'19 GA WR Jerrod Means (Pitt signee)

in his tweet, he was using terrence cody as an example of a 3 star kid being a foundation for saban's success at alabama.

anyone remember what terrence cody did to us in '09?
that's got nothing to do with their evaluation and developmental skills, which is what he was talking about. 3* kid that they got to the NFL.

it's relevant to that conversation.

no one here likes what he did in 09 in that game, but had nothing to do with the conversation.

exactly. they took a 3-star, developed him, and he single-handedly (literally) crushed his rival's dreams on oct 4, 2009.

he's saying they're going to do the same thing here.

Def agree with you on the bolded part. As as I said, I'm real excited about this kid. And if we hit on another WR still on the board, then this kid has the athleticism to move over to defense too, if needed. A true ATH that can be molded.
I like the guy and I can’t wait to see this kid show out when he gets here but from his hudl highlights he won’t be playing defense in the sec. he doesn’t really look aggressive on the defensive side of the ball

We literally havent see a kid play a down for the Vols yet & people who have probably never played, evaluated or studied film of the game of football are writing off someone one of the best recruiters in the country wanted. What a pathetic existence.
I haven’t seen him play a down. I am just negative with the whole football program. I really don’t know why other than we’ve sucked for ten years and just finished the year out with two schallackings at the hands of Mizzou and Vandy. I am supposed to be happy with Lovejoys 2nd best receiver to go along with the SEC’s 13th best QB.

Pretty sad when the fans of a school that you committed to don't like you.
Luckily the worst fans on here are a small percentage of the great Tennessee fan base. Come next fall the majority of us will be cheering him on while some people on here will still be complaining that we didnt get every 5* in the country. Some people are just miserable SOBs.

I don't hate this pick up, so don't take this as hating on Means. but he is an 82, all our other 3*s are 86s. he is not nationally ranked, all our others are. even at his position he is 216, all our other players are at worst number 68 at their position. This is a huge step in difference in rating between just saying all 3* are equal.

also those other 3* have been ours for a while, People were expecting a major surprise, or at least 4 star on one site. instead what we got was our lowest rated recruit by a large margin.

I think its fair for people to be disappointed. No fault of Means, I think the backlash against Means is just collateral damage.

I understand where you are coming from. Honestly speaking you don't know much about the kid except a rating that was put on him. Where did the kid camp. Did he even do the things necessary for a rating. Some things might prohibit kids from being able to travel around.
Again, the major surprise or 4* was started by people who were quoting other people and got people into a frenzy. This kid is just that, a kid. Think if this would have been your kid. Your pride and joy. Families have feeling bro. These type of things give the University a bad name. This stuff travels like wild fire. People like to talk about Tennessee's beloved fan base. Well, there are 2 sides to it. I give some credit. They hope for the best and wish for the best but when the deal is done they accept it and walk away. I can tell you this. If that were my child and my wife read some of this stuff she would still be crying. This stuff spreads through whole neighborhoods.
You may have wanted someone else but it's over. Accept it and that the staff thought enough of the kid to take him. THEY DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE THIS KID. THE KID WAS A TAKE PERIOD. HE CAN BE PROUD OF THAT. COACH JOHNSON KNOWS TALENT AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK. The kid is at no fault but lots of fault lays at the door of some adults on this board. Consider this, a lot of us would have loved to had some other D or O lineman ect but they decided not to come.

Recruits read this stuff and don't be surprised if some are turned off by it. Opposing coaches can use the material against us. As i said people love to think Volnation is the best fan base in the world. A lot of the reactions of people can and does tarnish that perception.

I get why you are negative a lot of times. But I honestly can see how much you love the Vols even when you are full blown negavol. These jerks today are completely ridiculous. I don't understand the complete kid bashing. I am picturing a kid who can't sleep the night before the biggest day of his life. Gets the call he is is actually going to be able to sign a D1 scholarship and gets to sign his name to be a Tennessee Volunteer. I see a kid's parents crying because all their years of sacrifice paid off and their kid is going to have their school paid for. I really didnt realize how positive I was. I do get negative when we suck in a game. And I got negative when Eboigbe, Ellis and Anderson went for the other guys. My daughter told me to shut up and quit following it if I couldn't handle losing some recruits 😂 I really do love a good underdog. I feel that is what our team is now.

Sounds like you raised a good girl.

Danny is either one of two things: (1) lying (because there is no way the “player personnel” staff don’t have a handle on recruiting rankings, even if they don’t factor them they would still be looking just out of curiosity) or (2) he’s not doing his job, because part of it should be to evaluate the other 200 players at WR that someone else (rivals) has given you a lead on.

While I’m happy with the signing and am on board with anyone this staff thinks can help us, I’m not buying Danny’s “oh we had no idea he was ranked so low, they are all suckers” routine. He’s doing a little damage control on what could be perceived as an average or below average day (I don’t perceive it that way, but some do, and I’m sure he’s heard those rumblings).

JMO.
They saw the kid in camp. If he was good enough, they would not have to look at 200 more players from a recruiting service. They obviously liked Haselwood the most then the others they were going after. If they didn't think this kid was good enough they would not have used the scholarship on Early Signing Day when they have about 6 weeks to look for more WRs.

I don't get this at all. If what we are being told is correct, this kid is a big, fast, physical guy. Who doesn't want that type of talent? We are already better off at WR than any other position on the field. If this was a 255 pound, 5'11" O lineman or a QB with offers from UC Berkeley and Coastal Carolina only, I could understand it, but why over this guy? WR is one of the most common positions in each class and some great ones legitimately go unnoticed. Why is it so hard to just sit back and see what happens, and trust that maybe we have a good, solid player here, rather than complain incessantly? If the kid is that size and legit runs a 4.43, put him on the field, get him the ball.

In his highlights, he's either on defense or lining up in the backfield. Maybe they just didn't have anyone to pass him the ball? Maybe that's the reason for the low ranking? To me, he looks raw, but with his size and speed, he could definitely be coached up.

Could be. Part of what kept Roman Harrison under the radar was that he was an OLB playing Nose because he was the biggest guy they had.
