'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

The problem with Munson wasn't that he was a homer. The problem with Munson was that he was awful at describing what was going on. "AH RIGHT, HERE'S THE SNAP. WE THROW IT DOWNFIELD... AND WE GOT IT!!" And then that's it. Barely any down and distance. No description of formations. Only occasional mention of players' names. Etc. I could get in the car, turn on a Georgia game, drive for 10 minutes, get out of the car and still not know what the score was. I liked Larry Munson as a sports personality but he was terrible at play by play.

100%. Constantly saying stuff like "and then we get the ball, and we run it around right end and we're gonna be taken down a yard of the first down" means you're not very good at your play by play broadcasting job. I'm sure he was a great guy, but he sucked at what he did for a living IMO.

Only because you're on the other side of it. If John Ward had offered up a similar quote following Florida's missed FG to tie in 98, we'd be teaching kids to memorize it in schools alongside the preamble to the Constitution and Gettysburg Address.

I hate hearing that quote replayed too, but only because I'm reminded of how we blew that game after being spotted a 14-pt lead in what was otherwise an awesome season.

Have you read what is generally said about our current "Voice of the Vols" Bob Kesling lo these last 17-18 years? He, nor any other Vols announcer is given immunity by our fan base like you seem to be suggesting. And one of the primary reasons why Ward is revered is because he never did and never would stoop to get in the "broadcasting gutter" that Munson frequently inhabited. You knew Ward was a Tennessee guy through and through but he was so good, so professional that you actually appreciated his "objectivity" in how he called the game. He did it with great knowledge, great energy, great description.......and great respect for both the Vols and the opposing team.

Testify.

I'm not suggesting anything about Kesling simply based on the idea that he Tennessee's guy, and in fact, it's exactly why I picked Ward as my example instead of Bob. Ward was so revered by Tennessee fans, while Kesling is at best, tolerated by Tennessee fans.

My point was this; if Ward had uttered those words in the wake of a huge Tennessee win, our fans would think no less of him, bottom line. We wouldn't be questioning his professionalism, integrity, or bias. Right or wrong, we'd be celebrating it just like UGA fans celebrate Munson's famous (infamous) "hobnail boot" phrase.

Quite frankly, we wouldn't even be so offended by it if had followed a UGA win over Florida, Bama, or Auburn either. The reason so many Tennessee fans are perpetually wringing their hands over the phrase is because it happened in the wake of a devastating loss for us.

Agree to disagree, but I'm not suggesting everyone Tennessee-related gets a pass from our fans in the least bit. John Ward, however, would get a pass if he had done the same thing Munson did that day.

You may be right. We'll never know. I contend otherwise because had Ward done/said anything remotely along the lines of Munson's hobnail boot call, it would've been so out of character for him that fans would've been scratching their heads during a wth? moment. Jmo.

True, we'll never know. Good discussion nonetheless.

Question on GV247:

Why is everyone so confident that we land Deangelo Gibbs? I know Warrior is his cousin and he visited two weeks in a row around NSD. Has he said we were his leader or something? He literally has his pick of schools and is a consensus top 3 DB in this class. It seems as though we are almost taking him for granted.

Callahan's response:

Gibbs never has publicly named Tennessee his leader, but I do think the Vols are one of the favorites to land him, if not the slight leader at this point. Like you said, though, a lot of people probably are taking for granted that Tennessee can land him, just as they did with Warrior and others. Fans tend to do that sort of thing, although there are few givens in recruiting. It's going to be a battle for Gibbs, no doubt. Georgia and a few others are right in there, too. But Gibbs and Warrior always expressed some interest in attending the same school before Warrior signed with the Vols, and I do think that's at least a factor Gibbs will consider. He always has liked Tennessee quite a bit, too.

Gibbs has been coming to UT games since he was a kid with his uncle Dale Carter. He said as much during one of his visits.

I'm not worried about him at all. I think he and Tee Higgins are the surest bets in this class.

I was driving in the Northeast one time and listened to the first half of a Georgia game. It was the only game I could find on the radio! I knew it was Georgia when I heard Munson. But I never found out who they were playing. All he said was we and they.

Their radio team still says we and they.

Tee Higgins is not a sure bet at all.

Yep, I've got my eye on that one.

Decommits, and everyone is still picking dandelions.

We may land him yet, but Rodgers and Hunter in his ear, combined with Clemson poised to have a very strong year (us too) will keep me nervous here.

Yes, I agree. I think "No sirree" is about as "low" as we could expect from him, and that is not unprofessional at all. He was the consummate professional and no one will ever come close to him in my eyes. I still get goose bumps when I hear "Your national champion is clad in Big Orange!"

I noticed on the rivals site about an hour ago it said Gibbs gives GA the nod. Does anyone know what that means? Did he commit or just say that GA is leading?

Comparing him to Mecole is a little much. Mecole was a whole other level of attention seeking.

On top of that, we have seen a whole lot of that this class and I think it is a good thing here is why:

A lot of the top prospects do this. They seek attention, but they also are weighing their options. These guys are so talented, they want to make sure their choice ends up being a wise investment, while also getting a ton of upvotes/likes/views on social media.

That said, this just means that we are in on a lot more of the elite recruits than we have been in the past.
