Top40 prospect Deangelo Gibbs (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) has mentioned several times before to Dawgs247 that while he has not eliminated any programs, the lure of the SEC might be too much to overcome in the end. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound defensive back has been tied to Tennessee for some time, with his cousin Nigel Warrior signing with the Vols back in February.
Two weeks ago, Georgia added a transfer from Tulsa in defensive back JR Reed.
"Of course, everyone knows by now, that J.R. Reed is my cousin," Gibbs said. "He is a great athlete, player, student, and person. I know he is going to go in and work hard."
Gibbs immediately noted that he is not locked into any school.
"How is he going to affect me going to Georgia? I have a cousin at Tennessee as well, so you never know," said Gibbs. "At the same time, both of schools might not be my first choice. I have other schools who are recruiting me very hard, so my options are still wide open."
The top-ranked prospect in the Peach State admitted that he has a strong relationship with the Reed family.
"We are really close," Gibbs said. "JR knows the game really well and he works very hard to get the job done. I congratulated him on the great opportunity for him and his family at Georgia. Jake is like my second dad. I work out with them every summer."
Gibbs has been putting in extra work this summer to add enough credits to graduate early. That could result in the process accelerating somewhat.
"It will have to come soon," Gibbs said. "I have to narrow down my top schools real soon because I do not have as much time as other guys. I do not have an exact date or timeframe, but maybe during my season."
Some have speculated that because of his size, Gibbs could end up playing somewhere other than cornerback in college.
"Only the coaches can decide whether I play cornerback or safety - that is up to the coaches," Gibbs said. "I am up for whatever because, at the end of the day, I just want to get on the field."
One thing Gibbs has noticed is how well the Bulldogs' coaching staff has done on the recruiting trails since coming on board.
"Georgia is getting a lot of top recruits - they are getting everybody," Gibbs said. "They are trying to build a dynasty over there, so I know what they are doing. Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker are great recruiters, great coaches, and great men."
