Fulmer Picking Up Steam/Schools looking at Fulmer?(merged)

Fulmer lost all credibility in 2005. That was a disaster of epic proportions, and never should have happened...there are simply not enough excuses to cover the missteps in that season. That is the season that cost him his job, his recruiting hand and it is the reason he isn't coaching anywhere in college football right now.

Forget all that. Dude is a hypothetical coaching beast.

Great job. I'm sure you have copy and paste excuses available for the all the years where he fell short. And I don't buy your excuses and neither does all the top tier football teams which had openings which were not beating down his door to come coach for them.

No, they hired Kiffin and other sub -0.500 head coaches. That takes real guts......

I agree it was a disaster, but it was also a perfect storm of events largely outside the realm of coaching. Randy fell on his sword for it. It's debatable whether we were better off for that. As Chief has proven at LSU, so has Randy at KY.

There is no evidence Fulmer is truly looking for a coaching job. Tony Dungy called him to ask about the Gopher job, and they would have been ecstatic to get Fulmer.

So what you're telling me is even Kiffin could do better than Fulmer. Because check the history books, that's what happened.

He did far worse than Fulmer.

Kiffin won 7 games. Fulmer would have won 9. How did Kiffin do better exactly? Funny thing is, with all his Sophomores and Juniors, Fulmer would have had the exact same record as Kiffin in 2008 without Hambone.

This is one of the silliest arguments ever on VolNation. Let's hope Dooley doesn't do worse with his Sophomores and Juniors.

Storm implies that it occured in the natural realm...That was a man made event. However, you have hit on Fulmer's greatest strength (especially in his latter years). It was always a confluence of events outside the realm of his control that caused him to lose. Fulmers capacity for introspection makes Lane Kiffin look like Sigmund Freud.

What exactly has Randy proven? They have a losing conference record, and he has plenty of talent at skill positions.

Chief managed to chase away our best recruiters, and has yet to come up with a defensive plan to stop a running QB.

Gotta go with BPV on this one. I'll give you your due. Fulmer is the best hypothetical coach on the market.

Fulmer lost all credibility in 2005.

In reality it was 2001 when he lost the SECCG. Followed up by two beatings in the Peach Bowl (Chicken Bowl). 2005 was comming at him like a freight train and did nothing to get out of the way. CPF should have been gone before 05 and we would not be in this mess now.

If Phil wants back into coaching he will need to take a lesser job at a Conf USA, MAC type school. If he was even offered the Gopher job he should have taken it, the BCS school offers will not be comming his way very often if at all.

Nobody has come up with a plan to stop a running QB in college football without overwhelming talent superiority. When talent is close or equal, a mobile QB is always a difference maker in college football. I'm sure I don't need to recite history on this to you.

There is no doubt it became harder for TN to recruit in the 2000s. Regardless, Fulmer had us in the SECCG every three years, and, as it turns out, probably this year as well.

What I recognized was the danger of cutting loose in hopes of achieving those 1990s levels quickly. It hasn't (and won't) happen now. Given how apparent that is now, I would rather have my bowl wins, my wins over Fl, LSU, and my loss in the SECCG this year, etc. instead of hoping for jam tomorrow. If TN is playing for the SECCG, it is a successful season. If they win it, it is a GREAT season.

When someome is dumb enough to hire PF, will you please go with him and stop posting your man love?

Hypothetical high five brah on making it to the SECG game this year.

A lot different than hoping for 0.500 ...

I'm sure the titles are just right around the corner now that Hambone fired Fulmer. It's obvious. We're loaded with 1990-esque talent again. We didn't lose a game this year for anything crazy like trying to out-think the Hatter.

:bow2:

If Fulmer were still here, we would be 3-6 w/o Tyler Bray and another recruiting mistake in Josh Nunes....shut up

With Fulmer coaching this team, we'd be 2-7, staring down the barrel of a 2-10 finish.....

Not like we're doing much better now, but at least the program has some hope for the future. With Fulmer, there was no hope for our future.

I think Colorado would probably be interested if they could meet his monetary demands. With the Tennessee buyout, he could afford to take less and get a new start. I guess he might be waiting to see what happens with Clemson, though.

I doubt Colorado would meet his monetary requests. I also don't think CPF views Colorado as a big enough program in terms of how long it would take to turn the program around.

Fulmer is only biding his time until Hamilton is canned to make a play to be the new AD. From there I'm sure he'll fire Dooley and replace him with himself, thus setting us back another 20 years.

I wish he'd take another job, any job...

LSU is no Wyoming. That's for sure.

Lol no way Colorado would hire fulmer....nobody would hire fulmer, they'll probably reach out to auburns o/c malzhan

The fact that Hambone had to fire him in mid-season, else it's a bowl winning season for the Vols and Fulmer can't be fired.

He had to pull the trigger mid-season, which resulted in the Wyoming loss that very weak. Team recovered, and beat two better teams afterwards despite having to bench JC against Vandy for a -200 QB rating.

Beat Wyoming, go bowling, get JC straightened out, no Kiffin, and right now, we are probably going to Atlanta in the SECE with wins over Fl, LSU, and (probably) USCe.

For real. Based on our top notch performance against South Carolina in 2008, I'm sure Hamilton was terrified of Fulmer winning a Championship in the near future.
