Game Thread Lady Vols at Wichita State

She played against midgets.....I mean little people (Seinfeld)

I'd rather have Russell than not have her...unless you bolt 5" extensions to Bashaara's legs.

She may not be that good a basketball player, but she's 6'6, and that comes in handy.

Problem is she has zero post moves. Her only move is to catch the ball underneath the basket while facing the basket, and go up for the layup. Any back to the basket shots she makes are pure luck; she has zero touch and her shot attempts look like Shaq's free throws.

Dean needs to earn his salary with this one.

I have more faith in Cooper improving than i do with Reynolds. good to see Carter play the way she did tonight hopefully that's the carter we see from now on. they need to get a new assistant coach to work with the guards, Law is the one who usually works with the guards and she's just not getting the job done.

Haha you may be on to something with the five inch extensions

Cooper has a bit of Simmons in her, but she needs to get the ball in the hoop more before she gets mentioned (favorably) in the same breath as Meighan.

Her shot form stinks, though. That will be hard to get around.

I really don't think Holly will be here much longer. It's just how far will AD Hart let it fall before he does something. I'm thinking it's going to get much worse before it gets better.

To be fair Holly should have never been given the job. She should have been sent off to gain some head coaching experience before she was handed the keys to the Bentley.

Never should a coach with no head coaching experience be appointed coach of an elite program. I don't care who you are.

Holly said in the post game interview that maybe this team gained some confidence with their outside shot with this game. She evidently has no idea what she just watched. I'm speechless after this game tonight. She acted like we just beat a top 5 team on the road. We are in TROUBLE..............

I think he would pull the trigger if they fail to make the NCAA tourny this season. That would be a monumental failure. It could happen.

And I had such high hopes for cooper. What's happening to all our highly ranked players? Is holly ball seriously having that much of a negative effect on them?

Not to throw too much gasoline on the fire, but I just noticed some startling facts about the TN offense:
TN has now scored under 20 points in their last 8 quarters, and has only scored 20+ points in 2 of their last 20 quarters, and four of their last 32 quarters (8 Games.) That is just astonishingly poor offensive production, all of it on the home court except for these last 4 quarters at Wichita.

Nine assists, 20 turnovers: Same problem every game; those numbers show that we are a sloppy, poor passing team with an offense that does not create easy baskets. 39 percent shooting, Some problems are becoming clear:

1) We are a bad offensive team, badly coached offensively--and particularly bad against zone defenses, because we force passes inside too much. Warlick has the players obsessed with getting the ball inside when defenses are playing zone against us precisely to stop our inside game! Duh! We have no plan B, no real sense of purpose beyond getting it inside, and thus we have no rhythm. Our ball and player movement is FAR too slow. Guards should be ready to catch and shoot on kickouts, but they aren't ready.

2) Reynolds and Cooper are playing poorly and are not good against zone defenses, at all: I think the two of them were 3 for 14 tonight, and have been shooting badly all year. I believe Reynolds's shooting percentage is under 30 percent this year. She has been completely ineffective all year--and same with Cooper since her good first game. When we get healthier both of these players should be spending more time on the pine, as we're going to be seeing zone defenses all year, unless teams are really committed to man defense. Teams would be crazy not to play zone against us. Our guard play generally has been pathetic--Carter with a good game tonight, however. I want to see Middleton more; she is not great, but she has a nice jump shot and offers more outside scoring potential against a zone.

3) We are losing the three-point shooting game within a game badly every game. We had 1 tonight, WSU had 8. A consistent problem. When you are playing zones, you have to make threes. We don't. Again, I think this is why Middleton, when she gets healthy, needs more minutes. She is not as athletic as Cooper--but the zones defenses are mitigating our athleticism. We need people in the game who can make outside shots. BADLY. Can Middleton? I don't know, but she good form--she shoots a real jumper as opposed to the set shots we see from Reynolds and Cooper.

4) Russell is simply not all that good. That really became apparent tonight--sadly! Playing against a seriously undersized team, she had 2 baskets. I think, like everybody, she is partly a victim of our CRAP offense, but she has not impressed this year. She works hard but doesn't accomplish much. She needs have better hands--I think her hands are pretty good, but she fumbled away three passes in the first half tonight. She also has to be more decisive when she gets the ball. Also, when one of our bigs has the ball, why doesn't the other set some picks and let's see if we can get some layup opportunities for our guards. Alas, that does not seem to be part of our offense. We get almost NO layups out of our offense--whereas Notre Dame is brilliant at using picks to get layups. This is another obvious weakness in our offense.

4) DeShields has been a bit underwhelming. I expected a bit more from her. She has been good in a couple of games, but generally a bit spotty. Had a weak game tonight. I'm sure her legs are one issue and our CRAP offense (have I mentioned that?) is another issue--but don't feel like we're getting the Full DeShields at this point.

5) We need to get Nared healthy and see what she and Middleton can do, I think. We have to find a guard who can make outside shots. If not, then we probably should play a bigger rather than a smaller lineup--with Carter at PG and DeShields at the 2, with Graves, Nared and Russell. That might be a nice lineup down the road--but it will take Nared a while to get in a groove--though of course nobody gets in a groove on this team. Still, we are playing guards that are consistent net negative contributors, and that has to change.

It's shocking to say the least. they better get their act together on offense or they will be watching the NCAA tournament from holly's office.

I heard holly on the radio pre-game talking about playing better on defense.

The team's defense is "ok" but not great IMO. Holly had to go to a zone to stop dribble penetration. The team is collapsing on penetration, but in this game Holly didn't want that - but they weren't listening to her. The team has mental lapses - they play great defense for 25 seconds and then lose a 3-point shooter who gets off a shot or they'll chase and chase and then stop, and the player scores or assists. Don't be fooled by the press. WSU had 23 turnovers. Without those turnovers WSU probably would have scored in the low 60's. That score wouldn't have been a good defensive effort IMO. The LV's will not be able to force 23 turnovers against better teams.

Are you kidding me! You mean shooting 21/54 doesn't impress you... how about 1/8 from the 3point line. What if I told you that Wichita State was the best "bad" team we beat all year.

Thank goodness the Vols men play Wed night on TV also -- I wont have to watch Stanford destroy Warlick

If Russell can't catch a pass that's not on the coaches.

I agree, but what we don't know is are these passes that she doesn't catch in practice? I am of the opinion that a number of missed passes are the result of the passer making a pass that they don't do in practice. There were two passes tonight - one from DeShields and another from Graves - that the look of frustration/surprise on Russell's face as the ball shot through her hands makes me think the passer was at fault.

This gets back to Holly not practicing offense enough for the player's to get comfortable with each other on the offensive end.

What makes it a crap offense is poor fundamentals. Mainly poor passing and therefore it has a cascading effect causing poor movement by the players and poor shooting. Way too much dribbling. I think Russell's main problem is she is being poorly coached. She looked much better this past summer playing against international competition. She was better coached.

(Pardon if already posted) but

a team that lost to Creighton by 25, lost to Mizzou by 20, and lost to Arkansas State by 27 (that is Arkansas STATE, not Arkansas!!!) ......

we could only beat by 7 ?????

When you list that you expect more from DeShields, Russell, Carter, Reynolds, Cooper, etc. I think we have to look at the common denominator among them and that is Holly. I can't blame the players for not playing well when the coaching isn't good.

I noticed this too a couple of games ago I was watching some passes thinking they would get a wide open shot but the defense always collapses on them much faster than they should and poor passing seems to be the only plausible explanation. They should probably spend 30 minutes of practice just on passing - it would help reduce turnovers and help create offense.

Last year during the women's tournament I watched UCONN play some unfortunate team in the first round. The announcers were talking about how they got to watch UCONN practice during the week. They said it was very boring. Luigi had the team working on passing for their entire two hour practice. Nothing else. THIS IS DURING THE TOURNAMENT!
