'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

I agree Volinpowell- something is definately going on. Maybe Butch is thinking working himself to death here just isn't worth the stress. I remember being caught way off guard by Larry's comments but maybe now it is making sense. Others have caught on to that and are either recruiting against us with questions about Butchs future or there is some truth to maybe Butch eyeing leaving at some point. Hopefully now I think the last thing we need is another coaching change right now but good grief none of this makes any legitimate sense no matter how many spins people are making of it.

What the hell changed here with Gibbs from January to now? Was he not here with players acting pretty comfortable and happy - looked to be a future VOL for sure. Then out of the blue Georgia comes Zooming in, his cousin chooses them over us, and now it looks like we are suddenly on the outside looking in. Kirby must be one hell of a recruiter- kind of wishing we had that now. I thought Butch could recruit but for whatever reason, not this year. Elite players are going anywhere else but Tennessee. I get Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson having such success with their championships and championship appearances- but GA??? What the hell have they won of substance LATELY? Nothing. Nothing. And Nothing. I hope their season is a complete disaster or we are in for a mess dealing with Kirby year in and year out.

Maybe nothing changed. As a rule, most of these recruits enjoy themselves on their visits, so there's no..."there-there". I've followed Gibbs' recruitment as close as anyone, and I have yet to hear or read a public comment from him definitively naming a leader. Any talk that Gibbs is favoring one school over another isn't coming from him. The kid has played his recruitment straight down the middle as well as any recruit I can remember.

Yeah, Gibbs is the #1 player in the state of GA and UGA's new HC is a pretty good recruiter. It's really that simple.

Why does there have to be a conspiracy?

Bit of a slippery slope-- besides the Smith potential, look at all the top players in our state, and Butch is supposedly a pretty good recruiter as well, yet they are all jumping ship .... :detective:

Stevens never considered us and isn't from Tennessee. Rogers was never coming here (Daddy issues). We didn't pursue Richardson hard.

So, there's Higgins. I wonder if every school that loses a recruiting battle with 1 in-state kid gets this kind of persecution from their fan bases.

Clemson has the same number of GA recruits as TN recruits as a side note. **** happens.

Who in state did Butch really go after besides Higgins and the OL who's committed to Oregon? If Smith and Chandler go elsewhere I'll dust off my tin foil hat and go to the meetings.

Some just want to go to school and move away from their hometown...Whatever the reason.. move on

I'm betting that Gibbs and his cousin Reed going to UGA has more to do with the NFL than anything. Smart and Mel Tucker are both DB coaches with NFL experience. In fact, UGA has about 4 guys with NFL experience, whereas we have 1 (Debord).

I'm not as aware of any NFL background for Clemson's staff but they have recent success to point to.

As far as the Jones rumors are concerned, I'd like to know what Larry's heard about the situation lately since UT finally settled the lawsuit and is sending Cheek and perhaps even Hart packing. These steps could go a long way toward mending the types of things LWS was referring to.

The NFL is more money and better everything..., Having said that..It would be shocking to see him leave or even getting a sniff at the NFL

Just curious if he is still teaching that don't look for the ball, but read the receivers eyes technique? It drove us crazy. Killed by the back shoulder throw. Had he changed his ways?

I am not a football expert, but a properly executed back shoulder throw is very difficult to defend no matter what you teach.

I am thinking that between the lawsuit (that yes now is over) and the comments from Larry (iirc) that Butch wanted to get to NFL, has scared people off. Maybe the lawsuit is made Butch want to go to NFL quicker. I am at the point something is going on here.
Not sure that the opportunity to play even for a year or two for an NFL caliber coach would hurt recruiting.

Persecution is a bit melodramatic, don't you think?

Wow, so now that we still only have a chance for Trey Smith/Chandler we are all making excuses for all the instate talent going elsewhere-- Butch didn't really want them or recruit them hard!? Really? What happened to Butch putting up a wall around the state? We have the best crop of talent in years in the state and now that we are not in it for most (for whatever reason) folks are making excuses I guess to make them feel better and now say "Butch didn't really want them, and didn't really go after them".... wow....delusional... why can't people just except that maybe the staff didn't do a great job, maybe dropped the ball, or something else came into play by us not getting top tier instate talent besides "he didn't really want them or go after them"... Ron you are always the Man on here and I respect everyone's opinion, but come on... and now Kristy has an excuse for every single kid we seem to be missing on right down to "Daddy issues"... incredible. It's also funny those that post a lot on here can act so defensive if someone else has a different opinion or jokingly calls them out... I'm sorry, I forgot that since you have so many posts, you can never be wrong or even questioned... In one post you say Gibbs is the #1 player and Kirby's a pretty good recruiter so its that simple... yet you won't concede that Butch is also a good recruiter and we are missing out on top talent, but that is only because they have good excuses and Butch didn't want them and apparently recruiting in GA is different than recruiting in TN.... SMH.... GFW was right, this board has gotten out of control this summer.

I'm sure the majority of upper level college coaches harbor NFL aspirations. If Chip Kelly can get not one, but two shots at the NFL following a string of success, there's no reason to think Butch Jones couldn't have a shot following a similar string of success. The good thing for Vol fans is that we would also be the beneficiaries of said string of success.

I was just wondering if recent developments in regards to UT wouldn't cause Jones to be a bit more selective as opposed to jumping on the first opportunity he gets.

If we miss, we didn't want them. If they were never coming here, we didn't want them. If they committed elsewhere early on, we didn't push for them because we didn't want them. We are taking all the 3* recruits to try and keep things fair for the rest of the SEC.

Last I checked we have 5 kids from TN on the commit list and should add at least two more. 7 instate is a pretty good number considering the instate talent. Sure we missed on a couple, it happens. Win some lose some, that's recruiting. We'll still end up top 10. And after we win the East we'll end up top 5.

And then next summer when we miss on a big target we can have this same argument again. Happens every year!

No, I don't.

Persecution definition:
1. "hostility and ill-treatment. . ."
2. "persistent annoyance or harassment."

Except the coaches don't experience any of that. At all. To think that is laughable.

And besides, I'd say maybe 25 percent of Vol fans, if that, follow recruiting close enough to care.

Sounds like a made up percentage. :)
