Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas A&M, Thurs Jan 2nd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SEC+ stream win 91-78

Good to survive and get the win for sure. Welcome to the SEC, even the lower level SEC. Much, much more difficult up here. Things that worked on the cupcake tour don't work anymore. Disheartening to see us get discombulated and stay that way the whole second half. Couldn't get it reeled back in. But hung on and won a game previous teams would have let get away.

Jewel, man, very timely big game. Not sure we would have pulled it off it not for her. Now just keep it up at least somewhat consistently. In the first half, the half court offense overall looked really, really sharp. Some great passes and ball sharing.

Coop did have herself a Jordy type night w the t.o.s, but she scores in personal runs that keeps us in games. I think she actually needs more consecutive mins against better teams, even if she's coughing it up.

Ruby continues to impress with her steadiness and workmanship. She's such an important cog in the wheel.

Ya'll can cry ref to the moon and back, and have, but we foul alot. Ahella lot. Mostly when our press is beat and we're stuck one on one, out of position, with no help and scrambling. Other times it;s just bad decision making. But obvs, we gotta cut down on that.

Converseley, poor free throw shooting is quickly becoming a big problem for us. I think Spencer is an excellent pg, 8 assists tonight, but her ft shooting is getting worse and I'm afraid she's yipping again. Would not want her at the line in a pressure situation. Not sure how changeable that is this late in her career. Too bad bc she's a gem otherwise.

Not sure Sara can keep getting significant mins. I say bring Latham along instead. Was surprised Tess got so few tonight and none late in the game, but she was getting killed on D early. No worse than Sara though. Not sure how many meaningful SEC mins they can get, esp if Jewel stays hot fm 3.

Zee needs to chill. She's too good and too valuable to take herself out with her mouth. Good to see the vets, Jewel and Spencer, telling her what for after she got the tech. Which she earned with a full quarter of beefing. Focus Zee.

No one could guard Colibaly. Can't believe ya'll are dissing her. She's a hell of a player. Overall, I've never seen TAM fight this hard. Thought they'd get dogwalked after the first half. Lots of piss n vinegar in them the second half. Seemed like they screamed alot. Just screamed. Not sure what that was about. But they def didn't roll over like previous Joni teams. I think this game helps them.

Onward and upward, only gets harder from here.
Especially when the refs dictate who gets to play their game and who doesn’t.

Excellent summary.

Not that it matters but I think Caldwell is better looking than Kellie. I know it's not pc to care about that...and I don't....just an observation. Sorry for any offense. Heck Pat wasn't great looking and I'd take her back in a heartbeat.

Harper had a sharp, eye catching look. Caldwell is sort of cute I guess but ultimately pedestrian. There’s nothing wrong with noticing and discussing these things as long as you compartmentalize and coldly evaluate on merit when it comes to performance and what’s best for the organization.

I rooted hard for the camera to pan to Harper but I rooted even harder for her to be canned. She had no plan and her teams were gutless, just like her. Some of her press conferences brought back bad memories of Butch.

Now we have an identity and play hard. There will be ups and downs but I can see the vision and actually look forward to watching the games rather than just tuning in to fantasize about the coach who reminded me of a gracefully aged Brooklyn Decker.

I was at the game folks and if the refs frustrated you on tv, it was worse sitting in the arena. The amount of push offs not called on A&M when bringing the ball up the court was mind boggling. I think Tennessee got frustrated in the third and never really got over it which made the game closer than it could/should have been. Everytime A&M made a run, Tennessee hit a back breaking 3 to get control again. Yes, we have things to work on. The good news, it's only 13 games into the CKC era. They are doing well and hasn't learned everything they need to in this system yet. I look at it like this, when there is a coaching change, your entire roster all instantly become Freshman again. The upperclassmen start looking like upperclassmen again about midway through the year. This team has done great with learning a new system all while winning still! Kudos ladies!!!

She was way too worried about the officiating and not blocking out and playing defense. She needs to stay engaged in the game.

She tends to go back and forth with the officials way too much, needs to mature on that aspect. Just get your butt back and play. Instead she’s arguing a call or no call like she’s LeBron all the way down the court.
She’ll learn sec is diff from acc

51 fouls is an officiating problem not a player problem for certain.

Have no replay ability when watching streaming. Really like to validate my assumptions on calls. Lots of calls that did not seem to pass the equal application of rules test in real time. As they stacked up I personally wondered if they were more run of the mill homerism or blowout mitigation driven. Got to be hard to play when normal flow is prevented by these conditions. Heck it appeared they were trying to supply in game rest for TAM when we went on runs.

Good post. No hyperventilating. No pie in the sky. No I'm the smartest one on the board feel to it. Solid, even handed analysis.

Kim needs to get those Techs..Not her player.
I suspect the after baby Kim will be more assertive.

Ruby is the secret sauce, quietly but consistently. So far she's very deserving of wearing #2.

She is such a baller. All transfer portal season I kept pleading for us to land Ruby to my partner, and he didn't quite get my enthusiasm. He turned to me at the Winthrop game to ask how Clemson managed to land Ruby given how good she is. I also admired how she managed to stay on the court, not foul, and still contribute after she was hit with her fourth. Given our propensity for fouling, that may be important later in the season.

Can always find fault in a game. We had fans default to a loss in previous years on mid-week games to Texas AM, because of travel, logistics to campus etc. Team scored 91 and the bench almost clears 50 points alone. It’s a struggle to find fault in a road win that sees the team teetering at 100 points

Coach found fault, esp in the second half, without a struggle. Discussing areas for improvement is perfectly legit. I said this was a game previous teams would have, and did, take a loss.

Interesting the same folks who eviscerated others for celebrating a win over mediocre teams in the past are now donning the orange tinted shades. Gotta love old timey internet fan forums!

Finally getting to comments where I can see the poster actually watched the game.
You could see who had the best athletes on the court last night even on the road and that will carry over throughout the SEC.
Tennessee had the best player on the court Jewel Spear hit 6-8 threes and the best athletes Cooper, Whitehorn had their moments alongside Latham who is getting better and better.
I’m not going to pretend that players never should and won’t be affected by poor officiating. They needed to show that raw emotion and continue to compete through the adversity.
There’s a few casual fans still waiting on that ultimate collapse that is long gone. It won’t appear during SEC play. Give it a rest.
These are their moments and even these moments are a double digit win scoring 90+ points.
GBO!
