He signed BUNCHES of 5* players who busted or else had inflated ratings. UT's last "5* QB signee" was James Banks... who was never better than a decent WR. There were actually 5 5* players in that class. Only Gerald Riggs came anywhere close to playing like it. His last "great" class was 2007. It also had 5 5* players. Eric Berry... could have been the first 6*. But do you remember the others? Brent Vinson, Kenny "Spotted Ape" O'Neal, Ben Martin, and Chris Donald. Remember that Chris Donald couldn't even start for Chattanooga.Fulmer did sign some legitimate "great" classes.
Al Wilson, Leonard Little, Cosey Coleman, Peyton Manning, Donte Stalworth, Peerless Price, Westmoreland, John Henderson, Haynesworth, Nash. Joey Kent, Darwin Walker, Mahalona. Not even sure if ratings were around then but these dudes were all factors among many others. Great classes do not only consist of 5 stars. There have been a lot of great players and Fulmer deserves some credit for that during the late 80s and 90s. Let's be honest some 5 stars don't have work ethic. It is a much different game when people are as talented naturally as you are or even better. He signed BUNCHES of 5* players who busted or else had inflated ratings. You can go down the history of his recruiting classes. FAR more of this 5* players busted than became great.

I'm not sure when the recruiting sites became popular or recruiting rankings became almost a separate competition unto itself. But Rivals only keeps their archive back to 2002. Fulmer and staff were better at finding talent before 2000 IMO. Probably a lot better. A couple of those guys are interesting though like Al Wilson. He would probably be a 3* today. I believe he was originally recruited as a safety.
Some 5* do it to themselves. They don't work or have some other issue. But the bigger issue IMO was that Fulmer demonstrated he knew and could sign talent. So much like Saban and a few others now... when he said a kid was an elite talent then Rivals et al believed it. And "on the hoof" the guys I mentioned looked like it. Brent Vinson was as good of an athlete as UT has ever signed. Kenny O'Neal had absolutely blazing speed. A lot of Fulmer's better players didn't come in as 5* with all the glitter. That 2002 class that had four 5* busts also had 4* like Harrell, Gaither, Haralson, Kirkland, Hannon, Allen, Wade, and Wilson.... then a pretty good 3* named Marvin Mitchell.
So to pull this all the way back to my original point... I hope that Heupel is better at seeing talent and intangibles at a better rate than Fulmer when it comes to the 5* types of guys. I hope he soon earns the respect of the recruiting sites for his ability to see talent regardless of stars.
Al Wilson was highly rated and listed on Emfingers Top 300…one of the precursors to the Egghead Virgins we know as recruiting services. Notre Dame finished second for him and (like us) recruited him as a linebacker. Would have been a high 4 star at worst.Mahalona?

Recruiting rankings have gotten a lot better over the years. Not that there aren’t still busts..but it’s been less frequent. Especially at skill positions. Camps, 7 vs 7, analytics, sparq scores, etc have made it a lot easier to identify the cream of the crop as opposed to watching a lot of guys high school tape and trying to pick the best ones.Really not sure why this isn't getting more conversation. A 5* DL to go with a 5* QB and potentially a 5* WR (or two) would make this class epic.
(Especially if these 5* players are more legit than Fulmer got in some of his "great" classes)
I agree but every class has busts. Some kids you can encourage to work, others are just lazy. But yeah I hope Heupel can see talent.Mahalona?

And some never seem to excel at the mental aspects of the game, or develop leadership skills. How does one handle adversity? I'm not sure any star system takes any of that into account, as important as it is to a player becoming great.I agree but every class has busts.
