Game Thread: (7/8) Lady Vols 70 - Ole Miss 58

I saw Walker was watching game film of our game against LSU last season today. Preparing for the overplaying guards of Ole Miss. The LSU defense last year was actually more similar to the Ole Miss defense this year, so a very smart idea to watch that game. LSU is much more disciplined this season where Ole Miss has that heavy over play, borderline foul every play kind of defense. Really try to get in the passing lanes and up in the ball handlers space and frustrate them. If played right we should get layups and they should get a LOT of fouls. But we all know how that goes on the road...
How deep is this Ole Miss bench? How many fouls (or which players' fouls) can they absorb without paying a price?

They have 15 players on their roster. Maybe not as deep in the post but they sorta do a 4 out 1 in type of scheme and take people off the dribble. We are gonna have to keep players in front of us and keep our composure.

Now that Rae is back, are we going to win?

If we could get Austin and Scott to the bench think we can deal with the rest. Actually Scott has been a terrific player for them this season a lot better than Austin thus far.

Defensively they go very deep. Offensively they have only about 3 players who can really make something happen. They have played a large rotation so far but this will by far be their biggest game to date.

Some thoughts after looking at stats on major games played by both teams. Early foul(s) on either team's center or point guard could make the difference. Then if one team hits near 68%+ free throws gets them an edge. Ole Miss seems to be a two point, inside machine, so KH will need KG to step up and play good minutes when TK is out.
If LV's could get hit free throws and make 5-6 threes... that might help even out what I expect to be too many TOs
Play the whole game. It doesn't end before 00 is on the clock whether regular or OT

From everyone's insights and information (which make this such a valuable thread and great fanbase) it sounds like we'll need quick feet along the perimeter to protect our lane protectors.

(Hey--it's Sunday morning. Every message has to have alliteration, right?)

It is going to be a battle royal on their home court .....here is hoping we come out on top at the end of regulation .

IMO the big three to watch for Ole Miss are Austin (13.0 ppg), Scott (11.5 ppg) and Baker (9.6 ppg). Austin in particular is the biggest matchup issue for us today. Tamari is much more mobile this season and we are going to need that. She is also going to have to stay on the floor. Which potentially means conceding some shots she would normally contest harder. I have no doubt Tamari (and her teammates) can keep her off the glass though, she isn't the most physical 6'5'' and will not enjoy all the contact she will see today.

Scott is a blue collar player who gets a lot of her scoring on offensive rebounds and transition plays. She has length and quickness but she is playing undersized for her position really. She and Alexus should be a good matchup. With Tamari in the paint she is doomed though I suspect. She mostly like to hit fade away jumpers from the middle of the key. Those are shots Tamari sends to half court almost every time, whether its her player or she is coming in help side.

Baker is a dynamic guard but still seems to be getting omfortable at this level after her transfer, a lot like Monk. Neither will have seen the level of play and physicality they are going to see today. Baker is a player I would be more concerned about a season or two ago, this season Miles and Walker are doing a nice job really bothering those smaller guards.

She is shooting 31 percent for the season hopefully she doesn't shoot better today.

She's becoming a volume shooter and kind of a lazy defensive player, she has taken by far the most threes for them but isn't hitting a good percentage as you point out. Only averaging 5 points so definitely taking too many shots. I'm betting we see Tennessee force her to hit a couple before we get out too hard.

I know we are 14-1 and I am really enjoying the moment. Hopefully we approach this game as if Ole Miss is one of the best teams in the country and play them like we are the underdog. We cannot allow our 14-1 record to give us the big head. I feel that our ladies will be ready for whatever Ole Miss throws at them and we will come out with a much needed win on the road.

we are 14-1
ol Miss is 13-1
That's all we need to know

Donnetta Johnson who has been playing sub par since coming back from injury had a 20 pt outing the last time we played hope she doesn’t come alive today

Yes, she is a player that always gets up for the Lady Vols. Kinda like Autumn Newby. Donetta is a spark for them with her energy but it has not translated to the stat sheet yet. What kind of injury did she have? She doesn't seem as effective defensively and that is how she scored a lot of her points before.

Hopefully we won't ever have to close down our arena like Stanford did again, but if we do every cardboard cutout needs to come with a loud speaker of a fan cheering. Problem would be how do you make all the cheers for Tennessee?

I really wonder if it is really relevant to play a tough schedule versus a weak one? Does it really make you that much better? That will be something to watch today as well.

I believe it does. Felt like we saw that with the Holly years. As the quality of our schedule diminished so did our play. I don’t think it was the players either.
