'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

I've always had Gibbs at the top of my 2017 must get list. Kid is a gamer. I felt great about our chances, until recently.

Tennessee had set up a spot to take Gibbs cousin Reed as a transfer from Tulsa. This would have absolutely sealed the deal for us to get Gibbs. For some reason Gibbs himself stepped in, stopped the UT thing, and had Reed introduced to the UGA staff. Reed ended up going to UGA instead of Tennessee. I'd love for that to be easily explained away. IMO, it can't be.

WOW, if this info is actually true, then we might as well right Gibbs off and shut down this thread, he gon.... Why hasn't this been brought up before, this is HUGE! So the kid pushed us aside and brokered a deal for his cousin to GA... speaks volumes.. again, he gon.

I personally don't think Gibbs is as good a prospect as the recruiting services but it's a bad look for Butch if we lose him.

He's a guy who looked all Vol in February.

If we lose him, it would mean there's a really potent argument being made against Butch that is very effective right now with recruits.

I've been trying to figure out for the past few months where the narrative came from that Gibbs was Tenn's to lose. I've watched interviews he's given and read comments that he's made going back to his sophomore season and I can't find where he says that Tenn is in the lead. I can't find anything that would lead me to believe he has any team in the lead. If anything, he is very coy in what he says about his recruitment. I can't tell where he's going.

Maybe someone on here can go back and check who started the "Gibbs is all Vol" narrative. As near as I can tell it has something to do with Warrior being his cousin and committing to Tenn in 2016. There was one instance where a reporter stuck a mic in his face after one of his games in 2015, and asked him what he thought about Warrior saying they were a package deal. He was clearly caught off guard and basically said that was definitely a possibility, but then added he was going to make his own decision and go where he believed was best for him. Don't know if that's where it started, or if some just automatically assumed he was going to follow Warrior to Tenn.

I'm always fascinated by how some of these recruiting narratives take on a life of their own.

It was quoted in an article posted about his cousin Reed choosing UGA maybe a week or so ago.

I understand Reed is his cousin, but in no way has he been as close to him growing up as he has to Nigel. Everything that I have read indicates that Gibbs and Nigel see each other as brothers. Is it possible that Gibbs introduced him to UGA because he thought he would have more of an opportunity to succeed? Just spitballing here.

This has been discussed on here ad nauseam. He's actually very close to JR Reed. He's spent the last 5 or 6 summers in Dallas training with JR and JR's dad. Gibbs' parents refer to it as a summer tradition. Gibbs also recently said that Jake Reed is like his second father.

Once again you are reading into it what you want. The article said he mentioned to the UGA staff they needed to take a look at Reed. Nowhere was it stated he stopped him from going to UT. It sounded to me like he was using his influence to get a family member a bit more exposure and maybe a choice of another good school.

Exposure? Butch was ready to take him. He had a spot in Knoxville. Why involve UGA at all? Nonsense.

You may know more about it than I do because all I know is what I've read on here. There have been articles and other things put out about the situation, and according to everything I've read, Gibbs didn't step into anything and Reed choosing UGA was all about Reed's father feeling the UGA staff could better prepare him for the NFL. While this is still not good for UT, it's not as bad as your quote makes it seem.

That said, it does sound like if Gibbs chose today, it would be UGA. But if he lets the season play out and we perform as good as hoped, I think we good.

Reed would seriously struggle for playing time at UT as a transfer. Our depth of really solid players in the defensive backfield could be the best in SEC except for Bama. If he was my best friend I would have him weigh that decision against just being on the same team. That's my thinking on this.

Awwww, that's sweet.

Here is the quote from the article that changed my feeling on Gibbs choosing us.

It also appears that Gibbs helped get the ball rolling on Reed's transfer to Georgia.

"Georgia has thanked me," Gibbs said. "They looked at his film, and I kind of introduced him. I told them he was pretty good and a dog. I told them it runs in the blood! They saw his film and they realized he was a dog. They offered him a scholarship."

Why introduce him? Tennessee was set to take him. IMO no good.

Maybe he wanted more choices? Maybe he didn't like UT? Maybe he saw more opportunity for playing time? Maybe is a powerful word. If you try hard enough you can make it fit any argument you want to make.

Reed would have never seen the field here.

Maybe DeAngelo has a secret hate for his cousin Reed? Maybe He sees him as the enemy so he encouraged him to go to a rival school? Sure, we can go with that if it helps.

The narrative that Gibbs' was Tennessee's to lose came from one of VolNation's must trusted insiders on the board. I believe it was GFW, who has a great track record on recruiting info and correctly reading a situation. I'm not sure where he gets his info, but it seems that he is very close to the program in some form.

Now, that all came back a few months ago before the 2016 class was even inked. Things change as you know, so Gibbs' might now be completely unsure of where he wants to go. But as far as my memory serves, GFW has claimed time and time over that Gibbs' was all Vol according to sources. But, like I said....we haven't heard from him in awhile and that could be entirely different now.
