Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs LSU; Thurs Jan 9th ; Home game; 6:30 PM Eastern; SEC+ stream

Do you anticipate Spear's +/- to begin to be positive throughout SEC play at some point? Again, 5 games against power conference teams, and Tennessee is -42 points differential when she's on the court, and +63 when she's off the court. I don't see any reason why the sample size isn't sufficient to start to make conclusions. She should be playing fewer minutes, at a minimum.
Nothing else plus/minus shows how a team plays offense/Defense as a team.
Doesn't matter if a player scores twenty ever night.
If they give up more than they score as a team.
Maybe that player is in with the wrong group.
Or minus players are the problem.
Its up to the coaches to put right groups together.
All players are new to the coaches and the players new the system.

Good point. As soon as the dribbler starts to approach the foul line area, you foul, then force another inbounds set with less time.
All around awful defense on the last possession. You do not allow the point guard to get all the way to the basket like that. The point defender did a good job, but there should have been some help, quick feet and some alertness should have produced an offensive foul on LSU. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. Lady Vols can run and they can press, but they have to improve their half-court defensive fundamentals.
Or Basketball IQ

I hate this team lost another close one especially to teams they could have very easily have beaten. However, these ladies never quit and play hard until the end and at least put themselves in a position to win .. yes, shots don’t fall sometimes when we want them to and yes, rebounding needs to improve , but I like this team’s tenacity , grit and fight .. remember, this team had to buy into what coach Caldwell and her system of play would bring to this season .. And they have!! 13-2 and only losses are to #10 and #6 ranked teams in the nation ( by one point and two points )! I’ll take that over last years season any time! Good things are brewing in Knoxville with the Lady Vols !! Keep your head up ladies !! On to the next game ! 🏀💪🏼🧡
Not only do the players have to learn but the head coach needs to learn.

This was a great game. As bad as the last moment felt, we actually hung in there with LSU and outscored them in three quarters. They were in their A game, with Gilbert raising their level to a Final 4 like team. I perceived our half-court defense to have been much better than the OU game, though it clearly is a work in progress. LSU will always dominate the paint points and rebounding against anyone not named South Carolina. Many of their made shots were due to their skill and not our horrible defense, unlike the OU game. I don't think we will have great half-court defense against the best teams until we have better bigs. WE really don't have an answer for defending the best ones in the conference. I hope this is where we are successful in the portal.

For those of us who thought that this was a rebuilding year rather than a championship year, the loss isn't devastating at all. It actually shows we do not have far to go in the rebuilding process. I doubt that this game will hurt us in the rankings, and we will still be on course to host the first two rounds of the NCAAs if we continue to improve. For perspective, we had Rickea last year and we still lost to LSU by 15 points. We are headed in a good direction.

Despite my rather sunny perspective, I am getting fed up that each game we start with almost all three point shots, including from players who just aren't good at it. The beginning of big games is when teams are often the tightest, so it is doubtful that this is a time that our poor three point shooters will suddenly start making them. Just say no!

To lose the last 2 games, by 1 point and then the next game by 2 points, is........

Still thinking 5 games is a big enough sample size to make judgments using +/- tells me you don’t actually care about understanding that stat

Why not? The Lady Vols, in Spear's minutes, are 0-5 against Power competition. If it wasn't for greatly positive play when Spear is off the court, most fans would have already happily come to the conclusion that Caldwell's system can't beat power conference teams, when the actual reality is that Spear is apparently one-dimensional player who can shoot 3s, but does not get offensive rebounds, does not play defense well, and likely [though it would take some film review focused on her to conclude] accomplishes little to set up her teammates to score on the possessions that don't end with a made Spear 3, which is still a single digit number of possessions per game.

And, though the Lady Vols + Spear are 0-5 (-42 differential), meanwhile the Lady Vols without Spear on the court are 5-0 (+63 differential) with 2 wins against nationally highly ranked teams, and 2 blowouts against Iowa and A&M, and a double digit win against FSU. That seems meaningful, and it would be more than enough to make conclusions on. ["Caldwell's system can't win" in one reality vs "We're winning the natty boys!" in the other]

Instead, fans are looking at 3-2 in that stretch and some are confused about whether we're legit or not, when a real issue is that a player who is net negative is playing 30 minutes a game, because coach (and the fans) are only looking at her 3P% rate and nothing else.

Oh, also, Spear was the only player who had a negative +/- against Liberty. So Spear, in a +/- sense, is 5-6 in games she's participated in. [unclear about the Richmond game because those stats didn't survive]

And 4 of her wins are against very weak teams; vs. MTSU is the only game she participated in against a team with a pulse where she ended up positiv.

we have lost 2 games by 3 points. we are exceeding expectations in major way as a program in all areas. this very team has a great chance of making huge waves if they continue to focus on learning the system. don't forget, this system is still very new and VERY new against top teams. i am proud of their fight tonight and believe in them.

I have a winners mentality, because I hate losing. When u lose certain games it shows who u are. This is a middle of the pack Sec team. I’ve waited a while before I gave my assessment and now I have a good feel on who this team is.

I, too, am a competitor, but this is silly. It's one thing to say you "hate losing" and another to get all pissy and defeatist in the middle of the damn season after losing to two top ten teams on last second shots. A true winner realizes this is the early part of January and there are more games to play and win, which is what we intend to do.

You want to get all mopey and say this is a middle of the road team, give up, then fine. But, don't pretend you're some kind of winner. That's simply quitting and I used to eat pouty chumps like this for lunch back when I had the tools to do so.

Love Coach Kim she gets it. Remember when she said it would be ugly in November well we just ran through non conference and we didn't get a chance to learn from mistakes because we kept winning. We'll against 2 really good teams we lost by total of 3 points by getting beat down early because the team has to learn little things like rebounding and taking care of ball again learning moments. Now if team learns lessons this season will end very well at what round in tournament who knows maybe elite 8 or final 4 . I believe we are few players away especially in post but if many of you are to blind to see we're Coach has us going in future as she increases talent on this team then you are not paying attention to her press conference and watching the good on the floor. In CHRIST Alone

We had fouls to waste. Not smart enough to waste them.

We had fouls to give at the end. I wish we would’ve made Gilbert or any other LSU player earn it at the line. I didn’t have faith in our half court defense getting a stop.

Three fouls to give and they have no timeouts?!!! We gotta recognize stuff like that. Otherwise, very good game by the Lady Vols! Definitely top 10 team! No doubt about it after these last two games.

Their last possession began with 0:22 to go. We definitely should’ve wasted the fouls we had to give starting with about 6-7 seconds left, to shorten their last play setup. Not a shooting foul, but on the floor before she started her drive.
Anyway, proud of the team & very optimistic about what CKC has doing.

I am again excited to watch our Lady Vols Basketball team!

I believe the LV's had two fouls to give and should have fouled her on her move to the basket and make them take it out of bounds again.
You never give a team the last shot in a close game,,,never
22 to go, foul twice takes about 2-4 seconds and then foul with 10+ to give yourself a shot to win.

Never go home with fouls to give in your pocket on a close game,,,Never
