Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas A&M, Thurs Jan 2nd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SEC+ stream win 91-78

I meant to mention it earlier but then forgot, but has anyone else noticed that it looks like Jenna is already doing more coaching during games? Looks to me like Kim is easing her into the role, and that's a good thing.

She actually did all the coaching in TOs at Marshall based on what Kim said.

First of all, we played wonderful in the first half. We had some excellent assists with our players seeing the court well, moving well on offense, and getting better spacing on the court. I don't think anyone would have been upset with being on the road and being up by 22 at half. However, as our girls need to learn, you don't win the game in a half. Yes, their efforts were hobbled by horrendous officiating that even the Aggie broadcast questioned at least 3 fouls against the Vols. However, they never adjusted to this during the game. One interesting thing was that we rarely were called for fouls when we were guarding closely in our press defense but were consistently called for fouls once we were in our half-court defense. Yes, it was partly these officials, but this has been a pattern all year long. We need to better apply our ability to guard closely without fouling to our half-court defense, especially on the drive and penetrate. I thought our turnovers were a problem but really it was just a Cooper problem. Without her 7, we would have had just 13 for a road SEC game, which is not bad. Thank goodness Coop helps us in every other way. Coach was furious with at our defensive mistakes (not rotating) and effort in 2nd half.
In addition to the obviously great game by Jewel, shout outs to Latham for some meaningful minutes in the first half, Ruby for some critical shots in the 4th, and for Spencer for her 8:1 assist: turnover ratio, which will easily keep her among the nation's leaders. On the other hand, I may to start a meditation exercise when she goes to the foul line. No need for anyone to pretend any longer that this approach is better than helping her deal with her anxiety about free throws.
In any case, some great teaching moments for our great teacher of a coach. It will be interesting to see the dividends against Oklahoma this Sunday!

Good to survive and get the win for sure. Welcome to the SEC, even the lower level SEC. Much, much more difficult up here. Things that worked on the cupcake tour don't work anymore. Disheartening to see us get discombulated and stay that way the whole second half. Couldn't get it reeled back in. But hung on and won a game previous teams would have let get away.

Jewel, man, very timely big game. Not sure we would have pulled it off it not for her. Now just keep it up at least somewhat consistently. In the first half, the half court offense overall looked really, really sharp. Some great passes and ball sharing.

Coop did have herself a Jordy type night w the t.o.s, but she scores in personal runs that keeps us in games. I think she actually needs more consecutive mins against better teams, even if she's coughing it up.

Ruby continues to impress with her steadiness and workmanship. She's such an important cog in the wheel.

Ya'll can cry ref to the moon and back, and have, but we foul alot. Ahella lot. Mostly when our press is beat and we're stuck one on one, out of position, with no help and scrambling. Other times it;s just bad decision making. But obvs, we gotta cut down on that.

Converseley, poor free throw shooting is quickly becoming a big problem for us. I think Spencer is an excellent pg, 8 assists tonight, but her ft shooting is getting worse and I'm afraid she's yipping again. Would not want her at the line in a pressure situation. Not sure how changeable that is this late in her career. Too bad bc she's a gem otherwise.

Not sure Sara can keep getting significant mins. I say bring Latham along instead. Was surprised Tess got so few tonight and none late in the game, but she was getting killed on D early. No worse than Sara though. Not sure how many meaningful SEC mins they can get, esp if Jewel stays hot fm 3.

Zee needs to chill. She's too good and too valuable to take herself out with her mouth. Good to see the vets, Jewel and Spencer, telling her what for after she got the tech. Which she earned with a full quarter of beefing. Focus Zee.

No one could guard Colibaly. Can't believe ya'll are dissing her. She's a hell of a player. Overall, I've never seen TAM fight this hard. Thought they'd get dogwalked after the first half. Lots of piss n vinegar in them the second half. Seemed like they screamed alot. Just screamed. Not sure what that was about. But they def didn't roll over like previous Joni teams. I think this game helps them.

Onward and upward, only gets harder from here.

I noticed that too and as I said, I think it's bc we're in a situation where our press is beaten and we're outnumbered, out of position, with no one back to help. Then we get the scramble fouls. Maybe it's just going to happen sometimes with our press.

We're also getting blown by alot and fouling on the chase. This has been a problem for LV teams for several years.

Not that it matters but I think Caldwell is better looking than Kellie. I know it's not pc to care about that...and I don't....just an observation. Sorry for any offense. Heck Pat wasn't great looking and I'd take her back in a heartbeat.

Lol at the comments!
Great team win. I’m going to watch the replay later tonight. Glad to see this team play their brand of basketball night in and night out.
Exciting for a Top 15 team to continue to build and grow together as a group.
Tennessee had multiple players on the court that nobody on Texas A&M team could stop.
A few casual fans on this forum make post after post at length to diss their own team and praise the opponents.
GBO!

When your post apologizes for itself three times in three sentences, it's probably better left unsaid. And this was def better left unsaid.

I don't think that's entirely accurate as you have it written. Kim does plenty of coaching in timeouts.

I think most of the casual fans on this forum see things from a bias perspective.
She does coach during timeouts. Every stoppage in play she’s going over adjustments/game planning with the staff or coaching the players.
Now Coach Kim does also allow her staff to stand in the huddle to give players feedback and instruction but that doesn’t change the fact of what she’s doing on the sideline during games.
