Game Thread: (7/7) Lady Vols 59 - (RV/RV ) Florida 84

I would not be surprised if Tennessee pulls of the win, but they will have to dominate UConn on the backboard and be physical with them. I don't know what happened to Tennessee on the defensive end of the ball. Is it as simple as effort or have teams figured them out? Without the rebounding and defense, Tennesse is mediocre at best.
Add shooting percentage and free throws and turnovers.

Tennessee was never really good at those things the whole year. They were winning in spite of that because of defending and rebounding.
I was hoping while we were winning in spite of things we were also getting better at those things. Disappointing to seem to be going in the wrong direction on some of them. But hopefully it's a temporary, yet scary and costly, blip in the season's journey. Alot is going to be riding on the next few games.

Insightful comment. But just not each other. There are a few who understand the lessons you, @creekdipper and some others are laying out. Keep it up.
LOL not tryin to be lessonal. I'm honestly curious about the idea that bad play is rooted in naughty behavior, a willful choice bc tonight its just not worth the energy. Now we're even tying it up in politics and culture wars! Punish those sniveling little snowflakes! I'm asking for someone to teach me how that whole thing works. Heck maybe they're right.

Coaching had nothing to do with this loss.Sloppy ball handling which led to turnovers which led to 28 points on those turnovers.Players lost this game pure and simple.Players did not adjust to how refs were calling the game. Our guards were being fouled on at least 50% of turnovers so what should have happened was stop dribbling close to any Florida players and pass the ball....result was an embarrassing loss.In last quarter went to a zone and double teamed the ball in an effort to speed up the game and get some turnovers to close the gap but that strategy backfired due to Florida taking care of the ball and slicing up the LV's by good zone offense .
You obviously watched the game.

As some have said, we were tired. That doesn’t bode well for tournament time, but that’s beside the point. Maybe we let that tiredness rule our attitude. We didn’t get the calls from refs in Florida that we got from the refs at home, and we let ourselves become frustrated.

Horston was making faces, pointing at her arm, and arguing with the refs. On one play she just stood there, because she wanted a foul called, while play continued and they scored. She was benched more than once, but her play did not improve. For the game, she scored 5 points and had 6 turnovers. She wasn’t alone, we dribbled and passed as if we were not playing a team intent on stealing the ball. We were angry, our Defense disappeared.

Tiredness, frustration, entitlement attitude influenced our play. Mental toughness was there no longer.

I have no doubt Kellie is addressing this. Afterall, understanding why we played the way we did will help the Team recognize these situations in the future, and not give in to them. Mental toughness means fighting more than the other team, it means still playing to win even when you’re angry or frustrated. I believe we can get it back.

GO LADY VOLS!

We need em all...

Kellie was mentally tough, but sadly, none of that has rubbed off on this group. They play soft, and all the opponents have found that if they put pressure on us, we fall apart. Sad.
All the teams as if the other teams we beat didn’t play physical. 3 losses and now they play soft? 😂🤦🏾‍♂️ When they’re winning the ladies are being praised for being certain things but as soon as a loss come along all of sudden they don’t have those things anymore

Pretty clear they have no idea how to fix it or they would have. And that is a problem because turnovers are something you absolutely can control and improve upon.

I have a feeling - just a feeling - that they have not (until last night) considered that they have to really try to do something radically different to correct these turnovers, because 1) they have believed that they can offset them with offensive rebounds and second chance points, and 2) they really can't keep them from occurring because our guards are inferior talent/strength/length/athleticism/quickness-wise to the average guard tandems in the SEC. When we are on offense, defensive pressure on our guards is successful for that basic reason. The coaches are gonna have to figure out something, otherwise this will keep happening.

Maybe we can put the offending player(s) in the stocks to make the "fans" happy to see them publicly humiliated.

We could also allow "the fans" to come down and throw rotten fruit and vegetables at them, but those "fans" couldn't get their out-of-shape rears out of their seats and waddle down the steps. If any of them managed to make it, they be so out of breath that they wouldn't have the energy to pick up a 🍅, much less throw it.

I think your reply is a little tainted. You need to take a look at the two teams we have lost to in the past week. They are not elite. As a matter of fact, they have been steamrolled by some bad teams.

It is not as if we were playing top 2 or 3 teams in the country, or even close to the top tier in the SEC. Those were teams we should have steamrolled, but instead, we got steamrolled.

I wear the Orange tinted glasses as often as anyone, but I was forced to take them off and see those games honestly.

Key is one of the most talented defensive players in the country. FL has NO ONE that affects teams defensively like she does, and nationally probably only Aliyah Boston and Cameron Brink consistently do the same. That's a huge weapon for Tennessee

If she can't stay on the floor, what good is that talent? I'm not trying to be flippant, but you have to admit she gets so many fouls called on her when she's playing defense. Her talent lies in her anticipation and footwork to be in the right place at the right time, but then she often can't control her momentum when she's on the move and gets called for making body contact with opponents. She doesn't appear to be a leaper, nor a quick jumper off the floor. Offensively, she is limited by this lack of explosiveness. That's my read.

I'm not trying to complain about something just to attack or be negative. Just reporting what I observe. She's obviously a weapon because of her size and length, and her very good defensive footwork. She's a very good basketball player, And I'm very glad she's on our team and not an opponent's. But the fact is she is not staying on the floor long enough to be impactful these days.

Now, part of that is that our guards and perimeter players don't seem to be able to keep drivers from attacking her and drawing fouls. But she has to be able to figure out when and how to defend those incoming drivers in order to stay on the floor.

Yelling at people is one type of leadership. But it isn't the only type. And it is not a good thing to use it too often, lest you crush someone's basic confidence. I think the only time it is appropriate is when the player is loafing. As long as they are trying hard, encouragement is better than using the stick.

I think they have worn themselves out mentally. Most games the entire season with a few exceptions have been the same: We play offense in the first quarter like we are deer in the headlight including an amazing number of turnovers and missed shots. This allows good teams to take the lead, often building towards double digitargins at some point. Lesser teams can stay with us, and this fuels their confidence and energy. At some point in the second half, usually the 4th quarter. we harness tremendous energy and mount an amazing comeback. This style of game takes a mental toll on fans (that's me) to the point of exhaustion. Imagine how this must impact the players mental energy to have to do so repeatedly. It is catching up with them, so there was just nothing left to give to comeback from big deficits in our last 2 losses. You could see it in their faces and bodies (mine too!!). This apprach is not viable in the long run. It burns you out. Unless they learn to focus fearlessly from the beginning of the games. we will lose several more.

Not the best scenario now.... and it is the fundamentals which should be ok at this time of year.....

don't know why turnovers still so high.... why people are going one on one.... i just hope it gets better

Okay, just got to say, I admire Tamari Key tremendously. On Offense, while the rest of our team is moving around, passing, whatever, she is in a constant struggle with a defender, or more, just to stand up. Seems to me she is sometimes our biggest fighter. She has to fight way before she gets the ball, then fight sometimes multiple defenders to get the shot off, or get the rebound, and I am astounded when she even fights for loose balls on the floor. I’ve said I wish she could score more, and sometimes she does, but she gives maximum effort on both ends of the floor. Her blocks sometimes turn into steals, and she intimidates the opposition on Defense. You’ll hear no criticism from me. GO TAMARI!

Personally, I wouldn't make a long impassioned critique of people's angst about the game last night....while admitting I never even saw the game. I mean - you REALLY needed to see the game.....a real eye-opener, especially for those like me who thought the Auburn game was an outlier.

Nobody is asking coach to be fake or to be Pat. Several people just want more control in-game when things go off the rails, be it confrontations over blown assignments or just a timely time-out when the other team is on a run. Nothing earth-shaking really.
