'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

Yep, I've got my eye on that one.

Decommits, and everyone is still picking dandelions.

We may land him yet, but Rodgers and Hunter in his ear, combined with Clemson poised to have a very strong year (us too) will keep me nervous here.

They are in his ear big time

I've said it before, I'm firmly in the "concerned UGA is about to be a huge problem" camp.

It won't take long to find out. That team is plenty talented, and obviously has no problem recruiting

I'm skeptical, especially this year. True freshman QB, first time ever coach. Not a recipe for success in the SEC

We haven't heard anything out of Orange Venom in a while have we? Any word from him on the Gibbs situation.

Oh, I know Eason will have some problems, but he may prove to be an awesome QB, as his ranking suggests. We will see.

Whether UGA contends for the East or not this year, the on the field coaching is what you need to keep your eye on.

It's funny, for years, posters say, "LOL, I hope they keep Richt forever. That program is stale. Fulmer 2.0, LOL".

They make a change, "Good luck replacing a guy with 9+ wins every year."

Then, we mock the coaching change, when they got exactly who they wanted (we didn't do that with Dooley or Butch), built a strong staff, killing on the recruiting trail.

I don't let my fandom cloud my judgment, and this could be Bama east... or not.

I agree. If they win 9 plus this year then they'll be our biggest competitors in the east.

Recruiting has never been a problem at UGA.

I just remember in all of Those periscope videos right before signing day, Gibbs seemed like he was already commited. He seemed more Vol than warrior from the videos.I think that when it is said and done, he will be a vol.

I pretty much feel the same way. Granted, they have enough talent on campus to be a very dangerous team, but short of Chubb coming back better than ever I'm not sure I see them doing much better than 9-3

Lol. What are you so scared off already?

Kirby Smart is nothing to be afraid of. Just look at his face.

You can tell alot about a man simply by looking into his eyes. Smart has soft eyes. He's too soft to succeed.

I apologize to my fellow posters for quoting this one, but I have to ask D4H if you have read A LOT of books about a person's psyche related to soft eyes. For that matter, how does one know if someone's eyes are soft?

I never said anything about Kirby being a great coach..but he is really getting on my nerves recruiting. I would really rather be competing with Richt for these guys right now. They seem to be buying his bullcrap right now. The best thing we can hope for, is for him to really crap the bed this year.

Recruiting has never been a problem at UGA.

Georgia's OL and DL depth, as well as their QB play in 2014 and 2015; suggest Georgia has not recruited well in some critical areas. In addition, the weight of the OL in 2015 was at the bottom of the SEC...as I recall it was next to last. Finally, several of Georgia's highly touted DB recruits from previous classes were booted off the team and are playing for other programs like Auburn and Louisville. Georgia just dismissed a four star DE from the 2015 signing class for a third marijuana use offense. WR recruiting hasn't been all that great either.

DL recruiting improved a lot in 2015 and 2016. OL recruiting looks like it will be much improved with Pittman, but it will take a couple of classes to get the quality depth and get the kids coached up for SEC play. The 2017 DB class in Georgia is really deep and Georgia is looking good there; and out of state targets like Jacoby Stevens would only strengthen it. QB play should be respectable starting in 2017 with Eason and Fromm. Of course getting Lawrence would likely solidify that position for another two or three years. The RB position will be thin in 2017 if Sony and Chubb go to the NFL and Georgia doesn't sign two quality backs in 2017.

Bottom line is Georgia's depth on the OL and DL may be an issue this year. They have some talented starters, but quality depth is suspect. Kirby is used to the way things are at Bama, where if a 4* or 5* starter goes down, you plug in another 4* or 5*.

A lot of realistic Georgia fans are thinking the same thing...9-3. I would be happy with that, especially if Eason gets some meaningful snaps and Chubb returns to form.

Richt getting canned was sooooo funny huh? Who's laughing now?

I don't think anybody outside of Athens really wanted Richt to leave.

But Richt was a great recruiter. Smart is recruiting on the 'new coach brings new hope' hype right now.. But it won't matter if Smart is just as good a recruiter as Richt unless he proves to be a better motivator and game-day coach than Richt. And that remains to be seen.

I agree with this - my husband is a dawg and his best friend is a letterman from the 80s. He (friend) said Smart is reconnecting with ex-players (evidently Richt neglected them) and the players seem to have a new fire...they've always had strong talent so we'll see soon enough. I'm enjoying bragging rights a lot - want to keep them for a long long time!

I keep hearing this kid is ours to lose.

Unless Nigel has a bad experience during his first year for some reason. Which, I can't see happening. I think he's the most talented true frosh we're gonna have on the roster.

But anyway, regarding the UT-UGA recruiting battle...

We need a satellite camp in Atlanta. I admire Butch for not wanting to take himself away from the program, but the region is too important for our recruiting to ignore.

With an impressive in-state class for 2017, I think it's pretty darn important to lock these kids up, because I expect the Dawgs to improve over the next couple of years, and the amount of talent we poach out of GA to decrease.

That's not necessarily a death knell for our program if we dominate the mid-state and continue to show strong in the Charlotte and Hampton Roads/VA Beach areas.

More than one ex-UGA player has mentioned they felt ignored while Richt was the coach. Champ Bailey said last year that Pruitt was the first UGA coach to approach him with a genuine interest in getting his input on DB play. Your Husband is correct in saying that Smart is making it a point to reconnect with ex-players.

Beyond that, Kirby is getting much more support from the UGAAD...i.e more resources for off field assistants and recruiting. There is also the new in door practice facility that is scheduled to be completed by January 2017; which should help recruiting. At minimum competing programs won't be able to use it to negative recruit against Georgia...as Pruitt said he and other coaches were doing when he was at Bama and FSU.

I think UGA under Kirby is at least 3 years away from being in the discussion for one of the four playoff spots. Just not enough quality depth right now on the OL and DL.

It's probably going to be a Tennessee-UGA battle to the end. Nigel is his cousin but his best friend is Breon Dixon who is a 2017 UGA commit. Dixon, Gibbs, Jamyest Williams and Tony Gray; all transferred to Grayson HS so they could play together. All four are UGA targets.
