Game Changer Coach at UF

Alvin Kamara is one of the best RBs in the NFL. So why wasn't he more productive in college? Could it be **gasp** that poor coaching held him back?

There are a litany of elite NFL players who didn't have the greatest stats in college but turned out to be great NFL players. Or maybe they only had 1 great year in college after not getting much playing time/not playing well their first few years. That doesn't mean other coaches made them more talented. It just means other coaches were better at utilizing their skill sets.

Kyler Murrey was pretty bad at Texas A&M, he then transfers to Oklahoma and wins the Heisman and gets drafted 1st overall. So it's not about "making those players". It's about putting your elite talent players in a position to best utilize their elite skillsets. That's what good coaches do.
It also goes the other way. Tebow fricking killed it in college, got bounced from NFL. Manziel, another Heisman to not find success in the NFL.

I think everyone can agree on the Alvin Kamara mismanagement. That isn’t up for debate. We know who Butch Jones is. But Kyler Murray is a little different argument imo. Notice he was horrible in the SEC, which is the closest thing in college to the NFL. He goes to the Big 12 that plays no defense but can’t get over the hump in the playoff against Alabama. What have you noticed with Murray’s first couple of seasons in the NFL? He hasn’t gotten it done. Same exact player as he was in college. Good, not great. He isn’t “that guy” like Joe Burrow is. The only reason I started this debate was because everyone jumped on the Joe Brady train even though he wasn’t even the OC at LSU. One year and everyone thinks he’s some wonder boy coach because he had some of the most explosive offensive players of all time on that roster. He failed at his first attempt in the NFL. Maybe it wasn’t the best situation but you know what? Joe Brady chose to go into that situation. That’s on him and he’s going to have to prove that he’s as great as everyone thinks he is.

That's the point. Players get mishandled all the time. No one is saying Brady "made those players." But he did get everything out of them that they were capable of though. Because it's quite clear the OC before Brady didn't know how to utilize them. Literally the only difference in 2018 and 2019 for the LSU offense was Joe Brady.

Also, Kyler Murray won Rookie of the year 2 years ago. And this year he was the MVP front runner for much of the season before he got hurt, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Yup. UGA did have a great defense, but was it any better than some of the Bama defenses over the last 14 years or so? I don't think so. I actually think the Clemson defense a few years ago was just as talented. They had multiple 1st round picks too and the beat the brakes off a very talented Bama team.

But certainly, the 2019 LSU has got to be one of the best teams of all time. Insane how much talent they had on that team.

Careful. There is a small but fierce band of Tennessee and Florida fans on the boards who are for some oddball reason uga apologists. They react quickly and harshly to any criticism of uga, and will even degrade their own school to do so.

Darnedest thing I ever saw.

Joe Brady wasn’t even the play caller in 2019. He was the passing game coordinator. They don’t call the plays. And what did Murray do in the playoffs? Don’t blame it on him being hurt because that was the case last year too. Sorry but he doesn’t get a pass. He’s not “that guy”.

<Sigh>

Q. How do you two decide how the calls will be made during the flow of a game?
STEVE ENSMINGER: We talked about it before the game. I tell him, I know what my strengths are and I know what my weaknesses are. Joe is better with our compact packages. Joe is better at our empty package than I am. So I tell him, we talk about it before the game, Look, when I want to go empty, be ready. If it's third and whatever, and I have a call, I make it. If not, I tell him. He has it all highlighted. I'm like, Take it.

Not "that guy" but would have been the MVP front runner if not for injury.... Lol ok.

And FYI, Peyton sucked in the playoffs for like 10 years.

Peyton didn’t suck for 10 years in the playoffs. 2003 won his 1st of 5 MVPs and took the Colts to the AFC Championship.

And would’ve could’ve should’ve…Staying available for your team is part of it. Murray can’t stay healthy. Maybe he needs to get better?

And? He’s asking for input. That’s what good coaches do. Sounds like Brady was just his assistant. How did Brady fair whenever he got his shot to run an offense? Sitting at home waiting for a second chance.

All I know is Joe Brady royally failed in his first shot at being an OC. How great is he if Burrow is already one of the best QBs in the league? Burrow made Brady. Like I stated before, you will never convince me that Brady was responsible for Burrow’s success. He’s doing fine without Brady.

I've already posted demonstrable evidence of Joe Brady's impact on the LSU offense between 2018 and 2019, but feel free to keep trying to pretend that Ensminger didn't literally say that he had Joe Brady calling plays.

Jfc...you can hate on Brady all you want, but there's literally no denying that he improved LSU's offense, called plays in situations that Ensminger by his own words wasn't strong in, and got more out of Joe Burrow than previous coaches.

His inability to fix a broken Carolina Panthers, has zero bearing in what he did prior to taking that position.

What’s that? Joe Burrow is going to the Super Bowl in his first full season without your precious Joe Brady. Yeah Brady sure did make Joe Burrow lol

Because what Joe Brady does in January of 22' has some sort of retroactive effect on what happened in 2019. 2018, 2017?

I bet you thought Alabama was dumb for hiring Saban because he couldn't succeed in the NFL at Miami, didn't you?

No I think you’re dumb for continuing to think Joe Brady is a great coach. Joe Burrow is proving he doesn’t need a great coach. The Bengals were a 2 win team before he got there and now he’s taking that franchise to the Super Bowl for the first time in like 33 years. The dude is just special and he’s a winner. Stop spewing stuff about Joe Brady and give up already. Burrow was going to be great either way. 2018 was his first time starting in college and if you look at his last 4 games of that season he started gaining confidence and he carried it right over into 2019. He developed chemistry with his receivers and exploded into something we have never seen. Why do you think he and Chase have such a great connection? Let me guess, Joe Brady 😂

I didn’t think Alabama was dumb. Just didn’t expect for them to go on a dynastic run like they have. Nobody saw that coming. If anyone says they saw Saban winning 6 national championships in an 11 year period then they’re lying.

Lol, leaving out an entire season aren't you? That's not disingenuous or anything.

What was the Bengals record in 2020, and who was there QB for the majority of that season?

Yeah and Burrow got his knee shredded because of that horrible OL. Dude tore his ACL, MCL, PCL, and meniscus because they suck. They still are horrible. He was the most sacked QB in the league this year and yet he overcame that. Who wins a playoff game getting sacked 9 times? That guy does. Nice try though.

A+ for the mental gymnastics, how many games did Burrow play in before getting injured that season?

Please, cherry pick some more to try and substantiate your myopic view of football.

He threw for at least 300 yards in 5 out of his 10 games. Threw 13 TDs to 5 INTs. He was sacked at least 3 times in 6 out of the 10 games. Had one game where he was sacked 8 times and another sacked 7 times. Pretty impressive throwing behind that atrocity of an OL.

And what was the Bengals' final record?

If you want to attribute the entirety of the success of the 2021 season to Burrow, then you can't absolve him of the failure of the 2020 season, when his injury didn't occur until November 22nd of that year.

What part of the worst OL in the league do you not understand? How about this: let me strap you down on the train tracks and see how you fair. That’s basically what he’s been dealing with ever since he stepped on the field for the Bengals. He’s figured out how to work around it. He’s still getting ran over by the train but luckily he hasn’t gotten injured again.

It’s clear you are just upset that Joe Burrow has made your Joe Brady argument out to be a fool.
