Game Thread: Lady Vols host Vandy ; Sunday Jan 21, 3PM; SEC Network ;...Win 73-64

Sometimes announcers will not comment on serious situations or show a replay on a gruesome injury.

The announcers were aware she wasn’t on the floor, imo, but most likely told not to comment. Just my opinion.
Well I'm glad the cameras didn't linger bc she was really struggling then really upset. But you would have thought they would have at least mentioned it? I haven't watched the replay yet, surely to God they acknowledged she wasn't playing?

Glv98, I agree about Tamari. To my eye, she's playing the best offense of her career right now, dramatically improving Tennessee's chances of success going forward.

I think we saw a little of that NOMFW attitude today, and if they keep bringing that they'll be fun to watch as they get better and better each game.

I am super proud of them getting the tough win today. As we all know, way too often in the last ten or so years the Lady Vols have seemed more often than not to lose significant milestone games, or special Pat games, or games when alumni are there, etc.

Gotta love that Tennessee is currently 2nd in the SEC. Ain't no shame in being sevond to that South Carolina squad, for sure. I don't know if they'll be beaten at all this season.

Hopefully Rickea will bounce back quickly. We need both Kea and Tamari ready to finish the season strong.

Had she come public it would have taken away from the team or it could have been her last season. She got a victory lap year but it wasn’t like others who announce their retirement early.
I don't agree with @Majors on most things Lady Vols. However, I attended the 2012 SEC Tournament and witnessed first hand some of the difficulties Coach Summitt was experiencing.

During the championship game, Coach Warlick was standing and instructing the team. On several occasions, Coach Summitt suddenly remembered something she wanted to impart and would get up and begin calling out instruction. Coach Warlick would sit and encourage Coach Summitt. Brokened hearted, I acknowledge that night, change was imminent.

It’s hard to forget those moments. A woman a greatness needing help. And for that reason is why I state, Holly was the right coach for the unique moment.

I don't think we're that far off in this discussion, but 2010-2011 was a dang good year, and I still believe Summitt was in pretty good shape and calling 90% or more of the shots that year.

What happened to her happened shockingly fast.
I went to a book signing for Pat’s last book. She was still coaching but maybe her last year and it was frankly heartbreaking. There is no way she was able to participate in coaching at that time and seemingly for many months before that.
She was in a room with a handler, you went in one at a time. She signed the book but her eyes were just unfocused and her only response to anything said was “is that right?”
It was so upsetting and so uncalled for. Whoever set that up should regret that everyday.

We are top 25 in RPI, POWER RANKING, and BPI could be top 20 in all by tomorrow

We are top 15 in SOS (14th)

Hopefully we can be on the closer to 40 side of NET (which hates us lol)

All of our goals are ahead of us (yes that includes hosting but we’ll need a big win or two)
Update! 10th now in SOS and 9th in SOR!!!

Depends on the source but top 15 for sure on both

It was mentioned at least 3 times in the last quarter and a half.

Thank you! Just scanning through this thread I kept reading that the announcers never mentioned she was gone. That was just too bizarre to imagine.

Man she was having such a great game, not just scoring but rebounding, steals, some really good D. Tough break to not get to finish that out. Sure hope she's ok.

Me too. I can only imagine how worried friends, family, and viewers would’ve been had they shown. Someone posted that they saw her bending over. I’m not sure I’d it es son tv or the poster was at game.

I know a couple of folks who are subcontracted cameramen for the NFL, Collegiate sports, etc @ ABC. ESPN, CBS.

They’re told when and where to place the cameras (or not) so that may be the case.

Idk for sure if it was announced as I was watching the Lions/Bucs game but later read the game thread.

According to the posts, there wasn’t any conversation so…. but idk for sure.

Glad she is okay and you enjoyed the game.

Godspeed!

I hate to read this as my grandmother and aunt has this awful disease. Plus I have customers who visit me w their family and ask the same question over and over. And as you said, there is a look in the individual’s eye….. horrible disease.

It has stayed with me and stayed with me in great detail. I remember where she was sitting and the very specific things I mentioned to her regarding a championship I attended. It was just so soul crushing. I will never forget it.

When you've experienced it personally with a parent, family member or a close friend, you understand so much more, you learn the virtue of patience, and the value of earlier times.
Maybe she, in some small way, was coaching you.
Go Purple.

I think she could help rebound a lot more she doesn't like contact. I think 3 rebounds today might be her high for the season in a game. She is averaging 1.9

Vandy shot 24 threes. That's a lot of long rebounds. They did make nine of them

We were 4 for 15 from three range.

I was appalled like so many at the officiating. The one thing that they didn't get wrong is abide to the cylinder rule regarding to not calling charges with contact by the offensive player within the cylinder. I learned by a fan responding to my booing the call who said that they took away the cylinder rule for NCAAW this year, though it remains for the NCAAM. I had to confirm this when I got home, and this is correct. Below is the link:

NCAA women basketball restricted area for charges - Google Search
Posted on page 12, but here is the language directly from the 2023-24/2024-25 WBB Rule book:

RULE 4 / DEFINITIONS 51
Section 26. Restricted Area
The restricted area is defined as the area directly underneath the basket. A
defender is considered to be in the restricted area when any part of either foot is
in or above this area, or when the defender is straddling the area.

So, a restricted area does exist. It's smaller and not as defined as previously, allowing for a lot of referee "discretion" in the application.

Child please

I just noticed you took a post when I was talking about some plays made by JP as the starting PG coming out in the 2nd half and forcing some plays against MISS State to make it look like I said it during todays game. Man that’s a fraud move..
Like I told the other NVs Vandy PG couldn’t guard Spear or Powell that was a mismatch!
Powell ran them folks off the court.
Spear once again hit a dagger three to change the game in TN favor!
Lets GBO🍊

NV gonna NV…once you cross over, you’re there. I don’t make the rules…I just call out the hypocrites.

I'm surprised that she got booed "profusely" as she was only here 1 season and played very little. What is there to boo about--transferring in this day and age? Silly. I could see booing a really good player who transferred to a rival, but that's not the case here.
What are the fans talking about when they say Justine disrespected Kellie Harper in the shake hands line. I re-ran the recording several times to see the two approach each other. Justine high-fived Kellie just like the other Vandy players and then walked away to the dressing room. I don't see anything wrong with that. I think you're trying to make something out of nothing.
In addition, I think Justine got a raw deal from Tennessee during last season. Kellie should have played her more. I don't blame her for leaving. Whether it was her choice or Kellie's I don't know. Her game has obviously improved while at Vanderbilt and it could have improved just the same if she had stayed at UT.
In regards to the booing of Justine by the student section, UT runs a recorded message prior to every game stating that unsportsmanlike conduct by fans will not be tolerated and violators will be ejected. They need to take that to heart. The students are also guilty of saying the opposing players "suck" when each one is introduced before the game. They also do this before the volleyball matches. Apparently they think that's funny. I do not and find it embarrassing for all involved. I sit right next to the student section so I know what goes on. As I said before, UT needs to put into practice what they preach.

You seriously need an attitude adjustment. That is not my idea of fun. And like another poster stated, Justine only played here one year. Give the girl a break.

Who recruited those players for Pat?

How is it a rebuild when we hear about CKH having 3 first round draft picks she didn’t recruit.
We remember what happened against Vanderbilt the last time Holly coached against them at Thompson bowling arena in 2019 in our 8th place SEC finish. Do you think Holly would have had three first round draft picks in a row had she coached them? I think not. As the program was imploding we got the Kamera Harris, Emily Saunders and Jessie Rennie's who hardly fit top tier D-1 programs. I would have imagined Evina Westbrook and Mimi Collins stock probably would have raised as well had they stayed and played under Kelly Harper. Rennia Davis and Ray burrell's draft were both much higher than what they were ranked out of high school. Heck Rae Burrell was ranked number 47 and hadn't had the same coach 2 years in a row the four years previous to Tennessee and hardly saw the court under Holly due to her ranking her freshman year. I wonder how Tamari would have developed under Holly considering how Mercedes Russell was coached to play defense with her hands at her shoulders throughout her time at Tennessee at 6 foot 7. I doubt Tamari would be the top shot blocker in Lady Vol history.
