Game Thread: Iowa v Lady Vols, Sat Dec 7th ; Shark Beauty Women's Champions Classic; 7PM; FOX network TV; WIN 78-68

Gotcha, we do have a miscommunication issue. To your question, "We lose this kind of game dating back to the prime Summitt years" implies that the Lady Vols had always lost these kind of games going all the way back to the prime Summit years. Which of course would be factually wrong.

I think you meant, "we have not won this kind of game since the prime Summitt years."

Sorry for the misinterpreting your intent.
Once again…disagree on what it “implied”. Dating back to me meant that “Prime Summitt” was the endpoint.

I forgive.

Legends have degrees of freedom that a first year coach (at this level) does not. Different strokes for different situations.
don't agree
The Lady Vol name is just as legendary as Pat herself,,,bc she made it so.

Jan Jensen never mentioned Pat in her opening to her team,,,she said "the Lady Vols" by team name.

This IS Tennessee and this is the Lady Vols org
Now, then and always
No matter who's coaching

Kim has much more power and influence in situations where she may not have had the clout before and if she doesn't use it she will lose it

Everybody who isn't Tennessee wants Tn to lose, even the zebras can be biased.

She has "that stare",,,I see it,,,now use it

And no I'm not looking for a free pass @Majors ,,,I post for what I am, not as a fan, as a coach of over 40 years. And if I see an aspect of my skill that can be used to a better advantage, I ain't scared to call it out...As a coach I have weapons only I can use and working the refs is one of them,,,,and believe me, I know!,,,it is a very difficult skill/weapon to master. But it IS a weapon that has to be drawn at times

Guys, I am ecstatic that TN pulled out the victory.
It is actually an upset.
we beat a team ranked ahead of us,,,how often in the last two orgs did that happen...More importantly we didn't cower and just fold, we fought and won...Helluva win and I am proud of each and every warrior, coach and staff included!

Oh Lord he's off his meds again.

Our quick hands are everything. I don't recall seeing any Lady Vol team, even the championship winning teams, with as many players as capable of being disruptive with their hands and feet.

The way Iowa abused us with the back- door cuts and interior passing and drawing our defenders off the shooters was exactly what the staff needed to see. The players are going to learn a LOT from Iowa. A whole lot.

Kim should send Jen a nice bouquet of flowers for helping her out with those tough lessons while STILL getting the win. Ha!
How do you teach that? Do they have special reflex drills? Absolute klepto hands, it's uncanny. It's also why esp Coop gets alot of cheap fouls tho. Has to know when and where.
We did pick off about 7 lobs in that game. Our backside defense is coming along. They kept trying to make that pass over the top to O’Grady and we were on it all night.

They mostly got her off penetration and the bounce pass after the help came.
I had just said I don't know why they don't baseball pass over our press. Then Ruby fielded one perfectly like an NFL safety. So, yeah, that's usually not going to be a great option.
My opinion this faster pace has some players hurry their shot or their legs are a little tired from the extra conditioning. When you don’t have your legs it hurts your shooting especially on 3s. A lot of these players like Sara & Jewel are used to passing the ball around running the clock before shooting. I hope & think after a while the pace will be 2nd nature. Seems like the holdovers minus Tess are needing more time to adjust to pace in regard to shooting 3s.
I do think frantic D sometimes carriers over. I also think some of the returnees are struggling w the frequent substitutions. They actually said so in an interview last weak. Lots of outside shooters depend on rhythm, which you don't establish in 2 minute spurts.

Do you think what the Iowa coach said something that is borderline racist in her huddle last night. I know Dawn didnt like what Iowa said a few years ago about the bar fight. Iowa coach in the huddle said this.. " They may be taller, jump higher, and are faster, but they are not better basketball players players".

Great observation regarding fresh legs required for optimum 3 point shooting!

Totally true reason I am hoping for better shot selection now. I thought it was a lot better in the second half last night after some really poor thought out shots in the first half.
I really do not believe that several of our present players have the consistent shooting touch to score as CKC would like. I do believe that their shooting will improve. With 31 turnovers they should have crushed Iowa. However, in the last of the fourth quarter the ladies came through big time. This team has heart and will be a load to deal with.

She probably has a certain measure and understanding that the officials she is dealing with are

A) bad to begin with

B) can have enormous egos

C) will be on the floor evaluating her team’s play for many years to come.

Right now, my favorite thing about CKC is that she grabbed the "magic time out theory", tied it up, placed it in cement boots and threw it in the Tennessee River, then set the river on fire, recovered its charred, drowned carcass, and placed it in a trash compactor, then took the crushed remains, and placed those in a CERN machine where she obliterated it into subatomic particles and then she fed those to her cat.
But, she did call some timeou ...oh, you're talking the magic time out to stop a run theory.

I have to agree with the folks who said Jensen's postgame remarks—specifically, when she said we'll have to see how the Lady Vols do against SEC teams—had a distinct flavor of sour grapes. She easily could've said something like, "You know, it's a very different kind of system, but her team is clearly buying in and they're playing really well, so hats off to Kim for an impressive season thus far." That's such a layup of a comment, so to insinuate anything along the lines of "this gimmicky style won't hold up against SEC teams" is obviously a calculated remark.

Also, as someone else noted, this line of reasoning is a little weird because you're somewhat implying that your own team isn't stiff competition. Whoops.

We need to recruit a 3pt shooter next year!!! Just image if we would have had Nye from Alabama like we almost did until Alabama tried to scare her with the tamper stuff...

Ta'Niya Latson
Allie Turner
Kymora Johnson
Mikayla Blakes
Kiki Smith- Coldwell coached her older sister
Imari Berry- from TN
Taliah Scott

She is in a recruiting battle with the Lady Vols for 2026 McKenna Wolizcko.. So shes going to throw some shade at the Lady Vols

Definitely what they were talking about.

The one she did call was more along the lines of a “Pull yer head out of yer ass” variety, and certainly needed at the moment called! 😉🧡
Correct!!

Let me do something completely out of character and pontificate.

When this debate first raged on the board, I come across a research article that analyzed 10 years of NBA data to address the effectiveness of TOs in breaking an opposing teams' runs.

The research showed that indeed, TOs did have statistically significant effect on breaking runs but they also found that other tactics were as or more effective, such as making subs or changing defensive schemes. The analytic conclusion was that TOs have more strategic value later in a game so coaches should conserve their TOs and use these other run breaking tools. I am willing to bet this approach has become the analytics wisdom.

Now, think about CKC's subbing patterns. It is almost like she disrupt runs before they start -- (On the flip side, I think the mass subbing may sometimes break our own offensive momentum but that is a different story).

The TO that CKC called was not just to stop a run but, as you note, to end a series of blundering decisions.

I can admit when I'm wrong

No you can't
yes I can
You're wrong
You're right
I'm right about you being wrong?
Are running it like football picking contest.
Pick the winner actual score
Pick the loser minus actual scores.
at sample Team a beats team b 95 to 85
Then if you guess 93 team a beats team b 83
Then that guesser miss by total of 4
Never mind Knox seen it for myself in less than two minutes

Yes there's something at least racially uncomfortable with the whole construct of black players being "athletic" but lacking refined skill and vice versa for white players - smart and skilled but "slow and unathletic". It's an easy jump from there to where apparently a few Iowa fans went on their board - thugs, "bar fighters".

Truth is there just aren't alot of players who are both athletic and highly skilled. I don't think lack of either is due to race.
