Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas A&M, Thurs Jan 2nd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SEC+ stream win 91-78

Whether the officiating was bad or not and I agree it was bad you can't give up 50 points and 56 percent from the field. I saw no one doing a very good job guarding the drive. Coach Caldwell called our second half defense terrible and I totally agree with her.

You can’t say whether it was bad or not because it didn’t impact you.
You will see things your way simply because you weren’t there and having to play through the unacceptable calls.
That officiating crew knew 100% that they were dictating the outcome of a game and proceeded to do so knowing that it would not be called into question.
However, with some players losing their composure from both teams it could have gotten ugly.
People need to realize had things escalated into a physical altercation between the teams we’ll be sitting here talking about suspensions of multiple players.
Everybody has to be held accountable including officials.
So mix me with it to be honest. I don’t care what the LVs gave up in the 2nd half of that game.
If some of you can say that 80 point win over a team has an asterisk then the points scored by Texas A&M and those awarded to them by the officials in the 2nd half will have an asterisk too.
GBO!

This game not withstanding the defense has been really bad in a few other games as well. When your not cutting off the drive with help defense then it is bad defense. You do everything you can to prevent players from getting to the basket they were getting there with ease in that second half. Like I said I saw it and I saw the officiating. I'm just glad we can score enough to still win.
We gave up 78 to a team that averages 68 and 56 percent shooting to a team that averages 43 percent so there you go.

Not that it matters but I think Caldwell is better looking than Kellie. I know it's not pc to care about that...and I don't....just an observation. Sorry for any offense. Heck Pat wasn't great looking and I'd take her back in a heartbeat.

Harper had a sharp, eye catching look. Caldwell is sort of cute I guess but ultimately pedestrian. There’s nothing wrong with noticing and discussing these things as long as you compartmentalize and coldly evaluate on merit when it comes to performance and what’s best for the organization.

I rooted hard for the camera to pan to Harper but I rooted even harder for her to be canned. She had no plan and her teams were gutless, just like her. Some of her press conferences brought back bad memories of Butch.

Now we have an identity and play hard. There will be ups and downs but I can see the vision and actually look forward to watching the games rather than just tuning in to fantasize about the coach who reminded me of a gracefully aged Brooklyn Decker.

"...with a little sex in it." ;)

Interesting that as aggressive as the officiating was, it only reduced the offense about 8 points below their average.
Good point. All those fouls don't really disrupt our game, they only allow the other team to rest more and play at a higher level than they would normally (especially in the 4th quarter).

edit:
On second thought, we could've easily covered those 8 points with a decent showing at the foul line.

This is definitely a little questionable re: sexist because do we ever discuss whether Pearl or Barnes is better looking? Laughable I know!
Having pointed that out…. The prettiest, and I mean stunning, coach was Kellie’s assistant whose name is dang escaping me! Someone help! So beautiful! a head coach now up north I think?

A&M did a fantastic job of capitalizing on the way the officials were calling the game. The number of hard drives to the basket they got for layups was impressive, and because our players were 100% certain they'd be called for a foul every time, the defense suffered. But credit to the Aggies: they were really great at making their layups. I kinda hope OUR players will soon show significant improvement in that area. It's kinda frustrating sometimes to see so many missed bunnies.

Speaking of layups, I got the sinking feeling last night that Samara may be purposefully avoiding trying to get up shots when entering the lane, choosing always to dump it off, perhaps because she doesn't want to risk getting to the line for foul shots. I hope that's not the case. I admit I have an active imagination. lol

I am proud of the team for getting the win on the road against a fired-up Aggies squad. After 13 games they're still a work in progress, but there IS progress. The program is in excellent hands with our dynamic young head coach and her amazing staff. I can't wait until Sunday! I'm going to go to the game and am confident the attendance will be super strong. The Lady Vols are going to need us to be many and LOUD.

I'm cool with men critiquing women for their looks when their opinions are 1) a little weird and 2) haven't been requested, but only if they include a selfie with their post. I'm sure only 9s and 10s are calling Kim "pedestrian."

That officiating crew made ACC and B1G refs look competent.

I particularly liked the one overruling calls on the baseline from her spot at half-court.

Is the SEC raiding rec-leagues for refs now? Actually that's not right, most rec-league refs are better than them. My apologies to rec-league refs for the comparison.

Kim, Jenna, and Joy are 1A,1B, and 1C.
Also, if Joni doesn’t return to Texas A&M I hope we can add another top paying assistant coach spot to the LV staff :)!

Here are the overall efficiency numbers of the five top players through 13 games.

Cooper 19.84
Spencer 14.69
Whitehorn 13.69
Spearman 13.53
Spear 8.46

Cooper is the best player. Spencer having a great season thus far. Whitehorn very consistent in every game. Spearman playing really well. Spear injury a lot of bad games early best player last night. Latham and Hollingshead starting to click.

Not true. Latham can. Cooper can. Ruby can. Kaniya can. Spearman can. Hollingshead can.
It’s the mentality to go for steals. Go watch the 2nd qtr. They can play defense better than any team in the SEC. They need to be more consistent.
But ultimately, the officiating last night was unacceptable. I don’t care what team you play against the best half-court teams in history would not have been able to play their style last night. Texas A&M players started in the 1st half falling down to the ground with limited to no forceful contact and from that moment forward the officials completely dictated the game.
That was an officiating flaw not a defensive flaw.
And until you deal with it personally it’s not something that as a person when you’re looking for areas to be critical will understand how it impacted the LV team.
I’ve seen this kind officiating from the sidelines as both a coach and spectator.
Facts....to be honest i would throw the whole second half away you get nothing from that mess because of officiating we have had some bad officiated games but this has got to be the worst i have ever seen....when we sat down and guarded them in the first half they could do absolutely nothing was a thing of beauty

I keep having a strong feeling Latham is about to become a major force on both ends of the court. We have definitely gotten a glimpse into what she can be recently, and so when "it" happens for her, it's gonna be epic. And if Jillian continues to show her strengths, with her, Latham and Spearman in the post I don't think we'll need to worry about that area of the floor anymore.

And Ruby Whitehorn is crushing it. I'm a huge fan of that kid!

You’re right! I’m watching the replay now. In the 1st quarter Texas A&M was certainly on their heels. I am glad Kaniya Boyd got her first career SEC start in this game, she has tremendous upside.
You can clearly see that when Latham, Spearman, Spencer, Cooper, and Whitehorn are on the floor together teams are overmatched by that level of athleticism.
Hollingshead is coming on strong as well.
Tennessee extended to a 11 point lead early. I think people forget that Samara Spencer is still recovering from a leg injury against Memphis. Before that she was arguably the best player on the team. I think she missed a few baskets in the 1st qtr that if healthy she would’ve scored on. Darby and Puckett missed some wide open 3s as well. This could’ve easily been a 15+ lead at the end of the opening qtr.

The beauty of Caldwell's system is you can allow the opponent to shoot 50%+, be on the road, have horrible officiating egregiously in the opposition's favor, and STILL win by double digits. When you get 22 more shots than the opponent, the odds are in your favor. I think we're going to win a lot of games (or at least have the chance to win) that we would have no business winning without this system. The problem will be against teams that can score with us and can play at our pace. Obviously TX, LSU and SC will be those teams, and possible Vandy and Bama.

Vandy, Alabama, and LSU can’t score with Tennessee.

We’ve seen Vandy peak against Michigan State and that’s nowhere near Tennessee ceiling.

I think LSU, Texas, and Kentucky play us on their homecourt and have the coaching experience to game plan to control the tempo. Neither of those teams have the depth to play at Tennessee pace.

LSU has the least amount of depth of any of the ranked teams in the SEC. And LSU is small. For some strange reason, they get credit for a 6’6 player that barely impacts the games I guess. Other than that it’s a 6’0 possibly 5’11 forward and a 6’3 forward. The transfer from Arkansas is not a forward or post player.

I’ll like to see how Tennessee fans travels to each of those games. There was some noticeable orange in the crowd last night on the road at Texas A&M. If we can get some support in those games going 3-0 could happen.
