Game Thread Lady Vols vs Vanderbilt

24 assists and 14 turnovers today. Westbrook and Hayes with 12 assists and 4 turnovers.

A hard stretch coming up. They have already beaten some quality opponents.

I'm happy for Holly, who is a great recruiter, been with us forever and the coach that Pat picked. It appeared the problem was"star" players who were more about self and less about team.

They gone now.

I wonder if they’ve been looking ahead... which has resulted in a 2 lack luster wins..

More than likely....or the team may be just tired mentally.

I think they thought Vandy wouldn't be much of a game. I know I thought that. I didn't realize Vandy would be so lucky with the three ball to stay in it so close.

Positives: Russell, Green, and Hayes all played great. Nared's defensive intensity picked up considerably at the end of the game. Offensive rebounding kept us in the game, TBH.

Negatives: Pretty much everything else. Overall just low energy. Westbrook and Davis looked lost on both ends. Nared missed a ton of bunnies. Kept letting the same player beat us from 3.

I’d like to add the serious cutdown in turnovers and the mental toughness to not let their offense affect their defense. Also I liked her fired up I saw the coaches getting. They had the right game plan but the players were just failing to execute. I was happy to see Holly give the opportunities for players to correct their mistakes and stay in the game but when they didn’t they were sat on the bench. This also has to give confidence to Annie that with E out the game she can effectively run the team (7 assists compared to 2 turnovers). I also think Evina steps up to the challenge of guarding Chennedy Carter because I just think she is too competitive and her sitting on the bench for her attention! To her credit she was up off the bench cheering on her teammates and not pouting! This team truly looks like it only cares about wins!

My main concern about anyone who guards Carter is whether they can do a decent job without getting into early foul trouble, because I have a feeling she's going to be aggressively trying to draw fouls to get Tennessee playing tight.

Big Upset Alert: 15 Missouri up 9 points on 4 S.Carolina.
A'Ja Wilson fouls out w/8 points. Time 2:56 to go in the 4Q. Game on ESPN2.

Dawn Staley has been ejected from the game on a T. Who do we cheer for in this game?

True, but Auburn could be giving us a blue print how to not stop her completely (because I think she is too good of a player) but maybe keep her in check some. She also maybe ready to go off against big competition like us though. I may have meme face guard her, rennia on Danni williams to bother her with some length, and let evina guard the third perimeter player.

Positives: inside play. I’m comfortable replacing Davis in starting lineup with green because of the defense she plays. Jaime should be playing wing anyways.
Negatives: first half turnovers, Westbrook struggled, and lack of defensive focus

I have a feeling SC will be fired up the rest of the SEC season. Dawn getting ejected and A’ja not performing up to par!?! They play Auburn next... I have a feeling they are going to be ready to play at home for that game.?You may get A’ja Wilson to foul out once a season well this game against Mizzu was that one. The TV analyst said it correct: A’ja is the best in the game and I want to see her on the court. I have a feeling she will be getting a foul or two not called on her so that she can remain on the court. Dawn getting ejected and A’ja fouling out I just think some whistles will be slowed. To be fair the way A’ja initiated contact when she is bumping on the block does displace the defender.

Agreed, some players say they like defense I actually think it bothers Evina to the core if someone scores on her.

Sidenote: I still can’t believe the lack of respect that TN is getting! Nell Fortner says “Looking at the teams I thought it would be Ms St and SC who would go undefeated”(first off they play each other so that’s not possible!) then she continues to say “ Now it looks like Ms St is the only one with that chance of going undefeated”🤔

IMO, yes if you look at their SEC slate out of the top teams theirs is the easiest (by record) the teams they face twice are UK, Ole Miss, and FL (no disrespect to them). They do play at Mizzu and TN but play SC and A&M in Starkville.

We play SC, A&M, and of course Vandy twice while also playing at Mizzu and LSU (who gave Ms St a run for their money at home).

SC has us twice, UK twice and Mizzu twice.

Glad they have this one game at a time mantra because we r going to need to win and move on to the next opponent or lose and get over it to move on.

I thought she was saying that she expected SC and State to be undefeated in conference play leading up to their showdown?

Anyway, I think that SC-Tennessee game will be huge. If SC wins that game, then I think it gives State some breathing room from Tennessee. If Tennessee beats SC, then I think the State-Tennessee showdown is basically for the SEC.

Yes, I also noticed how the refs were trying to help SC stay in the game. Dawn Staley, who cried & complained for help, was a bit too much for the refs to handle. We were both pulling for Missouri. I'm always glad when SC loses.

Maybe, but she followed it up with NOW THAT only leaves MSU as far as unbeatens. Which is where I think she had the Freudian slip because I think she really counts out TN which is fine with me because I think our team can use that as motivation also. Maybe it was just the way she said it.

I also agree with your predictions but I think SC will be out to prove they are still the best team with the best big so I think Wilson will take that challenge personally. No one really talks about Russell which for me I’m cool.

Do your work in silence young lady do your work!

We did not open up a can until the 4th quarter but we showed what we are capable of when we play lockdown defense. My only concern was how we played down to Vandy’s level for three quarters. We cannot play ball like that or we will get our butts beat by the lower level teams. We need to display the killer instinct from start to finish no matter what team we are playing against.

I am sure glad we have Greene. She seems to get better with every game.

The one AND ONLY thing I hope we carry over from last years team is playing up to opponents when they are ranked ahead of us 😂😂😂 everything else can stay back where it belongs (in the trash)!

Yes, Green is a beast! Jaime hit the nail on the head when she said she speaks so softly but she is just aggressive!

I am a season ticket holder for the Missouri Women’s program, though the Lady Vols are first in my heart. Missouri played a great game. They simply outplayed USC and were very physical. Dawn spent all game complaining until she received her ticket to her locker room.

Missouri basically cut off the head of the snake early (Wilson). They played Wilson tough and frustrated her until she fouled out. They refused to allow Wilson to have her way. Robin had a great game plan.

I don’t know how much coaching experience you have, however, playing down to a bad, or average, team’s level can affect you adversely when you go to the big dance or during the SEC tourney. A let down to any team can mean a quick end to the big dance. That is why the great teams bring it every game no matter who they play, they throw nothing in the trash or take nothing for granite. I think we always hold our own against teams ranked in the top 25.

Agreed! That’s why I take my teams to tougher competition.

Like last year, I see this team not separating themselves from average competition, but the difference this year is I think this team will lose less of these type of games.

Vandy isn't average competition. They're absolutely horrible. Easily the worst team in the conference.

I was hoping the Auburn game was an aberration from a young team. Two uninspired home games in a row before heading into this four game stretch is more than a little concerning....
