Game Thread Lady Vols vs South Carolina

This team has the worst basketball IQ of any Lady Vol team I have ever seen, and I've been watching and bleeding orange for 30 years. Absolutely no sense of time and score. Cases in point: Reynolds 3-pointer at the end of the first half; Cooper picking up 3rd foul in the backcourt; Deshields picking up 3rd foul on the sideline 40 feet from the basket...etc...etc...etc. Boggles the mind !

If Diamond does transfer, does she have to sit out another year?? I just don't see her wanting to sit another year..Maybe she does go pro....

Not if she's on pace to graduate this year. Then she could leave UT as a graduate transfer and immediately play for someone next season with 2 years of eligibility left. She would be in the same situation as Notre Dame's transferring center Taya Reimer.

You have to actually graduate to not sit a year. I don't think she would be able to do that.

Would someone post why the technical was called? We were at the game and have no idea. Did not tape the game so no way to check a replay. Thanks.

I wonder if the players have just written this season off? We have four more games and the post-season. We have the talent to hang with anyone... but is there any drive or will left? I thought so after last week, but now...

I remember Holly making a comment a couple of years ago and looking back on it, it really underscores why this team is so inept on offense. She said something to the effect of players coming out of high school are really mainly focused on their offensive game and much less focused on the defensive part of it and she has to spend most of her time teaching them how to play defense. Makes me wonder if she just doesn't even bother coaching any kind of offensive scheme or plays and just sticks with defense. She's already admitted a few times that they don't even practice any kind of offense.

Back in 2001, when Jim Foster's Vanderbilt team upended the Lady Vols in the SEC tournament, Pat was very vocal about the defensive intensity and effort of the team. She was livid, she was furious, all that -- and she was on the radio saying they were going to work on their defense and be ready for the NCAA tournament. I remember this because some of my coaching friends commented on how she might ought to spend some time working on the offensive game too. Well, anyway, to shorten the story a bit, UT went into the tournament and Xavier shot them off the floor in the regional finals. I think they had a spot there where they went something like 6-20 or 6-21 shooting in the second half. It was the worst exit Tennessee had faced in decades. And I mention this because, well, it's always been about defense (to a fault?) with Tennessee. It's served the program well for a long time, (that 2004-2005 year where they made it to the FF was a great example of the program's mentality willing it to success -- well, that and the annoying realization that Pat would have had 9 had Parker not been out that year).

Anyway, I say all this because there's always been a focus on defense. For better, and for worse. Our offense has not looked exemplary in quite some time.

So if what 1908 said is true and a couple of underclassmen are planning on transferring, and assuming Jasmine Jones doesn't plan on playing anymore, doesn't that put them down to 7 on the roster next year?? Wow, Holly is ****ed..She might just want to resign to avoid that kind of embarrassment. You strike out with no recruits, PLUS you lose two transfers..ouch

I think the players have lost confidence and are frustrated with what they are being told to do.

I thought a player was eligible for the WNBA in the calendar year of their 22nd birthday. Can anyone confirm this?

They have to be or turn 21 by the end of the season for which they are drafted so Diamond would have to wait one more year. She could go overseas and then come in the year after next with the pro experience already

That is his real account, I follow him on twitter. That's the first I've seen him unload on holly like that, not that she doesn't deserve it. he makes good points, which is what a bunch of us have already noticed for awhile now and it's also what the recruits are noticing

What is he saying?

her 21th bday is march 5th. born in 95

These players are been failed by the coaching staff. just awful. they can't figure out players strengths and weaknesses, coach can't make adjustments, players don't know their role. it's actually sad watching them look lost and confused on the floor. this season has been painful and hard to watch.

looks like she is eligible this year

I got it wrong sorry, she has to be 22, I have found the rules and are listing them below;

WNBA DRAFT Eligibility

A player is eligible to be selected in the Draft at the earliest occurrence of the following: A. She had (or will have) her 22nd
birthday during the calendar year in which the draft is held, and she
either has no remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces her
remaining intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the WNBA at
least ten days prior to such draft. B. She has graduated from a
four-year college or university, or “is to graduate” from such college
or university during the three-month period following such draft and
she either has no remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces
her remaining intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the
WNBA at least ten days prior to such draft. For the purpose of this
subsection B, “is to graduate” means that such player would graduate
from the college or university she is currently enrolled in if she
were to successfully complete the coursework she is enrolled in at the
time of such draft and such course load is commensurate with previous
course loads she has successfully completed. C. She attended a
four-year college or university, her original class in such college or
university has already been graduated or “is to graduate” during the
three-month period following such draft, and she either has no
remaining intercollegiate eligibility or renounces her remaining
intercollegiate eligibility by written notice to the WNBA at least ten
days prior to such draft. For the purpose of this subsection C, “is
to graduate” means that the majority of the students in such class
would graduate from such college or university upon successful
completion of the coursework the members of such class are enrolled in
at the time of such draft. D. She is an international player (meaning a
player who was born and resides outside of the United States) who has
had (or will have) her 20th birthday during the calendar year in which
the draft is held. E. The league will circulate a list of any otherwise
eligible players who renounce their remaining intercollegiate
eligibility on April 4. Please note that a player who: (i) is
competing in the NCAA tournament during the period that begins ten
days prior to the draft; (ii) has remaining intercollegiate
eligibility beyond the 2010-11 season; and (iii) is otherwise eligible
for the draft, may make herself eligible for the draft by renouncing
her remaining intercollegiate eligibility within the period beginning
at the conclusion of her final NCAA game and ending twenty-four hours
thereafter. If any such players still playing on April 4 renounce
their remaining intercollegiate eligibility, we will circulate a
second eligibility e-mail as soon as we receive written confirmation
of the renouncement.

Guthridge knew what he was doing, but he was old and not the guy to lead the program long-term and so UNC smartly moved on. I believe Guthridge got one of his UNC teams to the Final Four.

That's right, and UNC replaced Guthridge with Matt Doherty, who went 53-43 at UNC in 3 years and who is universally regarded by Tarheel fans as the worst HC of their MBB program in....forever.

So be careful what you wish for, calling Warlick Holly Dooley and all. Could be she's really Holly Kiffin, and you end up replacing her with the real Dooley.....

:)

Our starters combined for 8 field goals in 145 minutes of action!

Diamond had 7 field goals in 24 minutes.

We were leading in the first half until DD came into the game. We regained the lead in the second half and then lost it when DD came into the game and never regained it. Take it for what you will. Some players are great and make their teammates better. Some players are great and are a cancer on their team.

Maybe so but it is obvious she can't coach. Probably 80% of the teams we've faced this year have better coaches.

This program will be a shambles before she is replaced but when it becomes a shambles then the incompetent administration will react.

I have no idea what it was called for: I was only watching the game on TV, and am usually focused on the players playing, so I rarely see the technical coming. But apparently even Warlick wasn't aware that a technical was called, because she blew up over Tiffany Mitchell taking FTs after that long timeout that was called, which the technical was called just as the timeout was initially given and before the game went to commercial break.

The game announcers were told of the technical by the officials and talked about it on air during the timeout, but Holly was shocked to see Mitchell at the FT line, so I have no clue what it called on. Usually when the head coach gets "T'd" up, they not only knew about it as it happens, but they are still yelling at the official who "T's" them up as they are getting "T'd", so they usually know very well when it happens....
