We're getting to see some of the best players in the NCAA, early on. We watched Ta'Niya Latson go off for 38 points; part of that due to some careless handling and bad passing on offense, and missed assignments on defense; the bigger part of it, however, she's really good. And, she's 5'8!" What a performance!
There's a different style of great at Iowa: Lucy Olsen, just like Latson, is an All-American candidate who plays a brilliant game of basketball: three level scorer, savvy defender. And she's a terrific passer - long and rangy with the ability to skip or lob the ball into the post, and, she's expert with angles while on the move. Put another way: had Lucy gashed her knee a week later, we win by twenty-plus. She's the glue.
The good news is we have a longer, more athletic team than Iowa, so we can stay with their shooters. Their post players are tough, determined, and stout, but we should out rebound them, though not by much.
For the not-so-good news: overall, their experience and style could neutralize our athletic advantage, making them difficult to trap and confound. Nor should we expect a high number of turnovers with our press due their excellent spacing, they don't wait for the defense, and they keep the ball in flight. They do what they do very well.
Bottom line: This is a tough scout for Coach Caldwell. She must continue to work on us, while preparing for a very good opponent. I have no clue about the score, but expect it to get to the low-eighties.
Cheers.
