Fulmer on 14 class "Not enough linemen"

Fixed your comment for you - he wasn't that great at development either but his recruiting was not up to SEC standards and it ultimately cost him his job. Cutcliff leaving every 3 years and taking the offensive staff with him didn't do Fulmer any favors either. Overall recruiting was lower half of SEC and the recruiting of linemen
may have been in the bottom 3 of the conference imo.

But after saying all this he was the best coach we had in 60 years.:ermm:

Historically, UT has been fine signing solid OL from the state. This is one area where I think it is nearly impossible to project…with the exception of a tackle like Tiny.

In reality, we have holes all over the place, but it is much better to have two deep with SEC athletes in the skill positions than it is to have an all world O line.

It is much easier to produce a serviceable offensive line than it is to teach someone to run faster.

Disagree. A great O-line can make a mediocre back look good. A great RB with a crappy line won't do diddly squat unless you have Barry Sanders. A great O-line, D-line, and smart (not a 5 star) QB is what you need to win in this league. End of story.

At least Fulmer didn't call two of your 2012 QBs cowards, like Pat Dye did to Auburn players yesterday.

Given the fact that he is an old offensive lineman and Fulmer's relationship with Butch, my guess is that this was a little tongue and cheek as well.

This.

He should have said immediately afterwards:

Too soon?

Hey Phil, went to school when you did,so don't give me this "not enough linemen"crap when you sat on your Winchester ass the last few years at UT and drew a check. You have absolutely NO room to ***** about Butch's recruiting. At least he is doing some recruiting.

Fulmer couldn't even find two Tennessee boys named Randall Cobb or Patrick Willis because he was busy getting an extra lineman or two.

Considering Fulmer's piss poor recruiting cost him his job and is ultimately responsible for our downward spiral, he's really not in a position to criticize.

That said, he also told Clay Travis we didn't have enough linemen before we got Barnett, Blair, and Hendrix.

He's probably referring to offensive linemen, since that's all he cares about

"@Riley_Blevins: Phillip Fulmer spoke to a UT class today & was asked about Butch's recruiting class. His response: 'He doesn't have enough linemen."

Saw this tweet today. Thought it was interesting.. And might be true.

Lol we have four offensive linemen already, and may land a fifth. How many does one need?

Frankly, as this season has sadly reflected, we don't have enough of anything. I long for the days when poor old Tee Martin was waiting behind Peyton Manning, we had Lewis, Stephens and Henry, and pro players Eric Parker and David Martin were our afterthought receivers.

Who won us the national championship? You can't blame it on Fulmer

Fulmer did win the NC. He then let the program sink to an average at best team and getting worse. I do blame Fulmer 100% for letting the program go from an elite program to an irrelevant program.

Let me get this straight, "don't believe everything you read on a mb" and "twitter is gospel". I'm old. I need these lessons to keep up. So since someone tweeted that Fulmer said this, it makes it fact? I'm gonna have to look into this twitter thing. I love the idea of something that only provides truth.

Fulmer did such a great job recruiting linemen that the year after he was fired, Kiffin had to start walk on linemen. If he had done his job the state of the program would never be in this bad of shape.

i could be wrong because I'm too lazy to actually research it, but I'm pretty sure he did recruit some nice OL/DL but they jumped ship or got the boot for various reasons (or were just busts)

I know there is more, but off the top of my head, Aaron Douglas (rest his soul), and Donald Langly were a couple that he recruited but did not stay

CPF was an Offensive Lineman, that is his center of gravity.

Chavis would have said D-linemen, Cutcliffe would have said ball handlers, saban would have said secondary, Paterno would have said linebackers, dooley would have said hygiene techs, kiffen would have said booster club closers, Franklin would have said punters.

He had his chance to recruit all the lineman he wanted and blew it.

Fulmer Had 3-4 years of great Linemen recruits, then went downhill. Auburn , under Pat Dye, always brought in 8-10 BIG linemen each year. UT had Henderson Hanesworth and Overstreet on the D line, but that was about the start of the downward spiral. After that, it was JUCO every year.

Mahelona doesn't get much credit but he was great in '03 and very good in '04 after the opposing DCs game planned around him

Mapu was really good as a Soph, but not the same player when he returned from mission for his jr/sr years

Bolden was good not great. Gerald Williams took 3 yrs to get here and was good. Vlad Richard ended up on O-line

Numbers/attrition killed us on the lines in Fulmers last 3-4 years
