Game Thread Lady Vols vs Auburn

Then you changed WHAT I said and your response is invalid. So according to your WHO IS ranked then we have beat three ranked teams OSU, TX, Stanford! Soooo it’s more than the 2.5 you wanted to give them 😂 Again, whomp! Now I can see why everybody thinks you’re a clown on this site and true Lady Vol fans who have followed not only Holly’s career but the program know that !

Do us all a favor and delete your account... Which is probably one of the nicer things people say to you on a daily basis.

Stanford is ranked in one poll, unranked in another. So depending on which poll you look at Tennessee has either beaten 2 or 3 ranked teams (hence 2.5).

I'm not sure why you're spewing so much venom. I don't blame Holly for playing a lighter schedule with so many freshmen on the roster. It's also not Holly's fault that Stanford, which is usually an elite team, isn't that great this year....

Glad we won but man oh man - 28 turnovers?! 8 Lady Vol players played. 4 were players who have played for the Lady Vols before (Nared, Russell, Jackson, and Dunbar). Let's call them "veterans". 4 were players in their first year with Tennessee - Westbrook, Davis, Green, and Hayes. We'll call them "rookies".

The veterans committed 7 turnovers. The rookies committed 21 with Davis leading the pack @ 9. Suffice to say, they escaped tonight, but 9 times out of 10 a ranked team will bury them if they repeat it IMO. Hope they clean it up.

At the time Stanford was ranked much higher.

Troll forward ... Obei Wan Konobee, or is it "Luke, I'm your Father"

What a winner.
:eek:lol:

Yet, they’re 2-0 and having beat two teams (one of which was ranked in the top 15) which had two of the best records in their league?

You don’t blame Holly but you’re making a joke about the schedule? Ah ok gotcha!

As far as venom just giving you back some of the negativity you are continually known for. Wanna hear a different song then change your own tune first!

With that being said. I hope you have a blessed evening and hope you enjoy the LV being 14-0 !

Go Lady Vols !

Evina in the press conference: “we played terrible.”
Respect her for saying that. She clearly is already a confident player as a freshman, even with mistakes. She made big shots

I like that attitude! Too often I have thought our players were too nice! These Auburn girls were in the faces of our players and yelling and screaming and our players kept their cool! I went and read the postgame quote she and Auburn’s players take after their coach. They were brash and bold in their answers but Evina was assertive in hers as well and the difference is she can claim a win and grow from this experiece.

I am glad this game was a struggle. Auburn brought a level aggressiveness that had been characteristic of Mitchell's better KY. teams. [It is an interesting strategy of playing so aggressively and hacking so much that refs start to see as a normal and only calls foul in the case of undeniable assault and battery, and even then sometimes they miss it].

So our freshman got rattled and the team made a number of errors that came from feeling pressed and rushed. Hayes was particularly awful in the first half when she spelled the struggling Westbrook. But, Hayes got better as the game went on and actually made a huge positive difference in the 4th quarter. That is a quick learning curve.

Both she and Westbrook are going to get better at handling pressure. In this game, they made some mistakes that allowed Auburn's pressure to be more effective than it should have been (picking up their dribble too early; turning into double teams when a clear lane was available and going for the highlight reel pass rather than the safe option). Again, they cut down considerably on those errors in the 4th quarter come clutch time.

And here is the thing. This team is clutch and does not crack under pressure. Westbrook was an assassin down the stretch and Nared was all over the court making plays on both ends. And Mercedes defended the paint very well when the game was on the line.

While I agree that they need to quickly clean up the TO problem before facing the cream of the SEC, this group also has that intangible "it" factor that is really enjoyable to watch.

Jamie can’t keep playing 40 minuets. She needs to rest

Jaime gets rest.

Time outs - Half time - Stoppage in plays

Consider that she's a senior. Also after two years of playing on LV squads where they lost to teams like Auburn, Alabama and LSU and not even reaching the S16. Nothing but disappointment and she couldn't be the *star player because of Diamond.

Now new season and more responsibility. Besides this is Jaime's last go round. She wants to play to win.

It's only 40 minutes with breaks.

She'll be alright. No need to fret.

GLVs!:)

Plus, Jamie has had games and will have future games this season where she only plays 25 minutes because the LVs are winning big. In the close games, she should never come off the floor barring foul trouble.

Yeah I hadn't thought about that. It's not as if Jaime is playing every single game for 40 minutes.

Thanks!

Kudos to the team for the gritty win. Even though it wasn’t the toughest opponent we will face this season, it was a challenge, and I think last year’s team would have lost this game!

Moving Westbrook to the two, money! Now, how about that coaching decision.

I back Pat and roll with Holly.

Great post. Its nice to see Lady Vols basketball. Glad to see someone else wasn't worried and understands player progression. I thought this was a perfect game before the gauntlet.

Defense, Rebounding and Good Guard play win Championships and Big Games.

Do you say that about Geno’s six player rotations when he is winning by 50 and still only plays six? We are good with putting whoever is going to help us win on the floor KKs time will come... Dunbar will get spot time later on as far as Harris ,well, working on her offensive game could help afford her time next year with Russell gone.

Yes. I do. Score doesn't determine who plays for Geno and everyone knows that. UConn players are actually chastised if caught looking at the scoreboard. His trust in their abilities to play at the same level of the person they replaced on the floor and their overall effort in practice determines if they play or not and nothing else, which actually probably makes it pretty easy to figure out why you aren't getting playing time. I would gather Holly felt the same about who she chose to play last night.

I'm sure she wishes she could trust the others to get them more minutes in this game just like Geno does (he recently stated his last 2 recruiting classes haven't progressed as fast as he would like) but as I stated it just wasn't meant to be last night. Geno isn't a unicorn. Aston has done the same recently with Boothe. Sometimes kids just aren't ready night in and night out and that's okay. I wasn't slighting her, just making an observation. She made the right call for the opponent and what she feels she has right now. The next time they play Auburn she could feel completely different.

When our opponents up the tempo, that takes the ball out of MR hands. Her game (any true centers game) isn’t high tempo. Don’t expect MR to be our leading scorer when the we see a defense most of the game full court pressing us. It turns into a guard/wing game.

Completely agree with your points,Madtown, especially the one about the aggressive, hacking, clawing defense. Too often,in games when teams play this kind of defense, the officials seem to decide that there are so many fouls that they can't call them all and thus the game becomes more chaotic and even fewer calls are made. Last night was certainly an example of this as some muggings occurred with no calls made. Also,my thought was that Auburn was allowed to try to intimidate the Lady Vols with a lot of trash talk. Our Lady Vols kept their poise and answered the taunts in the best way possible by winning the game. As Westbrook said, they played terrible, but they won. This is what good teams do--find a way to win. As others have posted,Jaime and Mercedes provided great leadership and great play to help the team overcome the lackluster play, and Evina and Annie stepped up after being down early. A lesson learned by our younger players in overcoming adversity and gaining a win will be invaluable to the team.

Makes me think about next years starting 5.
Annie & Evina in the backcourt
Zay will probably start at 3? Or maybe Rennia at 3 instead.

I got to see most of this game streaming.
My takeaways:
-We need to take better care of the ball.
-Mercedes needs to demand the ball in the paint
-run a play or two for Rennia, so it can boost her confidence, I can tell she gets down on herself
(Love her rebounding)
-Give Green more minutes!

so does Russell. She missed several shots last night, although she does get mugged on every attempt.

There are teams you can push the ball against and ones where you have to play with patience. We were not patient against their press always trying to make an exceptional pass that was well defended.
If we can go 3 and 2 in the next five would consider that a success. We'll be playing teams ranks 2, 3, and 5 plus Texas A&M at their place. Three tough road games before meeting Miss St at home.
