Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Western Kentucky

A lot more intelligent team than last season. You have to love Marta she is a coach on the floor and I thought Walker and Salary really made great decisions with the ball in their hands. A lot of weapons especially when Horston gets going she will have some big games for us.

Horston and Rennie both looked a little out of shape like they haven’t been able to practice fully. Just speculation but I thought those two in particular looked a bit rusty.

I think Horston may have physically developed herself out of the point guard position. She looks more like a two or three to me much bigger and stronger than last season. She has to learn not to be so aggressive to the basket when teams are in the zone to many players than can step in and take a charge. I would like to see her do more posting up and paint jumpers stop trying to get all the way to the basket when teams are zoning.

This was a very good starting lineup against this team. Against teams like Texas, A&M others we'll need a bigger five in the lineup almost all the time.

I knew Walker will be a starter.. She's a star player.

I agree (gasp) 😉. After watching film of her earlier this year and couple of their full games I could find I knew she would be a huge asset. She doesn’t get sped up. She manages the game really well and plays excellent on ball defense. Reminds me of Marta Sniezek but a much better offensive player.

Tamari is still the paint enforcer. She does a great job making guards think twice about brining it in there. She will have to play big time defense against Collier. She and KK can split 10 Fouls and keep her in check. Best case scenario they get her in foul trouble quickly.

True to my word, the only thing I checked after this game finished was the turnover count, the assist count, and assist-to-turnover margin. 13 turnovers (good), 22 assists (also good), +9 margin (also also good). That's it. That's all I'm watching for until month two. Good result.

Western Kentucky vs. Tennessee - Box Score - November 28, 2020 - ESPN

Looking at the stats a poor shooting game overall. The big key was plus 20 on shot attempts. There were not many game last season when we shot the ball more than our opponent. This game 75 shots to 55 if you can just get that differential and shoot a fair percentage you will win. Horston 0 for 6 today that want happen very often. The bench overall 11 for 29 from the field.

Team stats show 23 points off turnovers for us and 0 for WKU. Impressive regardless of opponent. If we did turn it over we got right back on defense and got a stop.

The Good: Strong performances by some of the newcomers, namely Salary, Walker and Suarez. Burrell had a nice stat line and played under control. Overall, good ball movement and flow on offense. Suarez and Walker both had some pretty assists. Aggressive play under the basket by Kushkituah. After a sluggish 1st quarter, the team stepped on the gas pedal for the last 30 minutes and didn't let off.

The Bad: Awful WKU team, so it's hard to take away a lot from this game. Green mostly invisible...I thought she would be more of an impact player. Poor FT shooting. Too many turnovers against a bad team, but they were playing fast on offense and it didn't cost them, so that's not the worst situation.

The Ugly: Offensive fouls from Jordan Horston plowing into set defenders (offense ran better when Walker was running point). Jessie, Saunders and McCoy didn't make the most of an early season cupcake.

Overall Grade: Solid B

Agree with most of this. We're going to need to get more out of either Green or McCoy. This starting five didn't have a true PF, and KK is going to have to spend a lot of time spelling Key at center.

Honesty hour, she seems like a great kid but I don’t see McCoy getting many minutes as the season progresses. She plays good defense but she’s a liability on offense. She mishandled 3 or 4 easy passes.

Suarez might take the starting spot at the 4 by default. I never thought McCoy was more than a depth recruit, and Suarez was by far more impressive than Green today. I didn't think Suarez would play much this year, but she seems like she's ready for the season, so...I think Tennessee found their PF.

When Western Ky was scheduled expected a better opponent. Their big center hasn't been able to get back in the country and another starter is missing as well. They did get one player back but she looked really out of shape. They do have a freshman that can shoot it but they are in for a long year.

In Green's defense she was open several times on the Block and they never got her the ball. I wouldn't base what she can provide us off of a game where it was clear they were trying to showcase RD, Rae, and Marta. A lot of those rebound RD got her and Green had their hand on it and Green let her get them as well.

I had a strong feeling Suarez was going to play a big role as I mentioned before. Was still shocked at how complete her game was. Impressed with her frame as well, she’s not a slight 6’2” and she can move. Reminds me of Caliya Robinson physically but she’s a way more talented basketball player. I see Walker, Burrell, Davis, Suarez and Key eventually becoming the main unit in SEC play. Based on what we saw today that will be a huge, strong lineup. Key really doesn’t have to score a ton with the added offense from Walker and Suarez. Her defense is invaluable. She moves so well with her length and she anticipates help side perfectly. She did a great job defending without fouling today, she was getting that big body out of the way when the smaller WKU players flung themselves at her.

Yeah, they were pretty bad. For the better part of the game, only 3 players scored and there was so much dribbling off their feet it was hard to take them seriously. They would already come up short height/talent-wise vs. Tennessee, and their player losses just made that gap that much bigger.

Marta WOW! We were told in another thread that she might a nice surprise but wow did not see this coming! I was most impressed with her absolute poise and decision-making. Just outstanding especially for her first game. She also has great body control but one drawback, I do worry about her foot speed. Hope it will be adequate for the SEC, but Lordy Mercy what a wonderful surprise!! If today was not a cruel trick, this young lady will be an absolute Difference Maker right away.

As will Jordan Walker. 2 miracles in one day? Did a for real point guard fall into our hands out of heaven? And not a moment too soon. I was also impressed with Salary though she's a bit more of a diamond in the rough then the very polished Walker. It's one game against a weak opponent but I'm delighted. Good movement, great assist to turnover ratio, still need to work on better shooting especially long range.

I'm also very pleased with the play of Burrell. Much more under control, it really looks like she's going to turn a corner this year. That will be a huge factor espcially in relieving pressure on Davis who I thought had a very solid game.

Like everyone else, I was surprised at the starting lineup but it did not take long to realize Kellie knew exactly what she was doing. Key might eventually replace Green, but I'd say the other four are set.

Today's big disappointment was the shaky start to the season for Jordan horston. I know she can be better and I still hope that she will. For now tho, her demons remain the same. Which is what makes the pleasant surprise of Jordan Walker all the more important.

It's a good and very interesting start. This team looks a little deeper and a lot more versatile than previous teams. Could be very fun to watch. Onward and upward.
