GA Tech recruiting rankings

Paul Johnskn was the coach at Georgia Southern when I was there. He is an amazing coach and his scheme is very effective with marginal players. It works great so long as the score is close. When they get behind, & have to start throwing the ball, that's when it's difficult for them.

Tom Osborne won championships at Neb. with less stars also.

He didn't start winning CHAMPIONSHIPS until he landed the Lawrence Phillips and Tommy Fraziers for a few years...before that, an Osborne team was the one you beat for a national championship. Like Georgia Tech did in the 91 Citrus Bowl.

Paul Johnson gets more out of less talent than any coach around! In an option offense you don't need as many highly ranked linemen, running backs, quarterbacks or recievers. The fly in the ointment is defenses aren't great a lot of the time.

Not sure on that part being true.

Weren't GT and its fans about ready to fire him at the start of the season?

If that GT QB was a 2 or 3 star there is something drastically wrong with the rating system.

He's like Joe Hamilton was in the late 90s,everybody recruited them as defensive backs. GT gave them both a chance to play quarterback. Thomas was a 4 star defensive back but probably a 2 star quarterback.

George O'Leary says otherwise.

He had a pretty talented squad in the late 90s. GT still had the Management major. Look at Chan Gailey who hovered around 6-6 except for the 2006 team with Calvin Johnson which went 9-5.

So.....are you even going to be bothered to watch or....

Sure, I'll watch. Just being realistic. UT is beat up and had 3 top WRs out. The O-line problems aren't going to be magically fixed. Dobbs regressed for 2nd year in a row. This team just isn't all that good. But they'll get there.

Recruiting isn't the be all end all. Coaching and player development are still big components of the game.

Bill Snyder is an obvious example.

Exactly why I don't want to hear anymore excuses from this coaching staff about "youth". Our O line should be outstanding in run and pass blocking or make a change at O line coach. We've got the same stars (3 and 4) up and down our OL as most SEC lines. Time for the O line coach to put up next year and dominate or remove yourself.

Oregon is also another team that doesn't necessarily rely on big time players. Over the last 5 years, their class has averaged being ranked #18 in the country. They recruit California and Texas players that get overlooked and end up being the fastest humans on Earth

Great mystery how some guys succeed without the benefit of highly ranked recruiting classes while those consistently in the top 10 find a way to underachieve. If I had the answer I would bottle it. Why does Gary Patterson win...or the old guy at K State? I would say keeping key players 4 years and a ton of redshirts has a lot to do with it...and having great staffs. Look at the job Johnson did at Navy...that should tell you something.

Rankings are not very important, those staffs and coaches you mentioned above have their own ranking system. For instance, 247 may have had Georgia tech's qb as a 2* but Georgia tech had as a 4 star. Point is be accurate with your evaluations and get the kids that fit your system. There's no future in star gazing.

Because both teams are options teams. When you use your qb in the running game, you improve your numbers.
