Paul Johnson gets more out of less talent than any coach around! In an option offense you don't need as many highly ranked linemen,running backs,quarterbacks or recievers. The fly in the ointment is defenses aren't great a lot of the time.
Recruiting isn't the be all end all. Coaching and player development are still big components of the game.
Bill Snyder is an obvious example.
Great mystery how some guys succeed without the benefit of highly ranked recruiting classes while those consistently in the top 10 find a way to underachieve. If I had the answer I would bottle it. Why does Gary Patterson win...or the old guy at K State? I would say keeping key players 4 years and a ton of redshirts has a lot to do with it...and having great staffs. Look at the job Johnson did at Navy...that should tell you something.
Oregon is also another team that doesn't necessarily rely on big time players. Over the last 5 years, their class has averaged being ranked #18 in the country. They recruit California and Texas players that get overlooked and end up being the fastest humans on Earth
