... For the majority of you out there that say filmed lost his ability to coach over his last few years, ask yourself if you'd be happy with these records again. Grass ain't always greener fellas
2008. 5-7. ... This got him fired after 16 years of success
2007. 9-3 season (sec east champs, almost knocked off lsu who became NC)
2006. 9-3 season
2005. 6-6 season ( beat LSU in death valley and barely lost to bama 6-3)
2004. 10-2 season.. Sec championship game loss to undefeated auburn
Thats 39-21 regular season record in Fulmer "horrible" years. And 2 division championships in 5 years. And for those that say fulmer wasn't recruiting during his last few years... Here's his national rankings
2008. #21 rank
2007. #4 rank
2006. #24 rank
2005. # 1 rank
2004. # 9 rank
I always thought the odds of us gutting out a couple bad Fulmer years and then coming back...maybe he gets the fire back, finds the right OC, whatever, and having great success down the road were better than those of hiring a new coach. New coaches are a roll of the dice, no matter what anyone says. Look at OU between Switzer and Stoops, Nebraska after Osbourne, Michigan after Carr, Notre Dame after Holtz until just now, USC from Robinson until Carroll (a LONG time!).
The counter is Saban at bammer (but what about Dubose, Franchione, Price, Shula before him?). Or you could throw in the coaches from Bear to Stallings. Even UF had to go through Zook to get to Urban, and while Muschamp looks good at the moment, one bad season and he's on the hotseat.
Hitting a winner seems the exception...not the rule. Which is why I am willing to be patient with Dooley. Not saying he should be back next year, but I can at least wait until the end of the season. And if he comes back, he has one last chance. Not even the biggest Doolaid drinker could possibly think a season about par with this one would be acceptable next year. No way!
But to get back to the topic...had Fulmer beaten UCLA and Auburn in 2008, he almost certainly survives, we don't lose to Wyoming due to his firing, and we perhaps go 9-4 if we win the bowl game. On par with many of his seasons post-2001. But it got to a point where you could not defend that season any longer. A bad day for our program. :cray:
Final thing...there were many that wanted him gone in 2007. We go to the SECCG, almost win the blame thing, and people still want him gone.
Those people....were EFFING IDJUTS! And the negativity they brought to the 2008 season didn't help. Bottom line though, Fulmer didn't get it done in 2008. Which is too bad.....
