Fulmer Picking Up Steam/Schools looking at Fulmer?(merged)

Did you consider that it was because of Fulmer that teams like Bama and Georgia had those bad runs in the 90's. Fulmer beat an undefeated Bama team in 96, an SEC champion Bama team in 99 (pretty soundly) and consistently recruited top prospects away from the Tide. I'm not defending his record against the Tide with Saban and 07-08 was pitiful but I think he beat up on some good Gene Stalling Bama teams which is something Major was unable to do and for that I think Tennessee fans should be greatful.

Yeah, Tennessee was the reason that Alabama and Georgia sucked. It wasn't Ray Goof or any Alabama coach's from '96-'06's fault.

This might have already been mentioned, but if Fulmer goes to Minnesota it will be as bad as when Johnny went back to Pitt after he was fired here...and it will likewise tarnish his reputation.

I'm not discounting the fact that those teams had turmoil but there still was some very good teams that Fulmer beat including Bama in 95, 96, and 99 and a 92 Georgia team under Goff that ended the season 10-2 when Fulmer was interim head coach. It was harder for Ray Goff to win with Fulmer raiding the state for talent and beating him at the start of every season. Just look at all the talent from Georgia that TN had. Goff wasn't the only reason they didn't go to Georgia.

How about something from this Century?

I think Fulmer should have been let go in 08 but I still think we can respect what he did in the 90's and shouldn't downplay the success that he had.

Many people including a blogger posted in another thread feel - "For all his successes, Fulmer’s last few years started this down cycle".

We shouldn't downplay the successes, nor should we downplay the failures.

He failed horrifically with a much easier rebuilding job at UT. He'd commit suicide after a year at Minnesota.

"Failed horrifically" at UT? So a national title, a perfect season, two SEC titles, five SEC division victories, and winning 75% of his games is now "horrific failure." This is the reason no sane coach with a resume will get near this place.

Hey Phil,

Have you found a head coaching job somewhere yet?

Get over yourself. Successful coaches don’t concern themselves with what an anonymous poster on an internet message board thinks.

(PS: All the things that you listed are nice. The bold items are all that truly matters)

No, having 2 losing seasons in 4 years and having a 1-7 record vs. our 2 main rivals is considered failure.

That was within his first 7 years. None of those in his last 10 years.

wow how quickly everyone forgets.. yeah he sucked it up last few years but he still had a great program up until then.... give the man a break

The rebuilding job was following the 2005 season. UT did not need to be rebuilt in 1993.

When thinking of Fulmer I remember the quote Nixon had before he left office

"Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain. "

Fulmer may have been somewhat responsible for the situation we find ourselves in but thanks to Fulmer we know what we should expect of our football team and what Tennessee can obtain at it's best.

Right. Thanks to Fulmer. Who is that guy they named the Stadium for? How about all of those decades with at least 2 SECC's? What about the other NC's we won?

I'd puke at the thought of watching UT play inside Fulmer Stadium.

Good post, I agree, although I think he's primarily responsible for our current situation.
