'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

For the last couple of years everyone has been talking about the 2017 class being "epic". Tennessee has a lot of in state talent this year and our first two commits were a 5* QB and a 5*WR. So for most fans the excitement level was through the roof.

Now both of those guys are committed to Clemson, as well as a highly ranked TN RB and Tee Martins son. Gibbs is looking questionable, as well as elite in state guys like Trey Smith and Jacoby. And now we find out TL won't be coming here next year either.

So fans are kinda bummed. And you can't really blame them if you ask me.

Its almost as if we don't have a national title contending team already on campus? Anybody who is down right now is a fool. This is the greatest time to be a vol fan in over a decade.

2016 is about what happens on the field. If Butch can't win with this squad, it wouldn't matter how well our 2017 class was going. He would show us he doesn't have what it takes to put UT back on top.

We find out in 2016 if Butch is just a great recruiter or a great coach. He has everything he needs this year to win. A team with tons of talent. A team with more experience than anybody in the SEC. An easy schedule out of conference schedule. A down east. And so on.

This is the best opportunity Tennessee might ever have to win the SEC. And if you win the SEC, you should win the national title.

Power 5 coaches all got together and did not invite Butch. All agreed on their negative Tennessee recruiting talking points and are using them well.:)

Butch is getting Butch Slapped.

I agree except for using the phrase "should win" in the last sentence. "Should compete" is more appropriate. With the playoff format, having to win two more games against some of the nation's best teams makes that task more difficult. Just being the SEC champ doesn't mean you should automatically win the national championship, but you certainly should compete for it.

This year, more than any other, I don't think CBJ's direct coaching is going to be the reason the Vols succeed or not. This year you have both an OC (DeBord) and a DC (Shoop) who will be running the show during the games. CBJ knows more about the offensive side of the equation but DeBord will be running that show again with a bunch of guys familiar with his system. And Shoop? Nobody tells that guy how to run his defense.

Solid post, and exactly how I feel. We started out with such promise in this class, like you said, and it has kind of devolved from there. So many people were promising an "epic" class in 2017 and told us to look past 2016 because 2017 was were the real stars (no pun intended) would be gathered. 2016 was supposed to just be a "depth" class.

Now, I know that "win and recruiting solves it self" can be true, and that Butch has done a great scrambling at the last second to get some elite talent on NSD or just before, but it would be nice to not have to deal with that. It just doesn't seem to have much momentum at the moment. So yeah, I think fans are just a little disconcerted at the moment. But it can get better.

In terms of average star ratings for a class the 16 class was the best one since the great Fulmer classes.

I don't understand how anybody could be upset with the 2016 class. Vols signed one of the best WR and secondary classes in the nation, got the best QB in the nation, got one of the best DE's in the nation, and many other great players. Only reason it wasn't a top 10 class is because they took 2 project OT's in Niehaus and Tatum instead of Dickerson. Apparently Butch likes their upside better. That class will be huge in the future with guys like JG, Byrd, Callaway, Warrior and others

I am in no way upset with the 2016 class. I love so many players in that group and look forward to seeing Byrd, Warrior, JG, and Kongbo play. I think some people are just a little frazzled over the slower start to the 2017 recruiting cycle and the decrease in momentum.

We can definitely get all the momentum back, it's just with it being the offseason people have only recruiting on their mind.

Cherry pick much?

So, the fact that you selected sites that do not agree with Scout's rating means they are right and Scout is wrong?

Personally, I don't care what any of the sites rated our class. As far as I am concerned, we filled needs and are going to be able to redshirt many of the 2016 signees, which is a step forward for the program.
