2 years HC experience. I think he needs more time. A jump into the SEC would be hard for him.

4. Jimbo Fisher .. 29-10 If he stays on track his record could end up looking something like 145-50. If he made the jump into the SEC I do not believe he would keep that pace and his numbers would drop.

5. Kyle Whittingham .. His record right now 71-32. If he stays on pace he could be 142-64. Fulmer 152-52 in the SEC.
