Ive seen where people say Butch told Lawrence he wasn't a good fit for UT. I wonder how true that is i cant imagine any coach telling a player of his caliber he's not a good fit.
I would rather have that dude in your avatar back for two years over 1 year of Butch. Not saying it's rational, but that's how I feel. That's not what happened.
Lawrence was at a QB camp (I think Elite 11) and a bunch of them were hanging out. Lawrence got the exact same text from Butch at the exact same time as the other QBs saying something like "You're the number 1 QB on our board".
It was all ******** that they all saw through.
Tennessee absolutely focused on Emory Jones. He was at the top of their board and was within days of committing to Tennessee when Ohio State offered. Then they moved on to Justin Fields when he was still a relative unknown 3 star. They never recruited Lawrence that hard and thought Jones was the better fit for the offense. Likewise, Lawrence thought the offense was a bad fit for him and wasn't that fond of Butch and his staff. I don't think there's any doubt that if Pruitt and Chaney were at UT Lawrence's junior year that he would've been an early UT commit and Tee Higgins and Amari Rodgers would've been Vols. This is my guess too. I seriously doubt they didn't want Lawrence badly.
Also, Tennessee never really focused on Emory Jones. Justin Fields was in play for awhile. Tennessee led at one point.

I like Fulmer. I'm glad Fulmer is now in the job he was made for. But it all started with him and specifically the decline in program discipline. He didn't hold coaches accountable. He didn't hold players accountable.By the time Botch got here the program had already been run down by the Lane fiasco and 3 years of Dooley.

Dooley and Jones both tried and failed to fix it... neither was the one to actually break it.
You just can not cover up the downfall of the program in the last three years under Fulmer. Losing to Vandy in 2005 with twice the talent showed just what kind of effort he was putting forth. I think he also had the number 3 recruiting class that year and still had another losing season in 2008. That is on the coach. From what I can gather, the problem was administration, not Fulmer. The leadership was a major problem starting in the early 2000's and it lasted until, ironically, Fulmer took over as AD. There's a new president now, new chancellor and new AD. I don't want to make excuses for any of the last 3 coaches, but they weren't given the kind of support they needed... doesn't excuse a lot of the stuff they did though. There are a bunch of accounts out there that shine a really bad light on Butch... as in, this is not a good person. (I don't know him so I don't know if that's true)
You may be right on Fulmer but I find it hard to believe they forced him to allow players to get away with the stuff they did. I'd be surprised if he tried to fire coaches and was told no.From what I can gather, the problem was administration, not Fulmer.
