Game Thread: Iowa v Lady Vols, Sat Dec 7th ; Shark Beauty Women's Champions Classic; 7PM; FOX network TV; WIN 78-68

They’ve already announced that Jenna will be the one that takes the lead for however long Kim is out. I would expect she would take a more active front facing role over the next few weeks to prepare for that.
She already seems to be doing that to some extent she was doing a lot more during the Iowa game than I have seen in other games.

Some people just can't get their heads out of their collective asses and into the 21st century. All I saw was two pretty good teams play hard but fair for 40 minutes and one made the plays at the end to win.

That is nothing but a butt-hurt coach who thinks CKC didn't "pay her dues." Jensen spent a quarter of a century in Iowa City waiting for Lisa Bluder to retire, even though she could have gotten a HC job anytime she wanted, including actually being offered a chance to succeed Bluder at Drake in 2000. Basically, she's the new Holly Warlick. Now she's getting beat by this 36 year-old upstart who got one of the most famous brands in women's basketball after one year as a D1 head coach, playing a style no one else has the guts to try.

She will probably lose to South Carolina and LSU and a few other teams in SEC play and someone like Jensen will feel vindicated. But she should keep in mind that Caldwell just threw this team together out of the portal and holdovers from a coach who played a different style, and she's going to face Tennessee again in years to come--when the team is one Caldwell recruited and has had a lot of experience with the system. I wouldn't be too snarky if I can't beat her now...

I don't think Kim being away will make much difference at all. I'm sure she'll be a constant zoom presence in practice and prep and on the tablets during games. She's handled this whole thing so seamlessly I'm sure she'll handle her time "away" the same way. Really admirable how she's handled it as just not a factor at all.

I echo what Lucy said the other day. I hope Kim will take her time. She's going to have lots of teams, but she's only going to have this newborn once. Maybe if she feels really connected to the process she'll be able to relax and enjoy/endure life with a newborn. There's absolutely nothing that can prepare you for the unique experience.

Jenna knows the system and everything Kim does 100 percent will be no difference except how Jenna coaches the team. Will she be as forceful as Kim. All the in game chats with players about what they are doing in the game. All that certainly matters as making adjustments during a game seems to be something Kim is really good at hope Jenna can keep that going.

Maybe she comes back to home games first.
Then miss a few more roads game.
When she decides to return after giving birth to her bady.

Just guessing:

One thing I do get concerned about is CKC getting opportunities to be involved with USA basketball.
Not sure poobahs will be thrilled with her approach to the game and there will be some jealousy among her coaching peers if she has the success we anticipate.
Premature worrying on my part but USA basketball would be a help to recruiting and an honor for our coach and school. Cross that bridge down the road I suppose.
Her coaching the USA would be huge!!! She needs to get on the phone with Sue Phillips

That was actually someone else but I couldn’t agree more. That baby is going to have a lot of aunties!!!

On this one life issue, I am betting that CKC actually does go full CPS. She'll drop that baby out while watching game film and making recruiting calls and be on the practice floor next day, new born in a front tote and yelling at her players who are not giving the necessary level of effort. She will also hop in on the defensive drills to show players how to get in the correct defensive position.

I disagree with this. Based on what I've heard and seen from Jensen, she IS head coach material and will be a darn good one going forward. Holly was a wingman, at best, FOR the best. But when The Best was gone, so was Holly's true calling. She was born to be a good-hearted support staffer, not a leader.

Jensen, on the other hand, is a leader who is simply in her first year as a head coach after losing THREE truly amazing players in Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin and Gabby Marshall. Iowa is a good, well-coached team that will have a terrific season under a coach who will, in either wins or losses, be capable of communicating smartly about her team and the game.

I believe there's a distinct possibility this happens, tho I wish Kim would take her time.

While undoubtably the Caldwells are overjoyed, KC seemed almost apologietic about it in a way. Made clear it wasn't in the year one plan when she was hired. Seems extra important to her not to let it be disruptive to the season. Therefore she might be back sooner than later.

Also, there's no real comparison w Pat. Most of her pregnancy was off season then Tyler was born in September. Perfect timing

How in the world did I miss that?! Thanks for the update.

Yeah, I imagine she thought something along the lines of, "Great, Kim. This is what you need in your first year in THE biggest career year of your life -- something to alter your ability to see the entire year through uninterrupted and feeling strong. Not."

It kinda is crazy for her to be experiencing SO many huge changes in her life and career all in the span of a year or two. I wouldn't be surprised to hear she's already spotted a few early grays on her head. 😅

For Jenna what a great opportunity if she can pull off some big wins she may not be with Coach Kim much longer. Going to be a lot of coaches out of work after this season and several job openings. Depending on the job she does I could definitely see herself getting one of those jobs.

If I were one of the new staffers I'd probably want to enjoy the trappings of being a part of the Tennessee Lady Vols for at least three years before moving into what might be a sitch where there's little fan support and fewer resources. Everyone associated with the Lady Vols program gets treated really, really well. That'd be a lot to walk away from so quickly.

Yeah, nothing likely to come open in the SEC seems like an upgrade for Gabe or Roman. Texas A & M, Georgia, and Missouri are not exactly tempting. I do worry about other national jobs though. The recruiting class they just pulled off in the first year rocketed them up the chart.

IF CKC is the secret sauce, she will be able to tap new talent as needed. I think this staff may stay together for at least two seasons.
