Game Thread Lady Vols at (#15) Indiana

Is this Kellie's biggest win as coach here? Credit to her and the team for not folding and picking up a much needed quality win. Who cares if wasn't pretty? Don't complain about a top 15 road win.

To that point, credit to Rennia Davis as well. It isn't a coincidence that Kellie picked up her biggest win in the first game Davis finally played like an All-American.

Of course we can't have nice things without disappointment, and the news about Green sucks. Davis will now likely have to play some spot minutes at center in small-ball lineups as they're getting nothing from the post players right now...
I think this is easily the best win of Kellie's tenure thus far. On the road against a solid, experienced top 15 team.

Horston, Burrell and Davis will need to produce like today game in, game out...but I'm ok with that because Tennessee can get away with low scoring games if they can defend like they did today...and Key is a major piece of that.

If forced to choose between Green's offensive production vs. Key's defense, I'll go with Key 100% of the time. No disrespect to Keyen, but Key is the identity of Tennessee's defense, and any offensive shortcomings are more than made up for her ability to completely disrupt the opposing team on defense. Even if she is invisible on offense, I'd want her on the court as much as possible. Against a team like SC or MSST that has size inside, Key would make much more of an impact.

That’s great and all but she (Key) better get in gear because she wasn’t a factor on the offensive or defensive side tonite.. i still have faith in her a lot actually.

But my point was the energy and toughness piece and that is something Key lacks in both areas. She slumped her shoulders and Kellie yanked her right back out. I actually enjoyed seeing Kellie chew the refs out and also the girls getting their ears chewed by the coaches.

Like others here, I am puzzled as to how we can have so many post players 6'4" and up and yet consistently get very few points out of that group, regardless of the opponents they face. What's up with that? I find it difficult to believe that it's just that the universe dealt Tennessee so many posts who are not capable of learning how to focus enough to hit those easy shots under the basket. I'm worried that the post coach isn't a very good teacher. : /

I seriously doubt that Kellie would ever let her husband go off the staff, even if she should. Having two coaches in the same family with different jobs with different programs would likely make it nearly impossible for them to manage the two small children. : /

Anyway, hopefully they'll start coming around really, really soon and start putting points on the board. It's handicapping the entire team to have post players who don't hold up their end of the scoring sheet. Jon could really use some help from outside the program, but something tells me he's not the kind of guy who would believe he needs help or ask for help even if he did know he needed it. He just needs to try something new because what he's doing isn't working.

The problem is her offense is affecting her defense and she can't stay on the court. Tennessee has had two competitive games, and she fouled out of both of them in 18 minutes or less. She has to learn to play smarter and keep her frustration under control...

Broke down and paid for a month of Big10+. So far the biggest difference after the first quarter is the defense!!! So much more action defensively in the first quarter compared to the WV game.

Jon could be a nagging problem, but let’s give it another 7-8 games before throwing in the towel.

As for the win... make no mistake, this was a huge victory for the LV program and CKH.

Syracuse is going down and I'm not suprise. I have no idea how they made it to up 25.

I agree man. They just look completely unorganized. Unpopular opinion but I don’t think Hillsman is a very good coach. They had some ugly defensive breakdowns. UNC was hitting some shots tonight after a couple cold games also.

Lady Vols imposed their will in the first half of the IU game so far. Horston made several nice plays through contact. Great to see her find the balance and avoid the charge. Our defense in the first half was excellent. IU was very frustrated and they couldn’t buy a bucket from 3. Having Key in the paint just totally shuts it down. She has to be more careful and not pick up the cheap fouls.

What I hear from former NCAA women’s basketball players is that Jon is doing his job; the post players are learning how to do theirs. It’s going to take some time.

I’m sorry to hear this. Had a feeling she’d be out with an injury. That’s kinda her MO. She’s sustained some sort of injury that has limited her floor time every year of her long career. She’s either very unlucky or very breakable.

What was a pretty deep team just got a lot thinner. So bummed to hear about Keyen. Injuries are the worst.
And this is one reason Kellie subs a lot. She’s said it. You never know when you’re going to lose a player and someone else has to step in.

Yes. It’s very true, rotation was pretty tight tonight. You can tell she really wanted this one. Big win for the program. I hope Indiana performs well in the Big 10. Don’t want to see this win end up like the win over ND last season. Their poor performance as the season progressed negated any positive we got from it.

The jury is still out on Jon. Thanks to Covid he hasn’t had a true off season with the post players and then he was out the first few games in quarantine. Hopefully the post players will find their rhythm because this team needs them to give a little more offensively. Just hitting the bunnies when they get touches would increase their output to 14-18 points as a group.

Injuries and the portal are good reasons to have 15 players to begin the season.
with keyen being injured maybe Kellie should go shopping in the portal......NCAA is being very generous with waivers this year lets give it a shot
