Gary Parrish Latest On Pearl (sourced)

It isn't about what Tennessee was before Pearl (which it did have some good periods, fyi), it's about it's ceiling after Pearl. UT has the facilities, fan base, one of the "big" conferences with high profile rivalries (Kentucky, Florida) and recent success. UT can afford to pay enough to find and pull a good coach.

Afterall, who the hell was Pearl before he came here?

We were a sleeping giant before him. We still have all the tools and toys for success even if he leaves.

sleeping giant my a$$ we werent that good before pearl.. he brought in good recruits and has repeatably taken us to the ncaa tournament.. you really dont seem to know our situation.. Pearl will remain our coach and he will continue to produce tournament births

Caulkins said the University would have to do a cost/benefit analysis on whether to keep Pearl and said we would probably be better off financially to fire him.

I disagree.

Emain, national relevance?

The Sweet 16 team had a total of zero guys who have made serious money playing in the NBA.
We choked hard against UNC. The team was a bunch of guys who cared so much about success that they smoked weed regularly and spent more time playing Goldeneye and eating pizza at midnight than they did taking care of their bodies and trying to win a national championship. Jerry Green was openly mocked by his players towards the end, he had lost control completely.

I was there...we beat some teams and I had fun in that era, but we were not considered nationally relevant by many. We stormed the court when we beat a ranked Arkansas team because it was such a surprise...

Yes, and look at the plethora of NBA talent Pearl has produced...oh wait.

DeVoe made the NCAA Tournament his first five years at UT. Green made the field each of his four years. Who doesn't seem to know the situation?

I felt I could not afford to go there. They offered me $0.00

I had a full ride and felt I could not make up for it. Might have been a dumb decision. I certainly have enjoyed business more than I thought I would at the time as a math phobic English lit grad.

Offered me bucks, but I went elsewhere. Looking back, wish I had gone to Charlottesville. Could easily have ended up where I did out of there.

As a math phobic anything, you have no business trying to take QA, finance, operations or political economy. Best that you avoided the MBA.

I disagree.
What was the support for that rationale?

Ignorance.

Usually I enjoy listening to Parish/Caulkins but I found that comment just ridiculous.

I can't think of anything that works unless it's a huge dropoff in recruiting and ensuing malaise. That's stupid.

I believe one of their comments were, if he somehow gets suspended by the NCAA for a year or so (like Dez Bryant) for lying to them, then you might as well go ahead and get rid of him.

That was Parrish AFTER Caulkins made the comment about the cost/benefit analysis

Geoff Calkins:

1) Basketball doesn't matter all that much, relatively speaking.

2) Depending on what the NCAA comes down on UT with, will Pearl be able to effectively recruit and run the program in a credible way as he has up to this point.

(I just went and relistened, lol)

The last time Tennessee won an SEC Tournament was in 1979. The Vols may have won the SEC East in the regular season, but it is the tournament that counts.

No it's not. Not even close....the SEC Tournament Champion is NOT the SEC Champion.

It's amazing how idiotic our fans can be. We have someone in here telling everyone to "calm down" then proclaims the end of UT basketball if Pearl leaves. The ones proclaiming this nonsense in no way had any clue who Pearl was nor what he would do here, so why are you so simple-minded that you think another coach can't do it? It's almost like you WANT UT basketball to go in the toliet if Pearl is removed.

I am sorry but this will not hurt us. The only way it will hurt us is with the media. Pearl is NOT going anywhere. Even if we do loose 1 scholly for the next three years oh well just take sweet tea Mcbee off and give it to a new recruit. We are hot on the recruiting trail and already haveost of this class signed next year this will be forgotten and will hand pick the player we want with another good showing in the tourny

Things change, recruit's opinions on a school can change. Especially if they find out there's no postseason.
