'24 GA LB Sammy Brown (Clemson commit)

To be fair, Duke won 9 games last year and return 17 starters including Riley Leonard who quietly had 33 TDs and 3500 total yards last year. Anyone who thought Duke would be an easy win for Clemson simply wasn't paying attention.

A lot of people had Duke as a dark horse to win the ACC this year by the way.
This just further supports recruiting rankings not being everything.

Has Sammy re-opened his recruitment yet? I’ll give his official announcement that it’s been re-opened till probably Thursday or Friday.

Duke will likely be back in the gutter once Leonard leaves. You can build a good team with 3 and 4 stars if you develop well. But when your top guys leave, you generally don't have the talent to replace them and you fall back to mediocrity. And it usually takes another full recruiting cycle before you are back to the top level you were at, assuming you are still developing players well.

TCU will be experiencing that this year. Just like Cincinnati experienced that after their playoff year.

I didn't say Duke was some national powerhouse program now. My comments were more for those who think that recruiting site rankings are basically all that matters. Leonard didn't exactly play lights out last night. He had a big game rushing, but was right at 50% completion passing. They also had enough mistakes happen, to where they could have laid down and quit. Instead, they just kept coming and hitting Clemson in the mouth. Talent and depth matter, especially the later you get into a season. But, any given Saturday(or Monday in this case) it doesn't all come down to paper champions.

This is why recruiting rankings aren't everything. Clemson has 5* players all over the field. They went out and got an OC that was supposed to give them an offense similar to ours. They just got manhandled by a team full of developed and experienced 3* players with a coach that has built it around culture.
Dabo reminds me of mid 2000's Fulmer. Past his prime and his staff doesn't have enough new ideas and are stuck in their ways. They still get good talent, but the talent composites or blue chip ratio don't tell the whole story anymore. Florida State has 6 or 7 impact transfer portal additions that are way more valuable than some of the 4 and 5 star young players that Clemson has on its roster.

Also, Clemson's talent is probably massively overrated by the recruiting services, kind of like Texas. They have name recognition and are probably given a Bama or UGA style bump when Clemson offers, that is probably what was done in the 2013-2018 time period when Clemson was a true power. But now, Clemson's offensive line looked awful and their skill position players are not that good either. If they didn't have Shipley, they might be a 5-7 or 6-6 team. They will probably go 9-3 or 8-4 this year (due to the weak ACC), but are just an average ACC school at this point, like Louisville or Miami.

Dabo's success has mostly been predicated on the downfall of UT football. His success was mostly built around players that should have been in Knoxville. Especially QBs. Kiffin sent Tajh Boyd packing from his UT commitment when he was hired. Only for Boyd to engineer the rise of Dabo and Clemson football. Then we all know about Trevor Lawrence.. Dabo also had been pretty stable in his coaching staff until recently. All those things have changed.

Clemson looked slow on defense. From my limited knowledge, what I saw was Clemson players that were unable to erase mistakes by being better faster athletes.

That is true. Clemson was able to get players from East TN, North Carolina, and Virginia that are natural recruiting areas for TN, especially when there aren't any traditional local powers that you have to beat out, unlike GA, AL, LA, and FL.

Players like James Pearce, Daevin Hobbs, Jaylen Wright, Nathan Leacock, Cam Seldon, Braylon Staley, and Peyton Lewis might have been the type of players that would have gone to Clemson during the Butch and Pruitt eras. But now we are getting the most of the best players from the Carolinas and Virginia.

Agreed but Jaylen Wright actually committed when Pruitt was still coach. Heupel was able to keep him once he took the job.

Wright was a diamond in the rough. He was an under sized speedster who has turned into an NFL caliber running back imo.
He was 5’11 190 pounds as a high schooler, hardly undersized. His dilemma was his senior HS season was cancelled due to covid. He was one of the top 2 fastest guys in the country in the 55m dash that indoor track season

Who says recruiting rankings are everything?

Recruiting is your ticket to the dance. Still have to coach, and show up and play.

Not every team that recruits well will be in the hunt for a National Title. Some will bust.
But no team that recruits poorly will be in the hunt for a National Title. It’s not repeatable.

Depends on how you define “poorly.” If a school can consistently recruit among the top 15 classes, develop, scheme, and create a great culture, NCs are attainable.

Top 15 isn’t “poor”, but it’s bottom of the barrel of what is feasible.

How many times has simply Top 15 won the NC in the last 25 years?

Maybe once? All others, 24 of 25 recruited very very well.

Typically need to be in the top 10ish range for quality depth, and/or nail your evaluations on underrated guys. Most importantly, is addressing needs. The portal helps so you don’t have to rely strictly on recruiting rankings. That’s what FSU has done. Recruited well and got some high impact guys out of the portal. Think we’ll continue to do the same.

You need to consistently be inside the top 10. Or have an uber awesome QB like Cam Newton.
