Game Thread Lady Vols vs South Carolina

We were leading in the first half until DD came into the game. We regained the lead in the second half and then lost it when DD came into the game and never regained it. Take it for what you will. Some players are great and make their teammates better. Some players are great and are a cancer on their team.

I'm actively rooting for Diamond to leave the team at the end of the season. First, she is wasting her college career playing for a poor coach and subpar teammates. Second, to give fans who think she's a cancer to the team a dose of reality: Tennessee is not a tournament team without her.

I feel the same way and never thought I would about our own but people seem to keep giving Holly a pass

Maybe so but it is obvious she can't coach. Probably 80% of the teams we've faced this year have better coaches.

Well, I wasn't all that impressed tonight with Staley's coaching either: the TV announcers mentioned it like 20 times during the game - Alaina Coates is leading the entire WCBB in FG %, but she only takes one single shot attempt, and it came halfway through the 4th and final quarter.

What coach would do that with such an efficient scorer? It's not like Coates only takes 2-3 attempts per game, or is last on the bench. She's a regular starter, and is 3rd on the team in ppg. If I was coach, I would have taken 2-3 timeouts just to yell and scream at my team to get the ball to Coates, as much as they get it to anyone else. I mean, help her to be an offensive factor. So I was surprised to see that.

Coates did have 8 rebounds or something like that, but it was almost like Dawn Staley deliberately tried to play with one hand tied behind the back, with the way she cut out Coates being any kind of offensive factor tonight....

As much as she is hot/cold.....UT would be absolutely terrible without her

What is it about Diamond that infatuates you so? Is it the 30% shooting or all the turnovers? Or is it the petulance and haughty attitude? Yeah, she must be good.

C'mon-- you guys don't really want to see the team get worse. The solution is to find ways to better utilize our talented players for the good of the team-- not have players we need go elsewhere.

But things aren't going to change until we make them change.

And that's all better than Cooper, Carter, Nared and Reynolds.

Diamond's not the problem.

I think a really good coach could probably rein DD in. Someone like Luigi or Brenda. But, it is going to take a tough coach.

I really hate this for Holly. She really cares for these players, UT and the game. It must be hard to come to terms that she is not a head coach. I hope she makes the correct decision and step down or maybe move back to an assistant role. I agree we need to make a change but please remember she is a human being that is given her all to Tennessee.

How much CHW "has given" to UT and how much "passion" she has for the program are meaningless.

In fact, she's enjoyed a cushy job since she graduated and earned good money. For the last few years she's earned about a half-mill/year. She's not "given" anything...not even good job performance.

She is in the sense that Holly's not the coach for her. She cannot be on a Holly coached team. Will take a special coach to coach DD. This team would be much better without her.

Yeah, really don't understand all the coach worship. Why put the program second after the coach? Doesn't make sense.

I really hate for us to wait so long that the team will be in rebuilding mode for the next coach. I think there are coaches that could take the talent on this team and turn them into a top five team. The way we are recruiting we could be at the bottom of the SEC soon.

Our coaches don't seem to be able to get the best out of any of these players-- not just DD. When you're teeing up the worst season in program history with 7 McD's AAs at your disposal, there's a problem. The common denominator-- the HC. I would still like to see how far this team can go in the post-season.

I'm not wishing bad on Holly or the team, but I would like to see Holly let Elzy run the team again and watch how her team plays harder for Elzy than they do for her.

I disagree. Our guard play is terrible. I have no idea what Carter envisions when she has the ball. If we ran an offense and had structure this team would look totally different. I bet the Lady Vols would also have 5 or less losses. There is no structure or plan on offense. Stephanie White and Sue Bird saw the same thing when they commentated Tennessee's games. These players are use to winning and I know frustration has set in. Coaching is the main problem.

Take Diamond off the team, and who's gonna score points? Carter? Reynolds? Nared? Good luck with that.

She's been inconsistent this year, but she's still light years better than any of the other players besides Graves (who's gone after this year) and Russell (who would benefit from having guards that know how to pass to her).

I just think it's ridiculous how some always seem to give passes to the other players while DeShields is the one getting all the blame. my goodness she gets bashed for what everyone else is also doing.

They were leading before DD came into the game. The regained the lead early in the second half and then DD came in. When she's in the game the offense becomes dysfunctional. It is either her or nothing.

DD is a good street ball player. She is one of those players if you watch a pick up game everyone goes oooooh!, aaaaaah! But, then when she's on a real team they lose.

They were leading because SC played their worst half of bball all season. Once Wilson got hot, and Mitchell had her little spurt, it was game over. That had nothing to do with Diamond.

Look at the boxscore and you see how the rest of the backcourt contributed nothing to this game. Andraya went 35 minutes without a field goal. Jaime even longer.

As long as Andraya and Jordan are playing the kind of minutes they've been playing, this team is going nowhere. They are not a championship-team caliber backcourt.

you think this team is "much better" without Diamond? let's see...the score tonight without Diamond's 21pts (SC 62, TN 35). Diamond shot 41% from the field (7/17), Graves (33% - 2/6), Russell (25% - 2/8), Nared (33% - 1/3), Carter (20% - 1/5), Cooper (33% - 2/6), Reynolds (25% - 1/4), Moore (a whopping 66% on 2/4 shooting, in 6 minutes). I say Diamond needs to keep shooting until she finds her rhythm. Having sat out a year, she's still getting back into form. Without Diamond, this team would have been ranked about 50 already in all polls. I agree with you on one point: Holly's not the coach for her. Is Holly the coach for anyone? Not this team. I'm not a huge fan of Nia Moore, but she did have 4pts in 6 minutes, while Russell had 5pts in 37 minutes. Shouldn't the coach (Holly) have realized that she wasn't getting much out of Russell and tried something different? Holly keeps doing the same thing and expecting different results. Hand this same team of young lady's over to a good coach and it's a national title contender. In Holly's hands, they're just ordinary. May as well get rid of Lockwood too. When was the last time he developed a post player????
