NBB's quixotic request does point out an irony, that while broadcasting bandwidth has produced more games being shown, it's at a lower level of elucidation.

I think many of us would love to understand at a deeper level what is happening within the game, and how it has evolved since we were players.

But maybe not enough of us, and certainly not enough from that highly prized demographic who parts with their money and personal data quickly and impulsively. I guess for the powers-that-be we're too wise to waste time on making smarter.

this is why I jumped on the announcers day one...we learn about their vacations, what restaurants to go to and everything else,,,BUT,,,what's going on in the game. Who made the pass, who shot the shot, who got subbed,,,if we weren't watching the game we'd have no idea what/why/how things happened

These announcers cold be taking that time to show knowledge, like Hubie Brown did in his day

A lot of coaches these days request that they do not break down plays anymore. Especially on the telecaster. You don’t ever see it hardly when you used to see them do it all the time. No reason to give away what you’re doing that easily.

Some coaches, like Tara Vanderveer, won’t even discuss strategy in ANY context and forbids broadcasters from discussing it or listening in to their huddles. She felt at one time that an opposing team watched her halftime interview and made adjustments based on that.

It’s hard to recall now but I think they were playing Louisville in the NCAA tournament. That was a while back. Since then she has been tight lipped with any strategy talk on TV.

Oh God! You didn't really, did you?
So I have a very specific tactics question. When we inbound the ball is Kellie bringing up JP to mid central court to help break the press? If so are they using her to scrape the defender off on or as a tall place to throw the ball. JP looks like a good passer to me. Or have we always done that?

I don’t see much of this type of commentary during game threads that’s why I asked. If you want to do it I’d appreciate it.

I may not be your man for this,,,I am somewhat bored with this one post-in the paint and everybody else on the arc, offense.

I’m an idiot! SP Sara Puckett!

I lean towards the tall option,,,we rarely use screens properly

when I run my offense, if the screener and BH don't rub shoulders, I jump their shtuff!
There is no going over the screener if the screen is used properly (if shoulders touch, the only option is to trail the BHer)

But playing proper defense the defender of the screener needs to threaten BH as they go over the screen, thereby creating the space that the defender of the BH needs to get over the screen. It's tough for BH to rub shoulders if there is threat of a trap or a defender threatening their dribble in tight space on the other side of the screen.

I can't agree more. I get so frustrated when something is happening in the game that I want explained and the announcers are visiting with each other about common pals and old times and etc. etc. Drives me crazy. Pay attention to the game!!

Don't worry, tonight all the announcers will be talking about is the return of Queen Paige.

Who is JP? Jordan Puckett? ;)

Yes, the last couple of games they've used both Sara and Key at midcourt against a press and its helped alot. I think Horston has done it also. Gives Walker and Miles an option besides dribbling into a trap in a corner. They also have the option of using them as screens. Both Key and Puckett are pretty good passers.

Prior to that rough 4-game stretch, the LVs were pretty consistently outperforming the projected spread - and they got back on track with that against Mizzou and Vandy. Projections for tonight with rankings by those services:
- Massey: LV (#11) 71, Bama (#70) 64
- RealTimeRPI: LV (#4) 70, Bama (#125) 64
- Her Hoop Stats: LV (#21) 71, Bama (#57) 66

Not a lot of deviation among those predicted scores!

You are correct, the shoulder to shoulder thing is taught in Junior High and by the time you get to Div I WBB, the player guarding the screener (usually bigger than the BH) will pull a switch with the BH's defender and close that down immediately or fairly quickly if they are good/athletic. Then the BH needs elite handles/moves to create space against a bigger defender to get their shot off, or if they are really good, get the ball back to the screener going to the rim versus the smaller player. Elite level BH's do this fluidly, but average BH's get caught up in traffic against an athletic and bigger player and the results are often less than spectacular.

Shoulder to shoulder technique on the screen in college just means a good defender switches faster and rubs it out on the backside with a height advantage often. It works well in JH and HS, but in DI WBB the screen is often just a lead into a back door (see Uconn) pass or if the BH is elite, allows the BH to create their own shot off of a bigger less athletic player (see PB, Clarke etc, basically requires a skilled player at creating their own space against a taller defender).

Otherwise you just see screens being done all the time with little effect and fans complaining they are doing the screen wrong (not cutting hard enough etc) which is wrong.
