Game Thread: Samford v Lady Vols, Tues Nov 5th; Home-FCC; 6:30PM; SEC+ network:,,, Win 101-53

My first time watching, didn't really see the CN game.

Gotta start w defense, wow, relentless and dogged. The defensive effort is mind blowing. Somewhere Pat is smiling. Doesn't always mean it will be successful against better talent, but they'll by God die trying.

Spearman is impressive, huge upside. The mystery of Jill continues. I also thought Latham would be more of a factor.

Nice to see Jewel scoring. One of either her or Sara has to be hitting 3s for us to succeed. Sara couldn't throw it in the ocean tonight but her presence on court still feels important.

Coop and Ruby are obviously the athletic jewels. Right now one or both is overpowering far inferior talent on offense. Will that continue in stonger comp?

Sure hope Spencer's ok, I really like her presence. Destinee Wells please call home. Subbing like a wild women and DW only gets 1 min?

No one asked me, but I still don't like this "style". I don't find it overly exciting, just overly chaotic. I get that ugly is what we're trying to do on D, but there's SO much rolling on the floor, fouls, turnovers (57 of em!). I like smooth and pretty bball. Hopefully the offense smooths out a bit.

I also hate the subbing, but I've always hated the subbing in the non conf cupcake sched. Looks like it might shake down to Spencer, Cooper, Ruby, Spearman, Jewel, and Sara as a core, w Boyd getting significant mins too.

Sadly, the crowd was dismal. Interested to see the "official" tally.
It was a good crowd.

Nah, it's just my opinion and I'm obviously old fashioned. I just enjoy very good half court offense, passing, cutting, high % shooting and low t.o.s. I understand that isn't the current fad. I also really dislike floor rolling, etc. I understand disruptive isn't gonna look pretty, but I still prefer watching smooth n pretty. Can't I have a style opinion?
I agree with you re enjoying good halfcourt offense. At times tonight I wanted to see some sets: a post entry pass, dump down, high-low, back-door, something. Especially when 3s weren’t falling and the press wasn’t effective.

We have athletes to run the system CKC wants, which is great. I also think we could be dangerous in the HC.

Seems like when you create SO much havoc on D, it's hard for that frantic energy not to translate to O. Esp when you also encourage quick shots. I'm sure they're working on a less rushed O for certain situations

Excited for the MTSU game next week. That will be our best early season litmus test.

We all know how that ended last season…

They are well coached and have a decent roster. I suspect we see a very different result this time around.

Also, still can’t believe we agreed to play them on a neutral floor last year. Just dumb. That was probably the worst loss of the season for morale and clout. Our season was a cooked goose at that point.

Was thinking during the game that Coach Insel is somewhere figuring out a good press break offense. Not sure their talent level this year, and I'm sure it won't be up to ours. But they'll definitely provide a better challenge.

They don’t go deep but the 5 they play can play. They lost Wheeler and Whitson to graduation who were big key players for them for their careers. They were replaced by serviceable players though.

I don’t think they can go a full 40 with us. They’re really only 5-6 deep. Teams like that are going to struggle with the intensity of this Lady Vol team.

I haven’t seen a Lady Vol look gassed yet, whatever conditioning they are doing is the real deal. Plus the sub pattern keeps those legs spicy.

Enjoy the three yards and a cloud of dust. 😉

I think we will gradually begin to play "smoother" if for no other reason than efficiency of effort as the ladies internalize what they're having to think right now, as they develop familiarity with where each player is going to go first, and as it slows down and they begin thinking one and two moves ahead of what's happening in the moment.

Wish I had a photograph of last game's and this game's whiteboards, to compare!

Hawaii Pacific has never been a D1 school so I'm guessing that game doesn't count for the record books.
Thanks. 38 team steals against HPU is listed as the record in the LV Basketball Media Guide.

Hawaii-Pacific is a D-II school like Carson-Newman. So maybe there are two different ways to calculate the record. Where do you see the 20 steals number as the former record, and does it say when and against whom? A new source I should check out.

I see an article by WATE saying that tonight's 25 [sic] steals broke the program record. Tonight's stats say 27 steals, as was pointed out. But they don't say what the previous record was. It's not in the KNS write-up.

The better the coaching for our opponents, definitely the better for Tennessee, 'cause we need every single game to show us something we need to work on. If every opponent challenges us and makes us look bad for a bit in some way at some point in the game, that helps us going forward.

Playing MTSU is bound to help us.

Definitely a very well constructed early season schedule, culmanating in a big test w Fla St.

Right, it all went downhill after that. This was going to be a sloppy game. Kim has said as much. This “style” was waaaay more exciting then what we’ve been seeing for the last , well, let’s be honest , 10 years. I see The vision. It might have been Samford and we don’t know how it’s going to match up with a FSU, Or Iowa for example, but I like It. We will wear you down. Plain and Simple. I know GLV thinks we are Arkansas 2.0, yet it’s literally nothing like what Neighbors runs
Well

well I can tell you now, you either going to complain every game, not watch the ladies altogether, or deal with it because this is Kim’s style and she’s standing 10 toes on it! She also mentioned that the subbing will decrease once she feels her team is ready to play longer stretches and conditioning can take it… until then, sit back and enjoy the ride!

I have confidence in Coach to put Jill in a position to succeed.
Jill has to stop playing so soft! She’s still not being physical.. Zee will easily eat Jill’s minutes because she’s playing more physical and more consistent! Jill needs to step it up! However, Jill definitely was better under Harper because of the slower system

Spicy legs… 🦵

Any sports reporter who starts a question to a coach with "How important is it for you..." or "How big was it for you..." should be kicked in the butt! With days to prepare for a postgame interview... that's all you could come up with???

How does a coach respond intelligently to that kind of question? CKC doesn't appear too patient with those questions. You can almost see her eyes start to roll each time.

My fantasy would be for CKC or CJH to respond, "Do you want that on a scale of 1 to 10, or on a scale of 1 to 50?"

Or, "In comparison with the Magna Carta, or with the first moon landing?"

I understand that reporters already have most of their article written, and are using the postgame interview to get a few quotes in places they've already determined. That's just efficient writing against a deadline.

But what kind of article simply needs that final, crowning quote from the coach...
"Oh, pretty big. Yeah. Definitely big."
"It's, uh, it's important all right. Yup."

Interesting because i love the style. It’s way better than that boring slow offense KH and crew ran. The energy in TBA just seems way different as well also from fans, to staff to players.
