Fulmer Picking Up Steam/Schools looking at Fulmer?(merged)

If Fulmer had hired Loeffler and some other stud recruiters and let an OC running a simpler scheme than Clawsen (that his players could actually grasp) run the offense, he might still be coach at 60.

His recruiting fell off a cliff, and he was tired. He missed on the hire that would have brought Mallett here, and it was not because Hamilton would not give him enough money.

Fulmer kept non recruiters like Slade and Chavis on the staff for years.

BTW, Nutt missed out on Ryan Mallett the first time because Mallett knew that a good QB had no chance to shine in his run oriented offense.

He was only able to convince the Springdale kids to come by lying to them and telling them that Gus was going to be able to run a similar offense to the state record kind of offense they had in HS and that they would all have PT.

I was at the game.

However, Saban accomplished the same thing this year taking the #1 team in the nation losing to South Carolina by two touchdowns.

At least, according to GoF criteria.

Saban's lost one regular season game in the past three years. Pretty sure a NC from ten years ago doesn't buy you that kind of goodwill. If Bama wins out, they're in the title game again.

Edit: Oh yeah, according the poll, it's now the Gang of 603. Guess you'll have to change your rhetoric to GoS.

If Fulmer actually somehow gets this job, guess who he would be coaching against in his first game?

None other than Lane Kiffin. That would definitely be a fun one to watch.

Interesting

He's on the way down, obviously. He basically took the #1 team in the nation and lost to South Carolina (who lost to KY). South Carolina has no history. It took them 100 years to win a bowl game. They are the bottom, and Spurrier, as we know, is washed up.

That's certainly in the same ballpark.

Saban is on his way down? I may be jumping into this late, but if Saban is on his way down, I wish TN would give him a shot at rebounding. lol

Monte was not a recruiter either. You can afford to keep a coach or two on as non-recruiters as long as you have strong recruiters complimenting the non-recruiters. Fulmer once was a top recruiter. Once that left him, he lost his biggest advantage to being a top coach. I was a Fulmer fan and still like him but realize it was time for him to go. When he was at the top of his game, he out talented people and never was a gameday coach who could out coach the other side of the field. This was even true during the 98 season.

South Carolina is a much better team than the 96 Memphis team.

Colorado's thinking about bringing back the fossil Bill McCartney when they fire hawkins. McCartney is 70 years old! Fulmer's only in his 60s.

Many of his most talented players during his most successful time periods were brought to Knoxville by Rodney Garner.

I agree at one time Fulmer was a great recruiter as HC though. Unfortunately his whole last 3 years fell apart.

Oh,...by the way - the Clawfense got Phil fired.

no it didn't. Two losing seasons out of four and some very lopsided beatings at the hands of our biggest rivals got Fulmer fired. Dropoff in recruiting, Fulmer's lone strength absolutely necessitated the firing.

not so much. He went to Michigan because Mustain was headed to Arky.

2007? Mallett said this year he avoided Arkansas because of how run oriented Nutt was. He said Petrinos success at Louisville with passing QBs then made Arky attractive when he decided to come home.

Award the prize to dumbest post of the year. Garner was only at Tennessee for two years, covering two recruiting classes ('97 class mostly). Fulmer had been identified as a top-5 recruiter nationally dating back to 1990 and his classes as HC were consistently top-5 recruiting classes before Garner was ever even on campus. Garner was a great recruiter, but his impact on Tennessee's talent was very limited.
