'18 GA LB JJ Peterson (Tennessee signee)

I don’t know who’s football IQ is higher. I do think Sapp is a better athlete for sure. McDowell was failed by the S&C program. Dude should’ve been developed much better but seemed like everything was off.

Just like pretty much every other recruit in the Butch Jones era he looked his best freshman year.

I’m not as familiar with 3-4 OLBs...I know you have the one side that’s similar to a 4-3 WDE but plays more in space...i see Taylor, Allen and maybe Smith fitting this role as you said...isn’t the other side similar to a hybrid safety/OLB?

A true 3-4 is kind of like a 5-2 but you're ends stand up up and can drop into zones. Typically both sides are around 6'3"-6'6" and 230-260 lbs

Edit: Obviously there are exceptions but you want great pass rushers that wont get bullied in the run game

Bates has been 230 lbs for the last 3 seasons and Sapp is 220 lbs. I’d roll with your assessments of their athleticism. I don’t think either fit Pruitt’s ideals in a linebacker...if he has a choice.

Yea, LBs like JJ Peterson are built for a 3-4 like I hope Pruitt has Sherrer install. I would say it's a safe assumption to say that we don't currently have many options at LB that fit the style Pruitt will be going for to anchor our D. I guess Kongbo could be a pass rushing OLB, but besides a few, I think Sherrer and Pruitt will hafta reshape most of our D thru recruiting. I miss AJ Johnson and Curt Maggitt. Those 2 would thrive in this D. JJ Peterson kinda reminds me of those 2.

He doesn’t look the part at all athletically when he’s been out there. Looks Jumper level athletically when I’ve seen him in games.

That's the same thing my eyes told me also. He might've tested good at the camp, but these last few yrs on the field in Orange has shown a different outcome. I know he suffered some injuries too, but still. Just with what we currently have on the roster (no recruits in this upcoming class) - who do u see as our best options at LB with this staff? I expect a few players to be moved to different positions. Possibly Kongbo, maybe Kyle Phillips, maybe Darrell Taylor?

Taylor fits more than Kongbo. They won’t go fully to the 3-4 first year. Pruitt has ran the flex/Jack a lot in the past like at FSU.

So JJ Peterson at 6’2” 210 is built for a 3-4 but Sapp at 6’2” 220 and Bates at 6’3” 230 aren’t?

Not sure I follow that logic

Kongbo is about 280. He will be a DE.

OLB-Smith
OLB-Taylor
DE-Kongbo
DT-McKenzie
DE-Tuttle

ILB-Bituli
ILB-Kirkland (he's back right?)

I actually like our front 7. We just lack depth at LB.

FSU had elite 4-3 talent and performance...there was a benefit to transitioning slowly. We’ve had two seasons of anything but acceptable. Why wait?

Agreed. If they're going to a 3-4 here, there's no point in waiting to install it.

Pruitt has run multiple for years at Bama and FSU. He knows what he has to work with. Even though the base is 3-4, Bama runs the 4-3 at times. Probably see Tuttle or equivalent move inside when they do.

3-4 DEs are very similar to 4-3 DT’s in responsibilities. You see Belichick’s Pats do similar machinations.

Well by the eye test on measurables, 210lbs would seem to possibly have a little more quickness in edge rushing, while still having the quickness to keep up with TEs in pass coverage, and still at 6'2 Peterson won't be giving up much in length. Again - just eye tests without on field college production. Just comparing measurables and comments made by coaches about Peterson and his explosive potential.
