Game Thread: #20 Lady Vols v #16 Ohio State: Sunday Dec 3 @ 5PM; Home, ESPN

Nepotism is nepotism. And this is a classic case of why.
The technical "got around" is a farce.
OK if he's serving popcorn and cokes. No way he should have a $140,000/yr job at UT.
Something like being a biologist and working at TN Dept. of Environment and Conservation would be ok provided there is no favoritism.
Analyst role/non-bench role

Did Lane Kiffin and his dad draw this kind of constant kvetching?
Let’s face it. Some men don’t like to see men reporting to women and really don’t like seeing the husband reporting to the wife. I’m not saying Jon is a good coach but if he were just a random female coach he would not be subjected to the same amount of criticism.

Not critical of Jon. spouse or other family member regardless of gender would be a problem. Nepotism.
A non family member would not be a problem.

No mention of his brother in-law on staff either? Would have been the better one to go with. Monte helped create a defense scheme used by many as the Tampa 2 and has a Super Bowl ring. Many just question what does Jon do.

Nice spin by basically saying “I’m not saying Jon is a good coach”

If he was a good coach or deemed a good coach this topic wouldn’t be an issue. If he was a random female with the same issues, it would then be what does she do.

I'm curious, why always what does Jon do and not what do Sam and Joy do. I like both, but Sam is not exactly setting the world on fire in recruiting and Joy, unlike Jon, does very little in game coaching. Jon's actually the one we see doing something.

Don’t disagree…Sam hasn’t lived up to the recruiting expectations. But those on the board know she is here mainly for recruiting. Nobody can explain what Jon brings to the staff.

Oh OK, got it. Jon's bad because people on this board don't know what he does. Unlike the other two who either we also don't know what they do or we know and they aren't doing it well.

Jon’s been part of CH staff for 20 years. It should be easy for someone to point to the reason. The fact we are now a few years into this topic you’d think it would be defined.

Jon reports to the AD, not Kellie. That's how the University got around the nepotism and conflict of interest. Don't see her throwing him under the bus.

That alone is a red flag.

I maintain that this husband/wife duo thing is terrible. In all aspects, at all schools. Please, name ONE mens team of any sport where the coache’s wife is an assistant?

The focus on Jon as a pinata everytime the going gets rough is just comical. TN fans are reliable as hell in bad times though. Jon Gruden! Jon Gruden!

If only the problems were that simple to solve.

Why are you so triggered by this? No one is saying Jon is THE reason this program is failing so badly and replacing him is the solution. We recognize he is a symptom, not the cause.

That said, this is a message board for a sports team. When a unit of any team is underperforming, it's only natural the coach of that particular unit will come under scrutiny on any forum. It just so happens that this coach is married to the head coach, which fair or not makes for really bad optics and a worthy topic of discussion whether you feel it is warranted or not...

I’m not disagreeing nepotism virtually always a problem butI’ll stick by my gender observations.

Then you must not have paid much attention to what was being said about Ralph and Karen. Both received fair amounts of criticism, regardless of who was taking the lead.

That’s not how it looks to me, a man. It doesn’t appear he’s reporting to Kellie. It appears more like she’s reporting to him. It looks misogynistic and old fashioned. Like she needs her husband in order to do her job like it’s 1950 or something.

Does he need to approve all the purchases first as well? It’s just weird and not necessary. There are literally hundreds of better qualified women, many women of color, who could be holding that spot down. Instead it’s going to a SWM who couldn’t make things happen on his own. Same beef with all the other husband/coaches, just get outta the way and let your wife shine.

I make the point again, show me ONE men’s team of any sport where the head coach’s wife is an assistant.

Oh, I don’t disagree with anything you say. I was just noting that SOME men immediately look down on husbands who “work” for their wives, weak you know😂😂😂.

Well, there was certainly enough well deserved criticism to go around there. Weren’t they co head coaches? Did Ralph report to Karen. If not you missed my point.

I got your point. Regardless what titles they carried, one had to be lead. If Jon isn’t pulling his weight, either can him or go with the flow. To say criticism towards him is based on gender is that’s totally absurd.

Santos at Arizona State’s wife was his assistant until last year in gymnastics. Bart Connor was HC at Oklahoma and his assistant HC was Nadia Comaneci.

Not saying it’s right or wrong to have Jon on staff. There are successful coaching duos out there. Kindler and her assistant husband Jon Ball come to mind.

Bart and Nadia own their own gym. They have coached many OU gymnasts but to my knowledge they have never been formally associated with the university. Big difference running a private business and being employed by a public university.

I’m not familiar with Santos so good to know there is one case! That is what I asked for lol

Edit: I looked Santos up and he coaches the women. I asked for a men’s team, so minus one.
