'19 GA WR Jerrod Means (Pitt signee)

I understand where you are coming from. Honestly speaking you don't know much about the kid except a rating that was put on him. Where did the kid camp. Did he even do the things necessary for a rating. Some things might prohibit kids from being able to travel around.
Again, the major surprise or 4* was started by people who were quoting other people and got people into a frenzy. This kid is just that, a kid. Think if this would have been your kid. Your pride and joy. Families have feeling bro. These type of things give the University a bad name. This stuff travels like wild fire. People like to talk about Tennessee's beloved fan base. Well, there are 2 sides to it. I give some credit. They hope for the best and wish for the best but when the deal is done they accept it and walk away. I can tell you this. If that were my child and my wife read some of this stuff she would still be crying. This stuff spreads through whole neighborhoods.
You may have wanted someone else but it's over. Accept it and that the staff thought enough of the kid to take him. THEY DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE THIS KID. THE KID WAS A TAKE PERIOD. HE CAN BE PROUD OF THAT. COACH JOHNSON KNOWS TALENT AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK. The kid is at no fault but lots of fault lays at the door of some adults on this board. Consider this, a lot of us would have loved to had some other D or O lineman ect but they decided not to come.

Recruits read this stuff and don't be surprised if some are turned off by it. Opposing coaches can use the material against us. As i said people love to think Volnation is the best fan base in the world. A lot of the reactions of people can and does tarnish that perception.
1. you are attacking the wrong guy. I started that post saying I didn't have a problem with him.
2. every fan website has the level of derision you are ascribing as a uniquely VN on Means thing.
3. you completely missed the whole point of what I posting. I was saying its a valid point for people to not like this. not that I agreed with that view point. people have the reasons for not liking it, people have their reasons for liking it. neither is inherently wrong.
4. you can't have the most passionate fan base and please everyone. even after wins our fan base finds stuff to be miserable about. its part of it, us having different opinions and wanting the base is what drives us into a frenzy to support the team. you can't remove the negative without dulling the overall sense of fan base. in fact I would argue our "toxic nature" has saved us. See Schiano.
5. This isn't the first time VN has hated on a recruit/signee, it won't be the last. It hasn't killed us yet. This is a business. Just like we can't take every player that wants to be at UT, we are going to hurt feelings. I guarantee taking Means over Little Johnny E.TN hurt some feelings there. this is a big boy game.

6 3* players showing for this class and guys wanted to rip on this kid because some posters get carried away and have people believing we whiffed on so many 4 and 5 star players without trying to be realistic at all. Then when the rubber meets the road they disappear or lay low. I don't care who your screen name is.

Not all did that though. Some pushed back. But many insiders tried to shut them down. When the board went haywire as the first of ESD came and went and they saw it was mostly hype they can't come in now and put a plug in for the kid.

As I said we now have as of today 6 3* players showing for the 2019 class. Who is ripping on 3* Elijah Simmons who I love as a player among the other highly thought of 3* recruits. What happened to their 4 or 5* replacements. I still think some of those guys need to come in on this guys thread and make it right. They get a mob started then this is the type of thing that happens. Thankfully there are some serious and realistic minds out there still.

They can call out the stinky attitude of some of our players but theirs are even worse and then shows up in a players threads....GO VOLS !!!!!!

Felt bad for him, when I saw that he had signed and immediately checked him out....Didn't care about his stats only the Evaluations by Coach+Staff.

Bottom line: If Coach+Staff says he is in then that's all I need, they are doing their jobs....

Those that don't think he is good enough, need to understand that they need to be part of the solution vs being a problem. Trust & Support the Coach's decision and the Team....or move lead and follow...

How tone-deaf is this Stiff guy using Mount Cody as an example of their evaluation prowess?
Someone brought up how we weren’t gonna compete with bama and Uga recruiting these types of players. He pointed out how Mt Cody was low ranked and was a foundation for that defense

Color me skeptical. A 6’2 210 lb wr that runs 4.4 and nobody wanted him? Yeah....not buying the 4.4 40. This kid is a major reach.
You mean like Adam Thielen? Or how about Allen Robinson? Or how about Mike Evans? Maybe Devante Adams? Maybe Demaryius Thomas?

Anyways you get the point....

Idk whats better, seeing all these negative evaluations based on stars alone, or D4H evaluations calling everyone a future HoF

I don't hate this pick up, so don't take this as hating on Means. but he is an 82, all our other 3*s are 86s. he is not nationally ranked, all our others are. even at his position he is 216, all our other players are at worst number 68 at their position. This is a huge step in difference in rating between just saying all 3* are equal.

also those other 3* have been ours for a while, People were expecting a major surprise, or at least 4 star on one site. instead what we got was our lowest rated recruit by a large margin.

I think its fair for people to be disappointed. No fault of Means, I think the backlash against Means is just collateral damage.

If you are disappointed then this is your fault for believing whoever stated we were confident that we had a 4* or 5* coming and when it didn't happen....The Coach went to who he felt would fill the need and overlooked some in the process because he knew that they may not be headed here..... So we have had expectations based on posters with inside information stating the 4* was more than likely a Vol....he didn't sign...

Then fans started looking at this kid and stating their unknowing opinions about him and questioning the signing.....

Hate for those that do....but this is a Coach's decision that knows how to evaluate players and has been doing so for several years. Coach's Evaluation is > than board posters Opinion.....

Just because he wasn't at the top of the board doesn't mean they don't believe he will contribute.
I never implied otherwise.

I just see a little hypocrisy in posting on twitter about star chasing when our staff really wanted and never could gain much traction with a bunch of 4* and 5* guys. If we'd never courted Payton or Haselwood, then I'd get it.

I wonder if they took him yesterday to avoid what happened to them last year with Jordan Young who flipped to FSU... You wait long enough and someone else is gonna come knocking when their first choice goes elsewhere.
SIAP, but this is what Jayson Swain said this morning on his show. Him or Austin Price, I don't remember which now. But they said it's very likely this is what they were trying to do.

Don’t think it’s similar. Jordan Young literally had no offers and played on a hidden GA team. Once we offered, FSU and others investigated and offered.

Means played 6A ball down in GA. Had other offers already - albeit mediocre ones. We offered in June, six months ago.

Not trying to discredit Means or the staffs decisions to take him. Just pointing out how I don’t see the parallels to JY last year.

Yeah, I didn't say I agreed necessarily, just that that's what I heard on radio today. I do like Means, but I don't think it's comparable necessarily to Young.

How is that hypocrisy?

It's not the "meh" responses that are embarrassing. It's the usually "we suck", "this kid sucks", "our recruiting sucks", and the implied "I know more about a high school kid's potential than the coaches do" kind of responses that are the problem.

Brent said this kid has camped multiple times for Pruitt

Why is there a discrepancy between his measurables/talent and his interest level from top notch programs? It is a question worth asking.

With regard to Pruitt’s ability to recruit, time will tell. Hopefully, his evaluations are much better than Butch Jones’s. Player development also plays a huge roll. Glad Fitz is staying on board.

Go try to find his film. Not easily accessible. Which makes it hard to get offers from any staff that isn't digging under every rock. Very few actual do

Good point. I guess that makes sense. In that case, this kid was done a terrible injustice by not having someone available to get his tape out. Hopefully, he has a long productive career for us.

bama had the #3 recruiting class in the nation that year.

also, it's not like this stiff guy (whoever he is) was even tagged in that persons tweet. stiff went out of his way to show this person up. the mount cody game was probably the last time we were even competitive against bama and he's gonna use that as an example of being able to develop players?

*shrug* whatever. its a bad look imo.
