Game Thread Lady Vols at Wichita State

I hate to tell you I told you so, but...
I noticed in her first year that Holly was in over her head. I was just waiting for everyone else to come around. Structure from upperclassmen carried her in the early days, but the deterioration was noticeable as the time went on. Urban Meyer has a little bit of it in his programs in football. A lot will say, yeah but he has won two NCs. Yep, but fla was a dumpster fire when he left. Osu will be a dumpster fire when he leaves there, only he won't be able to fake health issues. Watch and see.

Nine assists, 20 turnovers: Same problem every game; those numbers show that we are a sloppy, poor passing team with an offense that does not create easy baskets. 39 percent shooting, Some problems are becoming clear:

You have a lot of good observations.

Per Russell, she is a 6-6 project player. I actually think she has some decent post moves; a nice baby hook; a decent turnaround jumper. But, her reaction time is AWFUL. The reason her hands look bad is that she is always getting to the ball late and she does not seem very strong in the upper body. You can compare to Bashaara who is not a great leaper but reacts to the ball quickly, plays strong, and has hands like crocodile jaws.

Both the reaction time and strength can be improved but it may be next year (or her senior year) before M.R. has a real shot at being a dominating player.

DeShields -- I hope it is a case of her still finding her form and getting over the injuries. No doubt the LVs need more from her. As I have said before, a game changing player can make life much easier for a team. The success or failure of the LV season hinges on if she can indeed live up to the expectations. When we get to the heart of the season, they need her putting up 20 games consistently. Right now, she seems not ready for that kind of production. But I remain optimistic that she will get it going.

Graves almost always looks great against smaller teams. The LVs won't go far if she can't put up these kind of numbers against bigger posts.

Carter - the real bright spot. Let's hope this marks the start of an upward trend.

Moving Cooper to a sub role is a smart move. She is not understanding the game just yet. Hopefully, her mind will catch up to her physical talent as the season goes on.

Jordan -- Not many alternatives right now but when Nared and Jones get back, she will need to earn her minutes.

Dunbar -- another project player. Maybe next year...

Nine assists, 20 turnovers: Same problem every game; those numbers show that we are a sloppy, poor passing team with an offense that does not create easy baskets. 39 percent shooting, Some problems are becoming clear:

1) We are a bad offensive team, badly coached offensively--and particularly bad against zone defenses, because we force passes inside too much. Warlick has the players obsessed with getting the ball inside when defenses are playing zone against us precisely to stop our inside game! Duh! We have no plan B, no real sense of purpose beyond getting it inside, and thus we have no rhythm. Our ball and player movement is FAR too slow. Guards should be ready to catch and shoot on kickouts, but they aren't ready.

2) Reynolds and Cooper are playing poorly and are not good against zone defenses, at all: I think the two of them were 3 for 14 tonight, and have been shooting badly all year. I believe Reynolds's shooting percentage is under 30 percent this year. She has been completely ineffective all year--and same with Cooper since her good first game. When we get healthier both of these players should be spending more time on the pine, as we're going to be seeing zone defenses all year, unless teams are really committed to man defense. Teams would be crazy not to play zone against us. Our guard play generally has been pathetic--Carter with a good game tonight, however. I want to see Middleton more; she is not great, but she has a nice jump shot and offers more outside scoring potential against a zone.

3) We are losing the three-point shooting game within a game badly every game. We had 1 tonight, WSU had 8. A consistent problem. When you are playing zones, you have to make threes. We don't. Again, I think this is why Middleton, when she gets healthy, needs more minutes. She is not as athletic as Cooper--but the zones defenses are mitigating our athleticism. We need people in the game who can make outside shots. BADLY. Can Middleton? I don't know, but she good form--she shoots a real jumper as opposed to the set shots we see from Reynolds and Cooper.

4) Russell is simply not all that good. That really became apparent tonight--sadly! Playing against a seriously undersized team, she had 2 baskets. I think, like everybody, she is partly a victim of our CRAP offense, but she has not impressed this year. She works hard but doesn't accomplish much. She needs have better hands--I think her hands are pretty good, but she fumbled away three passes in the first half tonight. She also has to be more decisive when she gets the ball. Also, when one of our bigs has the ball, why doesn't the other set some picks and let's see if we can get some layup opportunities for our guards. Alas, that does not seem to be part of our offense. We get almost NO layups out of our offense--whereas Notre Dame is brilliant at using picks to get layups. This is another obvious weakness in our offense.

4) DeShields has been a bit underwhelming. I expected a bit more from her. She has been good in a couple of games, but generally a bit spotty. Had a weak game tonight. I'm sure her legs are one issue and our CRAP offense (have I mentioned that?) is another issue--but don't feel like we're getting the Full DeShields at this point.

5) We need to get Nared healthy and see what she and Middleton can do, I think. We have to find a guard who can make outside shots. If not, then we probably should play a bigger rather than a smaller lineup--with Carter at PG and DeShields at the 2, with Graves, Nared and Russell. That might be a nice lineup down the road--but it will take Nared a while to get in a groove--though of course nobody gets in a groove on this team. Still, we are playing guards that are consistent net negative contributors, and that has to change.

In addition to the many good points made above, I really think the coaching staff needs to address Cooper's shooting mechanics now before it's too late. I'm afraid that ship has already sailed for Reynolds.

Russell is like the second coming of Kelley Cain. Tall, slow, terrible hands, poor basketball IQ, and lack of fire. Hopefully Lockwood can make some improvements with her, but I'm not holding my breath. We need to scour the JUCO's to find some posts who are hungry for some Div I competition.

I hope DD proves to be the answer. I agree she's been underwhelming so far, but then again, I thought she was only the third best player in her class at UNC. She also needs to be our vocal on-floor leader, but I haven't seen much of that so far. Time will tell.

Thank God for Graves, Carter, and the officials tonight or we'd be adding another L to our tally.

LORD knows that I tried. I did try, to remain silent. to not think or comment negatively toward Holly and her clueless assistants.

I failed! I just can't overlook anymore...

Holly said in the post game interview that maybe this team gained some confidence with their outside shot with this game. She evidently has no idea what she just watched. I'm speechless after this game tonight. She acted like we just beat a top 5 team on the road. We are in TROUBLE..............

She was excited during her post game interview. Making insane statements about Wichita State being well coached, as if that was an excuse for her lack luster coaching. At this point she is delusional. Was she out coached? Once again the answer is yes.

At this point Holly needs to have some pride and resign because what she has now is a huge dumpster fire. Those of you hoping for a huge turn around because of 17&18 recruiting that is a pipe dream and not reality.

I have so much trouble focusing on your posts. I felt the same way at first but it seemed like she got better last year but it might just have been the seniors effect. Now that she has a bunch of freshman and sophomores-trouble.

It all boils down to the HC just like a CEO of a company. Can't blame anyone else in the organization but the person on top. Everyone does what the HC says to do.

Holly said" I think this game was exciting for people to watch" Exciting for who?

Lol!!! I agree. 20 turnovers with 5 or less assists is disastrous! Comments like these lead me to believe she have the slightest idea of what she's doing. Oregon State and Stanford are going to kill us. I think the Oregon State game is a sell out.

If only anyone else had predicted this collapse was coming.

Uh, no. Urban is a total a-hole, great coach. Holly is the complete opposite. They couldn't be more different...

Why the hell can't Carter have that mindset every game on offense???

Because Holly want her to just play defense and pass the ball which is just crazy. Carter has offensive skills but under Holly they are hidden.

I've been defending Carter for a while. She brings solid defense EVERY game and she USUALLY brings enough to the offense in terms of good shooting %, low turnovers, and running the point. Some seem to want to gripe that she doesn't put up 20 points every night, but in that poor offensive scheme, it's hard for anyone to excel unfortunately.

I think getting Nared back and healthy is key, She hit`s the glass on both ends of the court and can hit the 3. Move DeShields back out to the 2 bacause Nared is better on the glass.

The D stinks as bad as the O now. They have very little urgency and attacking style to the D. They play like they are in zone when they are in man. The O is the same song, 5th verse now. She did have them come out of the double post for a time, but most of the time they would stand around and the pass the ball on the outside when they did. Occasionally they would try to dump it low to Graves. Sickening to watch. Heading for a 10+ loss season if it continues this way.

Two or three years ago I would have thought the same thing but unfortunately I can't remember one instant where a player has been out with injury and then came back and really helped us. Even worse, Nared is a Sophomore so she's still developing under ideal conditions.

I do agree with the premise - we need a player like Nared who can step up and play to that ability. I think Dunbar should be getting a better chance and more minutes in games. She still has the best 3 point % and she gets a couple of garbage minutes and pulled while the rest of the team is allowed to throw the ball away 20 times and shoot 8% from the 3 point line.

Last night Carter was horrible on defense in the first half. They drove by her several times and at one point she was a good 10 feet away from the person she was guarding and had no clue where she was. Thankfully she was much better in the second half. I would like to know who's idea it was to clear the right side of the lane and have her drive to the bucket near the end. I bet it wasn't Holly's idea.

Gee, no one else has said anything like that. Please post that again a few times to make sure we get it.

I very much enjoyed it. Both teams played hard. The arena was loud. It was great.

My advice is to take what positives you can and enjoy the ride. Forget the negative.

How dare you disrupt this masochistic marathon. This win was worse than a loss because expectations. Remember every silver lining has a dark cloud and you can drown in a glass that is half full. Did I mention we are doomed, DOOMED, DOOMED and that is the GOOD NEWS!

Any updates on when Nared will be back? i would love to see her inserted into the starting lineup and Reynolds moves to the bench.

I hear them talk about defense more than offense,i hardly ever hear offense been talked about. A well organized team will have balance between offensive and defensive plays, inside and perimeter plays, ball side and offside plays.
