I would expect our outside shooting percentage to be low in this game, at least, in the first half.

First, there's the normal excitement of first game in front of a (hopefully) raucous crowd. But this time it's combined with the players focusing on all the new (to tradition-trained instincts) emphases (like immediately attacking the ball on change of possession, instead of getting back on defense)--and all this while playing at a much faster pace!

Hopefully, having the standing green light to shoot open threes will make up for some of that extra thinking going on.

If 3s aren't falling for us early, I think players will resort to their athletic advantages and look to drive more often to the hole. If so, that might produce an interesting game stat: "3s made" compared to "and-ones completed."

“I simply questioned the value of drawing too many conclusions about the LVs from playing Carson Newman.”

Fair enough. I agree close to zero assumptions should be made based on a preseason or exhibition game.

So, if CN scores only 42, as you predicted, then the Lady Vols are a championship caliber team?
That was the statement I considered trollish. ☝️

Oh, I am looking forward to and am well aware of Coach Caldwell's system. I stand by my opinion that the score of this game predicts nothing. So, if CN scores only 42, as you predicted, then the Lady Vols are a championship caliber team?
poo is right,,,coming in with statements that from most new posters are usually old posters with new avatars

Re my low UT score prediction,,,yes we could run it up to 100+ and may do that, but only if all the players on the bench are at optimum...Pre-season games are for looking at your deep bench, thus my prediction is less than if this was an in-season game

I think people need to relax and try to be forgiving of people who, if after months of no basketball to watch, they go nuts with excitement/over-the-top statements during and after an exhibition game.

It's all in fun! And SO WHAT if people go overboard about an exhibition game!? Fans are excited! It's what fans do! Everyone will be okay even if the basketball-starved fans, on a long-awaited game day, put way too much stock in what happens against Carson-Newman. I promise!

Let the people get their blood pumping again without putting them down for it and trying to curb their enthusiasm. 🥹

I’ll be glad if we no longer have to fear every small guard w a blond ponytail we play against. The last few yrs, and CN was an example, we’ve given up career nights to many of these players . The simple ability to close out on a 3 would be a giant step forward.

Such a well put together early schedule for a change. CN gets jitters over and firsts done, then a couple of easy games to learn from, then a nice little test with Middle. Then two more easys, then a stern test w Fla St. in early Dec. All without leaving Knoxville.

Hate the lack of Sunday afternoon games.

This first preseason game against CN will give us an unequivocal view of how CKC's team will look in its first preseason game against CN.

We seem to have this debate every season about the meanings and ramifications of a preseason, gift game to a nearby D2 program.

As we learn each year, these results don't translate very well to games against UConn, SC and the like.

This game is just a first peak at new players and some eye test assessments of returners. Do they seem fit, does their jump shot seem improved and so on.

It is kind of a bummer from a watching standpoint though. Very few teams to be excited about until maybe FSU or MTSU? Still likely a wise choice given her statements about early struggles.

Amen!

This new development may add back a couple of life years I probably lost in stressing about constantly getting torched by those players.

Carson-Newman is always a tough D2 team. They've got a strong winning tradition. Even so, I'm with CJ on this one. Unless Kim has decided to emphasize offense only (HIGHLY unlikely) in this game and we pretty much let them score at will, I don't see C-N getting 75.

I agree. I get this is nowhere close to a finished product, but if the goal is to make other teams uncomfortable by way of pressure defense, and a D2 team scores 70+ points, that would be rough...overall I'm just excited to have actual basketball to watch again, love this time of year!

My sentiments exactly. Last year we gave up 72 (!!) points to Carson Newman. That’s unacceptable and HORRENDOUS. Definitely was a snapshot of what was to come. I also remember giving up 80 to effin Ole Miss in January. NC State ran circles around the team in March.

I hope we come out on fire Thursday night!
Ran Circles? It was a 7-point loss with some controversial calls down the stretch to a team that made it to the final 4 on their home court. I wouldn't call that running circles around a team.

Maybe you should go back and watch the entire game. The final score isn’t indicative of how the game went. NC State got A LOT of buckets in transition. We were down 20 at half, and tried making a furious comeback. And failed. A lot of games went that way under KJH.

Especially last season. Anybody want to discuss why? I haven't figured it out.
