Game Thread: (7) Lady Vols 86 - (RV) Arkansas 83

Give the rookie a break. He didn't know who JoJo and Snoop are, and he didn't know what classification Tess and Edie's high school played in.

Obviously, a very close follower of the Lady Vols...highly invested in the program. ☝

If I recall he/she was a SUPER Holly supporter who went down with that ship.

Franklin has been around a long time. He used to be a positive fan but something changed him. I used to look forward to his posts. IDK. Different now.

Not only a double double but a duo (steals) duo (assists). Her best game yet, as she seemed to be the only LV player in the first half that showed consistent moxie. She is shedding her Freshman hesitancy, and this is hopefully a harbinger of things to come. She may be a key to how this team copes without Keyen.

The almost-game-losing play was also by Walker - the lazy pass that Arky took the other way for a lay-up inside two minutes that tied the game in OT.
Personally, I loved how Key battled at the end even though she'd played more minutes than she ever had. And we don't win without her clutch free throws.

Maybe, but the steal only tied the game. In regards to that turnover, I am reminded of what Coach John Majors' mother said after Johnny fumbled the ball on a critical play against Baylor (I think). Johnny's fumble lost the game and perhaps cost Coach Majors the Heistman Trophy. When asked about the fumble Coach Major's mom said, " If you work in the kitchen as much as John, sooner or later you are going to burn the biscuits." There is tremendous pressure jnvolved in playing the point.

Lady Vols vs. Arkansas Postgame Quotes - University of Tennessee Athletics

Lots of great quotes, so here’s the link.

Want to give a shout out to our loyal and loud fans!

Kellie:

when we needed them in the second half, our fans made a difference. They got loud. They got a freshman out there shooting some free throws, and that crowd was loud. That made that a little bit intimidating. I thought the student section was awesome. So, getting to say thanks to our students was really cool.

Ark. Coach:

On the missed free throws at the end of the game…
"It's Thompson-Boling Arena. I don't know if it was seven thousand people... that was the loudest seven thousand people I've ever heard in my life."

Great job students, and all the Lady Vol Fans!!!

Good comeback win against a team that, with its quickness, presents a lot of matchup problems for UT. After a really poor 2nd quarter, we came out with a lot more intensity in the 2nd half, which turned what could easily have been a loss into a close victory. We moved the ball better in the second half (but it's still not nearly as good as it should be), shot the ball better and worked harder on defense. Horston did her thing and had another strong all-around performance--she was good--but I thought Burrell's play in the 2nd half was a big factor in the win, and Key made some crucial free-throws. In fact, our team FT shooting--15 of 20--was a big plus in the game. This team BADLY needs Burrell to get back to close to her top form, as overall this team has some talent issues, and was pleased to see her raise her game when we needed it. Let's hope her form continues to improve. Puckett had a solid performance: She's not the most gifted player athletically, which could be said for a number of players on this team, but has a good understanding of the game and can make baskets.

Walker in the first half was causing us defensive problems because she wasn't fighting through screens. She kept switching off, leaving Key and others trying to cover quicker Arkansas players, And frankly they were beating us off the dribble all night. But guards are supposed to fight through screens and only call out a switch if it is necessary--and in the 2nd half (after I"m sure the coaches got on her), she fought through screens more often and produced a much better defensive effort.

Puckett had a 19 and Burrell had a 20 so we had five players that had overall really good games. Ramirez played out of sight got them always does when she sees orange.
Horston had 21, Tamari had 20, Sara had 19, Walker had 16, Rae had 14.

I was at the game, but could you TV viewers tell that Mike Neighbors spent more time talking to the officials than his team during timeouts? There was one extended TV timeout that he spent the entire time talking to two of the three officials. Meanwhile, his assistant coaches were talking to the players.

Seriously, this is what happened at almost EVERY timeout. 🙄

Good points. The game looked like a perfect storm with Arkansas hot from beyond the arc; the Ark posts hitting jump shots and drawing Key out from the block. the LVs not shooting well, and the defensive intensity not where it needed to be.

In the 2nd half, the LVs got their defensive game going and Walker recovered from a subpar 1st half. I was encouraged by Rae. She is still "off" from her best but you can see she is getting closer; she seemed just a little bity off. So, she is progressing and hit some BIG shots. Puckett was huge. She allowed the small ball line-up to work. Unfortunately, Dye had another off game. They need her to get back in the groove soon. But a really nice bounce back win.

And most of all it is really nice to see all the people who proclaimed that the LVs were just a mirage and could not beat ARK. because Kellie can't and the players are crap, making amends by posting their heartfelt congratulations to the team for a great effort and excellent coaching adjustments, and graciously acknowledging that they over reacted to an SEC loss on the road. Really great, oh wait, that happened in the alternative fan-verse. Oooopsie.

I’m not convinced Ramirez was actually fouled near the end of regulation that put her at the line to tie it with 6.5 seconds remaining.

Was there really a foul there?

A bail out call for a player falling off balance. Mike Neighbors had been working the refs all game so I guess he got some pay off.

This is Neighbors’ modus operandi. His main job (or so it seems) during the game is to cajole the officials into helping his team. His lead assistant actually coaches them during breaks.

That was an extremely gracious statement by Mike Neighbors following such a heartbreaking loss. Obviously not ALL coaches handle tough losses with such grace. Some of them choose to use their post-game interview time to play embarrassingly transparent, overused mind games with their players instead. They berate them, insult them, treat them like they are six-year-olds who are immature enough to not see through the juvenile tactic.

Good on Neighbors for not being like THAT.

What's to figure out: We're not very good. I have no idea how we got to a No. 5 national ranking. Arkansas, from what I've seen in this game, has more talent than we do. Their guards are better. They shoot and make 3s while we just saw our center miss a completely uncontested layup--how?--and horston shoot an air ball from 14 feet--didn't even come close to hitting the rim. Dye is contributing virtually nothing. We are very slow moving the ball. If you want to get 3-point opportunities, you have to have quick ball movement and pull the defense out of shape. We stand around and watch Horston dribble, then try to get the ball inside to a center who is not a good offensive player. Outside of Walker, we have no quickness and everybody on their team is beating us off the dribble--either getting to the rim or kicking out for 3s.
And yet, you watched the game. You must win the award for most negative comments in the fewest words.

Actually Key very much reappeared in the 4th quarter and overtime and for the first time in quiet a few games looked determined and showed initiative in that pivotal part of the game.
Yes, I see that she came back in the fourth quarter and over time-- Shows how much she is needed. Now, if we can get Dye back on track then things will be as they should be.
