Game Thread Lady Vols vs Syracuse

This team is learning how to play together. They've faced two very solid competitors. They've won. If you are expecting them to utterly dominate very good teams this early in the game, then yes, I'd say you are asking too much at this point.[/QUOTE]

The flaw in your logic is they have not played two very good teams.

Against the zone you have to push it up and try to get a shot not walk it up like we do. They get set in the zone and were forced to try to make a great pass to get it inside or take a perimeter shot no one on this team can make. I think pushing it is the key for us and maybe Holly can figure that out as the season goes along. When they set up you have two options get it inside which is difficult against the zone or make a perimeter shot which we made like 4 of 36 tonight.

if Ivy wasn't screaming at the way Tn was playing tonight and the coaches were unable to get anything going then she is as clueless as she insists we were. The product on the floor for Tn is flawed and it is coaching that has made it that way. notice, she didn't show up till after the game? if they had lost she would have been a no show I'm sure. :(

I don't scream at coaches, or anyone else for that matter. The fact that I don't make a complete fool of myself over a basketball game doesn't mean I'm clueless.

The product on the floor is not flawed. They are learning to play together, and they will be fine.

When you draw up an inbounds play you can't throw it in to Jones or Mercedes. It has to be Cooper, Reynolds, Carter, or any guard. That was two plays that no one else draws up except us.

This. From reading this forum, you'd think we were 0-3, not 3-0.

Holly had our zone buster on the bench all night. Why? I appreciate a win but these last two games were poorly coached. There is no other way to look at it. Half of the time the ball movement looks like a team at their first practice. Holly needs to get an assistant that knows offense because we are winning on talent alone right now. This team has to get a better offensive flow.

We have some really good, athletic young players, and I hope that when Holly cuts down to the 7-8 who are going to shoulder the load they will click. But I do believe I would trade one of them for a little gal who hits the threes. Gheesh, we can't hit the three.

Be careful what you wish for with Tyler. He's going to have a chance to make his mark but some of the most notable of coaches off the Summit tree are not well known for their offensive acumen. It could be more of the same.

Tyler is a major student of the game, not only his mother's philosophy. His stint at Marquette and now at La Tech are proof he wants to be his own man. He may never reach the heights at La Tech due to the conference they are in and the lack of national exposure. When he comes home (and he will when Holly's run is over, and that may be sooner than later), recruiting will never be a problem. Intensity will never be in short supply. He won't try to be his players' best friend. He will demand effort and excellence. He will stress fundamentals, and point-guard play will be featured prominently. Tyler is detail oriented, intelligent beyond his years and willing to put in the hard work to reap the rewards.

Tyler was born to be Tennessee's HC, and it will happen. And he will lead us back to national dominance. Book it.

It's not the quality of the competition that's germane. It's the way we play. We play dumb basketball. Our offense had nothing to do with players learning to play together. It was a badly coached team. We have veteran guards who are scared to shoot the ball because they've been brainwashed into thinking that they HAVE to get the ball inside regardless of whether our bigs are open inside--which they often weren't because that is the point of a zone defense. And yet we try to force it in there anyway, try to dribble against a zone--as Cooper did all night. She was 4-17 and 5 turnovers. We will get better if DeShield's legs are OK and she can play more than 20 minutes and get her game untracked--and Nared will help too, but only because they are two more good athletes on the floor. It damn sure won't be because of anything Warlick does.

One thing, that is getting over looked, our defense for the most part was solid and we can get better 8-32!

Syracuse is a dang good team, too. If they weren't, they wouldn't be ranked in the top 25.

Syracuse was # 25 in the AP poll. This early in the season, most of the ranking is based on last year's performance. They weren't ranked at all in the coaches poll. Syracuse played one game this year before tonight. It was a 3 point win over (Massey ranked #190) Rhode Island. They won't be in the top 25 for long. They're not a bad team but they shouldn't be able to stay with us on our home court. I hope you don't think that Penn State is a good team. They're ranked #77 by Massey.

Actually after seeing both Penn State and Syracuse play, they both will win more games than they lose and both should make the tournament.

Actually, I think they are both very solid teams. Top 20? No. But if they are playing well, they are good enough to give more talented teams some trouble.

Hey, stop bringing facts into this discussion. lol
Everyone knows those were two very good teams.
Truth: There is absolutely no excuse for these games being close.

The problem is the way holly wants to run offense. She preaches slowwwww and it takes away from athletes like diamond and cooper and carter making plays. We run one of the worst offensive sets ive ever seen at a high level.

I don't see offensive sets, period. Holly can't coach offense, and it appears none of her assistants can either.

I'm giving Diamond a pass because she's rusty and obviously not 100% physically, but her natural gifts are evident. She'll be fine if her health improves.

Te'a is young but incredibly talented. Her shooting and ball handling will improve. She and Diamond will be a tantalizing tandem eventually, if Holly doesn't get in the way with her major substitution fetish.

It's not all gloom and doom. We're 3-0 against decent (not great) competition. Four games in nine days is tough, but Holly MUST find her seven best and go with them. Dunbar's shooting range was needed tonight, but Holly's defensive-centric mindset gets in the way. When teams constantly clog the lane due to Mercedes' size, Holly will be forced to play Kortney more. Or maybe Meme can be the answer, who knows yet. Nared showed some nice range last year as well. Can't wait to get her back.

I still contend Jones, Carter and Middleton should only spell tired starters for a few minutes a half. All three are too inconsistent to deserve the minutes Holly gifts (yes gift, not "give") them. Moore is a wasted scholarship.

This alum and fan will never give up on the Lady Vols, but I sure don't have to sit back and ignore sub-standard coaching and strategy, ever.

That does not make them very good teams. If they make the tourney IMO they will be some of the last teams in.

me thinks someone has their nose so far up their favorite coaches behind that her reasoning has gone completely wacked.

Except, there are reasonable explanations for these games being close. Did you ever stop to consider the fact that the Lady Vols have played three games in less than a week? Sometimes there are going to be close games. That's what makes the game exciting. If your team wins, be grateful and move on.

is to make it difficult for your bigs to score. That is the point of a zone--and why you have to take and make some outside shots to loosen it up. Russell and Graves in fact got a huge number of touches tonight--too many as we are always trying to force the ball inside, something Warlick learned 30 years ago from PS and get get out of her head.

there are more than one way to skin a cat, and right now our guards are used to one way, when they penetrated the gaps, it was layups, we stopped attacking and become a jump shooting team, what a zone wants you do, if you settle rather than attack.

Our guard play will decide how this season finish, and I believe we have one or two on our roster, I'm so excited for the season...

I didn't say very good, I said good, solid! We can get so much better, wow three games into the season and fire the coach, the team sucks... and we're 3-0, with a Freshman point guard. Go Lady Vols.
